SOARING temperatures have
led to unsustainable water use in
Christchurch which could result
in water restrictions.
On February 3, more than 260
million litres of water were used
across the city, an average of
552-litres per
person, resulting
in city
council revealing
the water
supply is under
“extreme pressure.”
A similar
amount of
water was

used on February 2 when the
temperatures in the city peaked at
35 deg C.
The measurements are the highest
recorded for the city’s water
use in a decade, the city council
said, calling for people to ease
back on their water use in the
coming days.
City council head of three

said that level of demand is

Burnside HS 60th
celebrations a success
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
CATCHING UP with old
classmates has been a highlight
for former Burnside High School
student Clive Chandler.
Mr Chandler was a key helper
for a two-day reunion marking
60 years since the school opened
recently.
First-day students who were
at the school when it opened on
February 2, 1960 celebrated the
school’s milestone last Sunday
and Monday.
About 40 former students attended
the two-day event.
Mr Chandler started as a
student at the school when it officially
opened in 1960.
The school opened in a staggered
approach with initially only
about 200 third-formers.
“It has been excellent. It has
been really nice catching up with
people I have not seen for 10-30
years,” Mr Chandler said.
He said while some people’s appearance
had changed a lot, some
people still look the same.
The celebrations have included
poetry, a speech from former
principal John Godfrey on the
school’s past successes, lunch and
dinner and tours of the school.
CELEBRATION: Clive Chandler, Robert Findlay, principal Phil
Holstein and deputy head girl Emma Hollingworth at Burnside

‘We need

sprinklers’
• From page 1
“Our concern is that if the demand
for water doesn’t lessen significantly,
we won’t have adequate
flow and pressure in some areas,
which is also a big concern when
it comes to the city’s preparedness
for fighting fires,” she said.
“We don’t want to have to
impose water restrictions, but
if the demand doesn’t ease off,
we will have no choice. We need
people to stop using sprinklers
and garden irrigation systems
to water lawns and gardens. If
your garden needs watering, use a
hand-held hose and water before
7am or after 9pm, when it’s cooler.
And please, avoid watering lawns
or grass berms.”
Level four water restrictions,
the highest level, were introduced
in parts of Banks Peninsula last
week, after streams that supply
drinking water to Akaroa,
Duvauchelle and Takamatua
dropped suddenly.
Level 4 restrictions means all
use of water outside the house
must cease.
Pupils prepare for garden festival
SCHOOL PUPILS from St
Albans Catholic School are
among those who have been
preparing for the Grow Ō
Tautahi Christchurch Garden
Festival.
St Albans, Burnside Primary,
St Marks, Heathcote Valley,
Banks Avenue, West Rolleston,
West Eyreton, West Melton, and
Diamond Harbour Schools are
taking part in the festival, creating
display gardens that reflect
their values and surroundings.
It will be held in the Botanic
Gardens from March 20 to 22.
The gardens have been growing
since late last year, but
extra work was needed over the
holidays.
Grow Ō Tautahi festival director
Sandi MacRae said school
kids will be on-site during the
festival to talk to visitors about
their gardens and what they
represent.
“When we were planning the
festival, we were clear it had to
reflect local people and local
ideas. It has been fantastic to get
so many local primary schools
involved to show off their gardening
skills in creations that
reflect their values.
“We’re working closely with
the schools to support their displays,
but these are all their own
creations and it’s their hard work
that has gone in to producing
the exhibits. I know Cantabrians
will love these gardens and they
are sure to be real feature of the
Festival,” she said.
The school garden creations
will include an edible salad bowl,
a celebration of native plants, a
focus on wellness, a reflection
on life in the red zone and many
more ideas.
Grow Ō Tautahi is a free,
homegrown festival designed
specifically for Christchurch. It
is a creative and environmentally
aware event that draws on the
best ideas from the community,
schools, garden designers, scientists,
food gatherers and chefs.

