Somehow, the conversation in Kitzbühel always revolves around

the Streif, a super difficult racing piste. If you love skiing, I’m sure

you’ve heard of it! In winter, skiing stars from far and wide gather

to see who can zip down the 3,312 m into the valley the fastest.

I‘ve often stopped to admire them as they descend 860 meters of

altitude in no time! It‘s really exciting to see who finds the best

line. Fritz ‘The Cat’ Strobl is the fastest so far at 1:51:18. Not bad,

but I think I can beat that

... and I’m truly at home in the mountains of Kitzbühel. I love nothing

more than to frolic in the lush grass-covered mountains and to have

many fun adventures in nature. Whether in summer or in winter,

there‘s always something exciting going on. This is especially true at

the Hahnenkamm, my absolute favourite mountain. From way up

high, the views of Kitzbühel are hard to top!

From the perspective of a small mountain chamois, however, the

Streif racing piste is actually much cooler in summer. I enjoy

romping in the lush meadows, though quite honestly it can

sometimes be a bit exhausting too. Phew! You really have to be

in good shape! Speaking of being in good shape: sometimes I

dream of being a real ski star and experiencing the thrill of the

Alpine Ski World Cup up close and personal!

The Sommererlebnis Streif, featuring all-new activity stations,

allows me to get in shape for the wintertime. In fact, I can’t think

of a better place for a great workout. This exciting journey,

which highlights the world-famous Streif racing piste,

begins directly behind the legendary Starthaus. Anyway,

let’s get going! There’s so much to explore and it’s the ideal

activity for the entire family!

Here we go!

Starthaus

“No starting area is as thoroughly silent as the one at

the Streif.“ (Dr. Michael Huber, KSC President)

Did you know that ...

... ski racers fly 80

meters in the air at

the first jump?

This task requires calm and my full concentration. I

proceed forward across a thin slack line towards the

starting line of the Streif but along the way my legs

begin to shake. Just a bit farther… I’ve almost made it to

the world-famous Starthaus. One last stretch over the

green climbing net and I’ll have made it: the entrance

to the Starthaus. Yahoo! Once up top, I feel the rush of

excitement as everything becomes quiet. The

Sommererlebnis Streif stretches out before me.

3-2-1 go! With a whoosh I descend down the grey tube

slide. Who knows, maybe I set a new starting record

?!?!?!?

Mausefalle

Ski racers must first overcome the Streif

racing piste’s steepest section right at

the very beginning: the Mausefalle

boasts a formidable 85% gradient!

2

Did you know that ...

... during the legendary

Hahnenkamm race,

racers on the Streif cover

the first 160 m in just 8.5

seconds?!

The Mausefalle awaits skiers just beyond the start. I haven‘t

seen a mouse yet, but it sure does look tricky! The slope

demands proper body control and the right technique: To

master the obstacles ahead, every muscle must do its part.

This is where good training pays off. But it‘s worth it. Pausing

for a breather in mid air, I take a moment to enjoy the

breathtaking panorama. Before me I can make out my

favourite swimming spot in summer time, the Schwarzsee

lake. But this course demands full concentration to reach the

next stage: the wobbly steps! There’s no time dawdle as

every second counts!

Did you know that ...

... racers are subjected to

centrifugal forces of up to 3.1

Gs on the Karusell curve?

These are the same forces

that astronauts feel when

they launch into space on a

rocket!

Karusell

4

Steilhang

The Steilhang is the iciest and most

challenging section of the Streif. Racers

have to count on sharp ski edges to make

it down this steep slope!

3

The Karusell entrance is a key point in which

the margin between victory and defeat is thin!

After all, racers can only see their exact landing

point while in mid air.

