President’s
Message
Phil Davis
JLL
A new decade is the perfect opportunity to look back at
our growth and consider what we want the next ten years
to look like. At Houston BOMA’s Board Retreat last October,
myself, our board members, and staff did just that. We
thought about what’s working, identified opportunities
where we can serve you better, and wrapped it all up in an
ambitious strategic plan.
We’re bringing back our most popular events, with
new improvements designed to enhance your experience.
We’ve already seen how small changes can make a big
impact. Our first event of the year, Business Exchange, got
a few small tweaks, and turned out to be one of our best
yet. Plus, we’ll also be expanding our newest program,
our Tour with BOMA series, after a great first event at The
Jones on Main. Look for two more building tours coming
later this year.
We’re bringing back our most popular
events, with new improvements
designed to enhance your
experience.
Education and workforce development have been
increasingly important to our members, especially our
engineers. We developed a full education calendar this
year, with educational opportunities for every segment
of our membership. In addition to four seminars, three
RPA courses, our Foundations of Real Estate Management
course, and our Building Engineering 101 course, we’ll be
adding an SMA course for building engineers. Registration
is now open for all courses to help you get a head start.
Our Advocacy efforts remain more important than
ever. 2020 is an off year for the Texas legislature, but we’re
not resting! Locally, we have several new City Council
members, and our mayor was re-elected to a final term.
Houston BOMA is making sure to foster our connections
with these new council members by engaging with them
through our Houston BOMA Week at Houston City Council
on February 18 – 20. Plus, the city’s Climate Action Plan is
garnering attention as climate change becomes a focus for
many major cities. BOMA is proud to be involved with the
Climate Action Plan so we can be at the forefront of sustainability
while protecting the rights of building owners
and property managers.
At the national level, we’re heading into a contentious
election year that will shape our political landscape for the
next few years. The question on everyone’s minds: Is Texas
is a swing state? We’ll be monitoring the races to find out.
Until then, we’ll be meeting with our national legislators
from Texas in Washington, DC at the BOMA International
National Issues Conference.
Those are just a few things we’ll be working on – there’s
much more that we don’t have room to list here. All of this
tremendous growth would not be possible without our
committees, volunteers, and sponsors. Thank you to everyone
who has stepped up to get these plans in motion. And
of course, thank you to all of our members for not only
embracing change, but encouraging innovation at BOMA.
As we shift from looking back to looking forward, think
about what you want BOMA to look like in ten years – and
let us know how we can achieve that. Reach out to me
any time to share feedback or discuss BOMA’s future. I’m
confident we have a great decade to come.
Industry Leaders Share Their Secrets
to Success at Our Executive Confessions Seminar
Our last seminar of 2019 ended up being one of our most popular seminars
of the year! Panelists Roger Ritter (M-M Properties), Lori Bryant (CBRE), Steve Ash
(Transwestern), Matt Kent (Parkway) and Meredith Cress (Hines) spoke about their
experiences in management, career challenges, and the valuable life lessons that
helped shape them as industry leaders. When asked what advice they have for
new property managers, the panelists agreed that everyone makes mistakes –
it’s how you recover and learn from the experience that truly matters.
If you missed this insightful panel, purchase a live recording of the seminar
Are you Bowling Alone?
By Tammy K. Betancourt, CAE
Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice President
Are you or your employees short on social capital these days? It could be impacting your happiness and quality
of life. According to Robert D. Putnam, author of Bowling Alone, society is trending towards startling declines in
social interaction which is harming our overall health.
As a matter of fact, attending club and association meetings has fallen off 58% over the past 25 years. Family
dinners have declined 43%; and having friends over has dropped 35%. What are the culprits of this declining
socialization? While there are many contributors, Putnam cites changes in work, family structure, television, computers,
changing women’s roles and other factors as contributors to the decline.
I had the pleasure of hearing a talk by Timothy Carney recently. Carney is author of Alienated
America in which he set out to examine the death of the American dream. He came to
many of the same conclusions as Robert Putnam. His research determined that success, or
rather lack of it, is a social phenomenon, not an economic one. Carney finds that in some
parts of the United States, life seems to be getting worse because citizens are more isolated
and facing their problems alone. These communities have seen declines in marriage,
voting, church attendance, and volunteer work. Even when money comes back to town,
happiness does not return if people there do not reengage.
According to Putnam, joining and participating in just one group cuts your odds of
dying in next year in half. Half! While that is a startling prediction, and I’m not sure
how true that is, it would at a minimum appear that there is more and more evidence
that lack of social interaction is bad for you, and more human interaction is
good for you. I am happy to say that BOMA is here to help.
Let our powerful network and many opportunities for human interaction on
committees and at events go to work for you to improve your social capital and
make your life happier this year. I hope to socialize with you in 2020. n
Did you know?
Every ten minutes of commuting
reduces all forms of social
capital by 10%.
Watching commercial
entertainment is the
only leisure activity where
doing more of it is associated with
lower social capital.
