6 | February 6, 2020 | the new lenox patriot news newlenoxpatriotdaily.com Two New Lenox men indicted in alleged Chicago White Sox ticket-selling scheme Sean Hastings, Editor From Feb. 3 Two former employees of the Chicago White Sox were indicted for their alleged involvement in fraudulently selling thousands of tickets to White Sox games, according to a press release issued Jan. 31 by the United State’s Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois on Jan. 31. While working as ticket sellers, James Costello, 66, and William O’Neil, 51, both of New Lenox, generated complementary and discount game tickets without the team’s authorization and gave them to ticket broker Bruce Lee, 34, of Chicago, in exchange for cash payments, according to the release. The indictment notes Lee, who owned the Chicago-based ticket brokerage Great Tickets, sold approximately 34,876 tickets obtained from Costello and O’Neil on StubHub below face value during the 2016-2019 baseball seasons for approximately $868,369. The White Sox, meanwhile, reportedly suffered a loss of roughly $1 million. Costello is charged with one count of wire fraud; O’Neil is charged with one count of making a false statement to the FBI; and Lee is charged with 11 counts of wire fraud and two counts of money laundering. Each count of wire fraud is punishable up to 20 years in federal prison, while each money laundering count carries a maximum 10-year sentence, and the false statement charge is punishable by up to five years in prison. Arraignments have not been scheduled, according to the release. The board also approved the bid award for the project to Len Cox & Sons Excavating at the cost of $3.82 million. The vote carried with all in favor, minus the votes of Keith Madsen and Annette Bowden, who were absent. The project will begin once the loan process is approved by the State. One concern expressed by Trustee David Smith was “how bad is it going to mess up Route 30” in relation to traffic. Civil engineer Will Nash said it will be bad for a little while, mainly down by Oak Drive and Pine Street. “Other than that, we should be out of the street for most of it,” he added. Nash also assured the board that there will be minimal water service interruption to the area. “When we have to take them off of the old water main that is out there and tie them on to the new one, we’ll coordinate with all those businesses out there,” Nash said. “There will be a duration of time, a couple hours, half a day at the most, where they might be out of water. We’ll work with those businesses to do that at the most opportune time.” The board also approved all in favor of adopting a complete streets policy. Assistant Village Administrator/ Community 3 Development Director Robin Ellis said it is something the Village has already been doing, but did not have a formal policy. The decision comes as the Will County Governmental League is using a new scoring system for awarding service transportation funding and having a complete streets policy allows the Village to get more points. Complete streets policy is the concept that streets is more than just for vehicles. It’s pedestrians, bicyclists, transits, and all ages and abilities,” Ellis said. “This would establish that and say that we will give consideration to all modes and abilities on future projects.” This article was trimmed to fit for print.