Care and financial certainty
LUXURY: The newly opened Ashley Suites at The Russley Village
aged care facility is offering a New Zealand first payment option
A NEW aged care facility at
a luxury retirement village
in Christchurch is providing
financial certainty for families
looking for quality care and
accommodation for their elders
in what is a New Zealand first in
the aged care sector.
The newly opened Ashley
Suites in The Russley Village is
offering a ‘care bond’ option for
families wanting to pay a lump
sum rather than daily fees for use
of a luxury care unit.
But rather than having to wait
until a unit is re-licensed as in
many other facilities in New Zealand,
the care bond offered at the
Ashley Suites ensures families
are repaid no later than 42 days
after the bond is terminated.
It is a New Zealand first in the
aged care sector and the village’s
parent company, Generus Living
Group, will be offering it as an
option at other care facilities it
is developing throughout New
Zealand.
Director Graham Wilkinson
says research has shown that
while families are happy to
purchase a care unit to secure
a premium level of care and
accommodation for their loved
ones, the uncertainty of when
they would be repaid was a cause
for concern.
“We looked at care models
both in New Zealand and
overseas and felt that an arrange-
to provide better financial certainty.
ment that provided first-class
hotel-style care while providing
security around financial terms
was needed. We believe this will
be the only care facility in New
Zealand that currently offers this
level of comfort.”
Wilkinson has a history of
five-star hotel developments
before starting Generus Living
and the company’s villages take
cues from resorts and hospitality
trends. This latest development is
an elegant mix of care suites and
one and two-bedroom serviced
apartments including in-house
physiotherapist, podiatrist, dietitian-designed
gourmet menu,
dedicated general practitioner,
hair salon, cinema and accessible
swimming pool.
Built on the former site of
the Russley Hotel, The Russley
Village is a mix of villas, townhouses
and apartments and since
opening almost 10 years ago has
been recognised nationally as
one of the most progressive retirement
villages in the country.
It contains its own cafe and brasserie
in its community facility,
The Homestead, and includes a
bespoke cinema, library, study,
computer area, arts and craft
space and a wellbeing suite offering
services such as a hair salon.
Take a free bus to
concert and fireworks
A FREE park and ride service is
going to make it easy to get
to the YES Power Sparks
concert in North Hagley Park
on Saturday.
Sparks, which features the
Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
and a dazzling fireworks
finale, is one of the biggest events
on the SummerTimes calendar
and traditionally attracts a crowd
of more than 50,000.
To make travel to the event
easy, a free park and ride service
will operate from Canterbury
University’s Clyde Rd car park
and from the Cranley St bus stop
by Eastgate Shopping Centre.
Between 5pm and 8.30pm
people will be able to park at the
university and the mall main car
park and then catch a free bus to
North Hagley Park.
At the conclusion of Sparks,
buses will return people to the
university and Eastgate. The
departing buses will leave from
Park Tce (across from Peterborough
St) between 10 and
10.15pm.
“The Night Noodle Market is
on the same night as Sparks so
we are expecting a huge crowd in
North Hagley Park.
“The free park and ride service
will ease the pressure on the
central city parking and make
it easy for people to enjoy the
night’s festivities,’’ city council
events and arts manager Lucy
Blackmore said.
“We are also going to have
cycle stands and scooter parking
available in the park, just past the
Armagh St bridge, for those who
want to bike or scooter in for the
night.’’
For those intending to travel
by car to the event, there will be a
drop-off point on Rolleston Ave
between Gloucester St and Armagh
St (outside Christ’s College).
People with mobility passes
will be able to park in the mobility
parking area on Chester St
West.
“It you do plan to come by car
please be aware that the Botanic
Gardens Armagh St car park
will be closed to incoming traffic
from 3pm and closed to all traffic
from 5pm,’’ Ms Blackmore said.
If you are looking for information
about places to park, there’s
a great interactive map on the
city council’s website.
The main Sparks concert will
begin at 7.30pm but there will
be live entertainment in North
Hagley Park from 6.30pm. The
Night Noodle Market will be
operating from 1pm.
The fireworks will begin about
9.40pm.
If the weather is wet, Sparks
will be postponed to Sunday.

