Wednesday February 5 2020 News • By Sophie Cornish PEOPLE ARE being warned not to go to areas like Godley Head in hot and dry weather, as they may not be able to escape if a major fire breaks out. The warning was issued by fire chiefs and police prior to the past week’s high temperatures, which reached into the early to mid-30s. But Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade chief officer Daryl Sayer said he would “absolutely” advise people to continue to Wayne Hamilton be cautious. “There’s still concern there and we’ve still got a bit of summer to go so the weather is only going to dry up the hills more.” Fire and Emergency New Zealand encouraged people to avoid isolated areas that have only one or two entry and exit points, one example being Godley Head. Said FENZ specialist fire investigator Wayne Hamilton: “Stay away from those areas. We would suggest rather than walking up the hills, go along the beach. People need to be conscious that they are entering high fire danger areas,” he said. All walks in areas with vegetation should be limited to the cool of the morning, Mr Hamilton said. It is very important they park on gravelled areas, don’t drive off the road on to areas of vegetation,” Mr Hamilton said. A total fire ban continues in the entire Canterbury region, meaning lighting any fires is strictly prohibited. Mr Hamilton said small amounts of drizzle do not make a difference to fire risk conditions. “Unless we get significant rain, people should not be complacent, it doesn’t make a difference.” Earlier this month, it was revealed a multi-agency approach, Operation Lucifer, conducted by FENZ, police and neighbourhood watch groups was under way to prevent fires. Senior Sergeant Roy Appley said the operation is continuing and is monitoring suspicious behaviour. He is encouraging members of the public to take photos, particularly of vehicles and people, who may be acting suspiciously. • Phone 111 immediately if you see or smell smoke, or see any suspicious behaviour. BAY HARBOUR In Brief PAGE 3 ADVICE ON SEATING City council staff have been asked for advice on the repair and replacement of seating on the Esplanade. The Linwood- Central-Heathcote Community Board requested information due to concerns by member Darrell Latham that a lot of the seating was “past its used by date.” SURF PATROLS KEPT BUSY It was a busy weekend for surf lifesaving clubs in the Bay Harbour area on Sunday as temperatures soared to 35 deg C. Sumner Surf Life Saving Club patrol finished up at 7pm after 12 rescues, five assists, two water searches and 250 preventative actions. Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving Club patrol completed one rescue, 12 assists, one major first aid and two minor first aids and 50 preventative actions. AKAROA DIESEL SPILL An investigation is under way to find out how diesel got into the water near Akaroa wharf. Environment Canterbury said it is aware of diesel rising up from the shoreline on the south side of the wharf in Akaroa Harbour.
