Why? “Maybe Idon’t have the capacityfor a lot.”In this case, he’sreferring to the coupleblock radius of the citythat helped inspire hisnew album, The NeonSkyline, a romantichomage to a beloveddiner in a rapidlygentrifying Parkdale. It makes sense that Shauf likesto keep his focus on the micro: Small moments arethe singer-songwriter’s specialty as his lyrics oftenfind magnificence in the mundane, focusing on tinymemorable moments versus broader themes.“The Skyline reopened right when I moved to Torontoand I ended up going there a lot,” Shauf says of theinspiration. It’s close to his home in Parkdale and he quicklybecame a regular, making friends with the owners and staffand falling for the diner’s little community.The Neon Skyline indeed reflects the inner narrativeswe project and how the characters we portray interminglewithin our community. For Shauf, these exchanges act aslyrical inspiration. Relationships with acquaintances—and theoutcome of those relationships—has always been somethingthat Shauf’s found intriguing: "I think it’s interesting in that sortof scenario when you are getting to know someone just bythe small little pieces of themselves that they’ll give up everyonce in a while. There’s no real reason why you know them,but you can get a little glimpse into their life.Compared to Shauf’s Polaris Prize short-listedrecord The Party, the mood of The Neon Skyline isslightly more subdued and vulnerable, with the record’snarrator remarking, “Sometimes I feel like I should neverspeak again.”With the release of this very personal piece of work,Shauf hopes that his small world stays small—despiteletting everyone in on a section of it. “I’m a little scared,” headmits. “That’s my quiet bar.
