Mystery odour causing a stink
• By Matt Slaughter
A MYSTERIOUS odour
coming from a Cashmere
retirement village was reported
to Environment Canterbury 62
times last year.
The smell is believed to be
coming from the laundry of
Lauren Hamilton said ECan
only received four reports of an
odour people said was coming
from the retirement village in
2019.
However, in the same year,
ECan also trialled a web-based
tool to report odours in the area
and there were 58 reports.
Ms Hamilton said the reporting
method used in the trial
“The retirement village
management has been working
with Environment Canterbury
as part of a pilot project looking
at new ways to manage odour.
We have been working very
closely with both the retirement
village management and a
group of Cashmere residents as
part of this,” she said.
Said Bupa Villages and Aged
corporate affairs Suzy Clarkson:
“We continue to engage with
Environment Canterbury and
are adhering to their recommendations
and requirements on
this matter.”
ECan also received five reports
of an odour from retirement village
residents throughout January
and February. None said the
odour was offensive based on
This is not the first time residents
near the retirement village
have raised concerns about the
odour.
Said Ms Hamilton: “In
September 2014, an abatement
notice was served requiring
the retirement village to cease
discharge of offensive and
objectionable odours beyond the
property boundary.’’
She said there has been no
breach of this notice since.
