KATRINA HORNE has been
left overjoyed after the long
search to find her missing
dog Tinka has had a happy
ending.
The little white maltese chihuahua
was found after being
missing for five weeks.
Described as a “mummy’s
girl,” in her 11 years, Tinka had
never ventured out past the
driveway of her Hornby home,
Mrs Horne said.
“It was completely out of
character . . . she is quite a princess,”
she said.
But after five stressful
weeks of searching every night,
putting out mailbox flyers and
making posts on Facebook since
Christmas Eve, Tinka (short for
Tinker Bell) was found.
Dangerous
intersection
decision
delayed
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
PLANS TO transform the city’s
fourth most dangerous junction
into a T-intersection to reduce
crashes has been put on hold.
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board has postponed
making a decision on making a
$1 million safety upgrade to the
Ilam/Riccarton/Middleton Rd
intersection.
It is after city
council staff presented
a detailed
report to the board
last week requesting
it endorsed its
preferred design of Mark Peters
restricting the use
of Middleton Rd.
This would be by changing access/egress
to left in, left out, and
changing Ilam Rd and Middleton
Rd to a T-intersection.
As of June last year, 40 crashes
with varying degree of injury had
been reported at the intersection
since 2011 making it the fourth
most dangerous in the city.
The decision to defer making
any calls on making safety
improvements follows concerns the
three newly elected board members
did not have a strong enough
understanding of the issue.
Fire fuels residents’ call to
maintain overgrown grass
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A SUSPICIOUS scrub fire at
Kyle Park has added weight to
an outcry from Hornby residents
for a stronger maintenance
programme to fight overgrown
grass along the railway line.
Fire crews were called to the
park after a scrub fire measuring
10 x 40m broke out by the railway
line at 3.34pm last Saturday.
A Fire and Emergency New
Zealand spokeswoman said
while no damage was sustained
to the railway line, the fire did
involve grass along the side of
the rail track.
The week before, maintenance
of the railway line between
Hornby and Templeton –
particularly at Kyle Park was
criticised at the Greater Hornby
Residents’ Association meeting.
The potential fire risk due to
sparks from trains was raised.
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board member
Mark Peters said due to the fire
risk, already nervous residents
were extremely lucky the fire was
quickly brought under control.
KiwiRail acting South Island
operations general manager
INVESTIGATION: A fire at Kyle Park by the railway line is being
treated as suspicious.
Mark Heissenbuttel said its contractors
spray and mulch mow
the Hornby and Templeton area
3m from the track centre on a
cyclical basis.
“We also mulch mow a 2m
strip next to the track once
between the months of October
and late December in Templeton
and Hornby as a step to mitigate
fire risk during dry summer
months,” he said.
The company contracts
arborists Treescape to carry out
maintenance.
But Mr Peters questioned if
KiwiRail was maintaining far
enough off the track and said the
entire boundary should be maintained
rather than a set distance.
“They should be looking at the
entire rail corridor to make sure
it is maintained as a responsible
landowner,” he said.
But Mr Heissenbuttel said KiwiRail
is responsible for 3700km
of rail corridor throughout the
country and vegetation management
needs to be prioritised and
carefully scheduled.
Last month, Fire and Emergency
New Zealand introduced a
prohibited fire season for the city,
Banks Peninsula, Selwyn, Hurunui
and Waimakariri districts.
It is not the first time maintenance
of overgrown grass by the
railway line has been criticised.
Last year Mr Peters slammed
the lack of maintenance adjacent
to Carmen Rd, which forms part
of SH1.
About a year ago, a Dunedinbound
train was stopped north
of Rolleston after fires broke out
beside SH1.
Mr Peters said it will no longer
be an accident if a major fire
breaks out and the overgrown
grass has been continually ignored
by the authorities.
City council’s community
parks manager Al Hardy said
staff visited the site following the
fire and have deemed it safe.
In Brief
MAJOR CYCLE ROUTE
Construction of a major cycleway
running from Templeton to
Hagley Park is set to begin soon.