New Year
NEW APPROACHES
Welcome to 2020: a new year, a new decade
and for many, myself included, a chance to try
new ways of looking at and maximizing life.
I’ve entered this year in a manner similar to
previous years. I’m excited about the future and
buoyed by the opportunities ahead. Some of
these are already in the planning and some are
absolutely unknown, but will no doubt show
themselves when the time is right (they always
do). I like to stay open to that. As a natural optimist
and perpetual organizer, I also like to review the
previous year, find the lessons – whether good,
difficult or somewhere in between – and then
learn from them.
So, with that in mind, here’s what is resonating
for me as I consider both the personal and the
professional path ahead.
Connection and happiness.
I’ve recently spent time looking at aspects of
well-being and happiness (that’s what a holiday
does for you!) and, as a result, the theme for our
company this year is ‘Well-being and Resilience’.
Why? Well, we know from experience that it
can get very tough in the real estate industry,
whether you’re brand-new or a veteran, and
as a leadership team we’re deeply committed
to relieving some of the stress, insecurities and
constant disappointments that can accompany
the profession. To do this, we’re enlisting the
support of numerous professionals to help in
the journey – experts in nutrition, sleep, financial
management and resilience – which I think will
be a change-maker. We are launching our team
support program with a presentation by a recent
New Zealander of the Year, Mike King.
In doing the research prior to concluding that we
need to increase our support framework, I came
across a study conducted by Harvard University.
This 80-year-old study, known as the Harvard
Study of Adult Development (one of the longest
studies on adult life), found that close relationships
and connection kept people happy and that
embracing a community helped them live longer
whilst also keeping brains healthier.
The study also found that the happiest of the
group of 724 participants credited amongst their
life lessons, a) not sweating the small stuff and b)
letting go of past failures.
As simple as both these lessons sound, neither
is easy, but both are deeply beneficial when
applied to the real estate industry – or many other
industries, for that matter.
So, connection, community, collaboration and
everything these things entail will be a vital part of
the year ahead for our company, as I hope they will
be for you.
If they’re not, and a new career is part of your New
Year plans, contact me. Life is simply too short
to be standing still or feeling disconnected, and
happiness is too fleeting.
Otherwise, try yoga (I'm going to!) and have a
magical year.

Champion Freight recently expanded operations, developing inhouse
software solutions for clients to enhance and improve logistics services. It
signals an exciting new era for the company, embracing technology
through recruitment and staff development.
Citing Vision College’s strong reputation for academic excellence and
digital expertise, we sought their assistance to appoint a proficient
developer from a range of IT enrolments. This led to the successful
appointment of Elliott who was an undergraduate student at the time.
Working together to facilitate a path to graduation through on-the-job
experience, we were thoroughly impressed with the proactive assistance
provided by Vision College. Elliott’s broad technical knowledge and ability
to adapt quickly to the role is a testament to the quality of tertiary
education provided and we look forward to repeating the process in the
future as operations expand.

This exceptional home offers a superb
contemporary lifestyle in a wonderful
location with uninterrupted views, sun
and flexible living spaces across two levels.
The beautifully quiet, elevated setting
is also surprisingly convenient: just 4

restaurants and amenities in Ferrymead
and Sumner.
Multiple living options opening to a
series of outdoor living spaces ensure
year-round enjoyment for family living
or entertaining. A huge open-plan living
area with pitched ceiling and wrap-around
views is the unforgettable heart of the
home. Timber-floored dining opening to a
north-facing deck sits alongside an elegant
kitchen with island counter and Delonghi
900 mm oven with gas cook-top. Spacious
sitting areas at either end of the room, one
with a gas fire and opening to a sheltered
terrace, enable a variety of configurations,
while a separate family room downstairs,
flowing directly to the garden, ensures
impressive versatility. The master bedroom
includes WIR, en suite and private terrace,
while three more bedrooms share the
family bathroom. A separate laundry and
large double internal-access garage are
convenient features, while easy, driveon
access and a spacious forecourt are a
welcome plus in a hill location.
Extras such as ducted heating, built-in
speakers and an outdoor fire confirm the
quality of this very special home. Set on 747
sqm grounds, amidst gardens landscaped
to perfectly complement the surroundings,
this home offers incredible ease of living
in an enchanting location. This is an
opportunity you won’t want to miss.