City council’s transport planning
and delivery manager Lynette
Ellis said construction will begin
at Hagley Park and then progress
towards Templeton with the full
route expected to take two years
to construct.
PARK UPGRADE SOON
A major overhaul of Harrington
Park’s playground will begin this
month. A large play structure
featuring a mega tunnel slide,
nets, monkey bars, a fireman’s
pole, a climbing wall, stepping
posts and monkey bars will be
installed. A wobbly wood bee
rocker, flying fox, a birds nest
carousel, a mega swing set, a new
bike/scooter stand, new picnic
tables and 13 new trees also
features in the plan.
RICCARTON RD
A section of Riccarton Rd
will receive 60min parking
restrictions. It comes after
business Minx Hair Studio
reported to the city council
customers were having
difficulties finding short-stay
parking. The proposal is to
introduce the equivalent of two
short-stay parking spaces, within
a short walking distance of the
business.
Burnside HS 60th
celebrations a success
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
CATCHING UP with old
classmates has been a highlight
for former Burnside High School
student Clive Chandler.
Mr Chandler was a key helper
for a two-day reunion marking
60 years since the school opened
recently.
First-day students who were
at the school when it opened on
February 2, 1960 celebrated the
school’s milestone last Sunday
and Monday.
About 40 former students attended
the two-day event.
Mr Chandler started as a
student at the school when it officially
opened in 1960.
The school opened in a staggered
approach with initially only
about 200 third-formers.
“It has been excellent. It has
been really nice catching up with
people I have not seen for 10-30
years,” Mr Chandler said.
He said while some people’s appearance
had changed a lot, some
people still look the same.
The celebrations have included
poetry, a speech from former
principal John Godfrey on the
school’s past successes, lunch and
dinner and tours of the school.
on Saturday.
Sparks, which features the
Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
and a dazzling fireworks
on the SummerTimes calendar
and traditionally attracts a crowd
of more than 50,000.
To make travel to the event
easy, a free park and ride service
will operate from Canterbury
University’s Clyde Rd car park
and from the Cranley St bus stop
by Eastgate Shopping Centre.
Between 5pm and 8.30pm
people will be able to park at the
university and the mall main car
park and then catch a free bus to
North Hagley Park.
At the conclusion of Sparks,
buses will return people to the
university and Eastgate. The
departing buses will leave from
Park Tce (across from Peterborough
St) between 10 and
10.15pm.
“The Night Noodle Market is
on the same night as Sparks so
we are expecting a huge crowd in
Intersection safety
plan decision delayed
• From page 1
Board member Mark Peters
called for the report on the
intersection to “lay on the table”
until the board had received
another briefing by city council
staff.
Mr Peters, along with Gamal
Fouda and Andrei Moore were
elected to the board following the
October elections.
Before then, the proposal to
improve the safety of the intersection
first came to the board in
November 2018 and city council
staff briefed the board on the issue
in June last year.
“The reason I have asked for
this to lay on the table is simply
there is a heck of a lot of information
here for us to digest.
“This is a huge decision for the
suburb of Riccarton and wider
areas so we need to make sure we
get it right and get it right the first
time,” Mr Peters said.
City councillors Jimmy Chen,
Catherine Chu, board members
Debbie Mora, Helen Broughton,
Mr Fouda, Mr Moore along with
Mr Peters voted in support to put
the report on hold.
City councillor Anne Galloway
and chairman Mike Mora voted
against.
LONG TIME COMING: The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board has postponed making a decision on
making a $1 million safety upgrade to the Ilam/Riccarton/
Middleton Rd intersection. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
Cr Galloway said she did not
support the amendment and felt
very disappointed the project
may not be progressed as a huge
amount of work has been put into
the report.
“This is about safety, it has been
the key focus of this project – the
safety of those using this intersection
and I am concerned and
worried that by delaying it we are
putting other people’s safety at
risk,” she said.
Cr Galloway said it had new
city councillors who have been
expected to come up to speed
with issues they have not been
part of and it is just “part of the
parcel”.
“So let’s move forward,” she said.
Mr Mora said he understood
the situation was “very difficult”
but the issue has been around a
long time.
Community governance
manager Matthew Pratt said the
earliest he could get city council
staff in to brief the board on issue
would be about February 25 –
depending on availability – with
the report to come back for a
decision on March 3.
Dog found after
5km adventure
• From page 1
It was after Mrs Horne had
received a phone call from a lady
who had seen a small white dog
on a property in Templeton.
“In my mind, I didn’t think
it was her because she had been
away so long,” she said.
Mrs Horne went out to the
same area three times to find
Tinka.
On the second night when she
was walking back to the car she
saw a flash of white and called
out before Tinka came running
to her.
The find had left Mrs Horne a
“blubbering mess on the side of
the road.”
“I was beside myself, I couldn’t
believe it was her. I think I was in
a state of shock.”
Her family was just as excited,
she said she was worried her
four-year-old and two-year-old
children would “smother” Tinka,
as they were so excited to see her.
Mrs Horne described her other
papillon chihuahua Louie, 8, as
“over the moon” to see his pal
back home.
While Tinka was away, Louie
would cry when her children
would talk about her and ask
where she was.
“It would break my heart.”
Mrs Horne said the “odds were
against” Tinka as she had suffered
a bad heart murmur since
she was born.
How did Tinka end up in Templeton?
Schools prep for festival
TRANSFORMATION: Demolition for the last of the Branston
Intermediate School buildings is under way.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
Demolition begins
on remaining classroms
THE LAST of the former
Branston Intermediate School
buildings are being demolished.
The school, located on Amyes
Rd, was closed in 2013 following
the February 22, 2011, earthquake.
Work began last month and
is expected to be finished in
March.
The buildings to be
demolished are the school’s
former technology and art
block.
The site has been occupied by
the new South Hornby School
since the school became operational
in late 2017.
The Ministry deferred demolition
of the old buildings until
now as these were being used
by the neighbouring Hornby
High School as teaching spaces,
while the high school’s own
redevelopment project was being
completed.
The area where the buildings
are being demolished will be
completed with the creation of a
bike track for the school.
SCHOOL PUPILS from
Burnside Primary School are
amongst those who have been
preparing for the Grow Ō
Tautahi Christchurch Garden
Festival.
Burnside, St Marks, Heathcote
Valley, Banks Avenue, St Albans
Catholic, West Rolleston, West
Eyreton, West Melton and Diamond
Harbour Schools are taking
part in the festival, creating
display gardens that reflect their
values and surroundings.
It will be held in the Botanic
Gardens from March 20-22.
The gardens have been growing
since late last year, but extra work
was needed over the holidays.
Grow Ō Tautahi festival director
Sandi MacRae said school kids will
be on-site during the festival to
talk to visitors about their gardens
and what they represent.
“When we were planning the
Festival, we were clear it had
to reflect local people and local
ideas. It has been fantastic to get
so many local primary schools
involved to show off their gardening
skills in creations that
reflect their values.
“We’re working closely with
the schools to support their displays,
but these are all their own
creations and it’s their hard work
that has gone in to producing
the exhibits. I know Cantabrians
will love these gardens and they
GREEN THUMB: Burnside Primary School pupils busy
preparing to take part in the Grow Ō Tautahi Christchurch
Garden Festival.
are sure to be real feature of the
Festival,” she said.
The school garden creations
will include an edible salad bowl,
a celebration of native plants, a
focus on wellness, a reflection
on life in the red zone and many
more ideas.
Grow Ō Tautahi is a free,
homegrown festival designed
specifically for Christchurch. It
is a creative and environmentally
aware event that draws on the
best ideas from the community,
schools, garden designers,
scientists, food gatherers and
chefs.
St Albans Catholic School ‘s
Nicky Ryan-Yates held two holiday
workings bees.
“We were so lucky to have the
support of Oderings Garden
Centre, who lent us the space to
store the plants over the holidays
and held tours for our garden
club. Working bees were a fantastic
opportunity for the pupils to
learn more about gardening, like
how different potting mixes are
made, how cuttings are taken
and how seedlings are potted.
“They were amazed to see
the growth of their plants
over summer and everyone is
incredibly excited about being
part of Grow Ō Tautahi,” she said.
Stranger
danger social
media mix up
• By Sophie Cornish
A FLURRY of concern on
social media led to a man being
accused of taking potentially
inappropriate photos of school
children outside two Hornby
schools last week.
It was later discovered the man,
who had been taking photos of
students outside Hornby High and
Hornby Primary schools, both on
Waterloo Rd, was gathering information
for a bid to make the road
safer to cross.
The Waterloo Rd resident is preparing
to bring a case before the
city council in an effort to make
the road safer for students.
Both schools shared a Facebook
post which said: “Suspicious character
alert! We have been advised
by a staff member of Hornby
High that after school today
there was a man outside both of
the schools taking photos of the
children crossing the road. When
approached by the staff member,
he quickly disappeared. Please
remind your children about stranger
danger and to report suspicious
behaviour to an adult.”
A later update on the Greater
Hornby Residents Association
Inc Facebook page said the man
was “acting in the best interest of
the Hornby community.’’
City Mission benefits from
Ryman Healthcare’s generosity
TRUCKLOADS OF whiteware
and other residential items
have been donated by Ryman
Healthcare to the Christchurch
City Mission from a village site
being redeveloped in the central
city.
The fridges, dishwashers,
washing machines and clothes
driers come from Bishopspark
Retirement Village, which was
previously operated by Anglican
Living.
They will be worth tens of thousands
of dollars to the mission.
Bishopspark is near Ryman’s
existing Park Terrace site and
looks across Hagley Park in the
heart of the city.
Bishopspark suffered significant
earthquake damage and will
be rebuilt by Ryman.
City Missioner Matt Mark
said it had not only received
whiteware but also other items,
including chairs and furniture,
from the site that Ryman had
taken over.
He said the material was
invaluable in the sense that the
mission would otherwise have to
go out and buy these items.
The whiteware sales would
help generate tens of thousands
GENEROUS: Tens of thousands of dollars worth of
whiteware has been donated to the Christchurch City Mission.
Christchurch City Mission property officer Brendan Douglas
with some of the whiteware goods.
of dollars in income plus practical
use and provide an “incredible
impact,” Mr Mark said.
There was also use for the furniture
when the mission helped
those in need set up a family or
individual in a home.
Ryman Healthcare has already
taken on the obligations of some
of Bishopspark’s existing residents
and has plans to redevelop
both central city sites as one
village.
The mission has had some
items for sale at its Great Opportunity
Shop at 275 Hereford St,
and on to other shop locations,
currently being refreshed by the
charity.
The transfer of goods was a
WESTERN NEWS
result of luck and the foresight
of the mission’s property officer
Brendan Douglas who was on
the search for some fluorescent
lights and panel heaters for a
property project.
When he became aware of
such items at Bishopspark he also
found there was other material
Ryman was willing to donate.
With the help of the Student
Volunteer Army and other volunteers,
to save on labour cost,
all the whiteware was shifted
out over the course of a weekend
and put into storage, for eventual
shop sale.
The opportunity shops are
usually very busy all year round.
Staff say that on an average day
they will get 400-500 visitors to
the central shop in Hereford St.
The central city location is a
“master shop” for the mission’s
other five locations in wider
Christchurch.
But Mr Mark and Mr Douglas
said the people of Christchurch
should be careful to donate
goods that people could use
again, otherwise, the mission
was left spending a fortune on
dumping fees.
Champion Freight recently expanded operations, developing inhouse
software solutions for clients to enhance and improve logistics services. It
signals an exciting new era for the company, embracing technology
through recruitment and staff development.
Citing Vision College’s strong reputation for academic excellence and
digital expertise, we sought their assistance to appoint a proficient
developer from a range of IT enrolments. This led to the successful
appointment of Elliott who was an undergraduate student at the time.
Working together to facilitate a path to graduation through on-the-job