The Karusell demands both skill and strength from

competitors. In fact, it‘s not uncommon that in the

Karusell the decision falls who wins and who loses on

the Streif racing piste. Someday, maybe not this year,

I want to read my name, Gerli, on the winner‘s board

in the Legends Park. So I muster all my courage to

balance on the thin wire rope, like a small circus

chamois balancing high above. Carefully, one foot in

front of the other so as not to lose my balance, I

proceed to the end of the rope and reach up to grab

the colourful climbing grips on the rock face. For the

small downhill climbing course, I once again gather

all my strength with one goal in mind: reaching the

ground safely. Hooray! I did it! I completed the Karusell!

Did you know that ...

... the Steilhang is covered in

ice in winter? Ski edges have

to be ground to an 85° angle

so that the skiers can hold

the line as they zip downhill.

The time has come once again to muster all of my

courage. The Steilhang, icy in winter and really steep

in summer, spreads forth before me. Surefootedness

and a firm grip allow me to climb into the oversized

red climbing net. It‘s a bit shaky, but here I benefit from

my mountaineering experience - I’m sure you’ll make

it too! Once up top, I allow my gaze to wander over the

surrounding mountains. I’m proud to call Kitzbühel

my home.

Children activities

in the region

Even though the Hahnenkamm is my

local mountain, I still head over to the

Kitzbüheler Horn every once in a while.

The kids Klettersteig and the Kletterwiese

are especially good places to follow

my passion for climbing. If I still have

some strength left, I usually visit the Karst

weg Trail. This is an awesome place to

learn more about the history of the earth

long before even the dinosaurs roamed.

Back down in the valley, I like to visit my

friends in the Wildpark Aurach Wildlife

Park. In addition to local colleagues like

deer, goat or ibex, there are also some exotic

new friends to meet here as well.

Oh and did I mention the Sintersbach waterfall

with the legendary Drachensteig

trail yet? This is one of my favourite places

because if you listen carefully, sometimes

you can even hear the roar of dragons!

Another can’t miss highlight

is the Gieringer Weiher

pond at sunset. This is a

good place to look for fireflies

in summertime.

Did you know that ...

... the 7 metres wide

Brückenschuss is the

narrowest section of

the entire downhill

race?

Brückenschuss

The Brückenschuss demands fast skis and

good physical condition in order to hold a

constant speed. Tucking down low into a

squat is key.

There’s hardly time to catch my breath. The next station is just around

the corner: this is the notorious Brückenschuss section. This is no

place to lose your concentration as you approach the narrow

suspension bridge. It’s best to stay relaxed. Admittedly, I am a bit

afraid but skiing stars have to be brave so I venture onto the bridge.

Gosh, you sure do need good balance here, not unlike the coordination

demanded of skiers at the Brückenschuss. „Just don‘t look down,“ I

repeat to myself as I glide elegantly across just like a real ski racer.

Even as the bridge begins to wobble, I keep my balance and make it to

the other side! It’s not easy being a skiing star in summer!

Seidlalmsprung

Did you know that...

... the concept for the

Alpine Ski World Cup

was first hatched here

at the Seidlalm Alpine

hut in Kitzbühel in

1966?

Hausbergkante

This is perhaps the most important and probably

most spectacular jump of the whole race! The

slightest miscalculation could really cost you as

the distance to the safety nets is really quite short.

6

The Seidlalmsprung jump is the midway

point of the race piste.

7

Not a moment after catching my breath the next

challenge awaits. Already from a distance I can see

the huge arch that opens on the horizon. I can feel

the excitement growing as I proceed ahead

undaunted.

We’re nearly halfway now and this is my favourite station of all. I’ve been

saving all my strength for the Seidlalmsprung. At the climbing station there is

a giant swing. In preparation for the big jump, I first hop around a bit on the

trampoline. After so much action I relax a little in one of the wooden hammocks.

But not for long: I’ m here to play after all. Oh and have I mentioned one of the

best parts?

The giant water fountain is ideal on very hot

summer days to cool off and splash around in

the water. Not to mention how nice the

surrounding green Alpine pastures are. I love

to enjoy the beautiful nature here. Who knows,

maybe I‘ll discover a little butterfly before I

move on to the next adventure?

Did you know that ...

... the Hausbergkante jump

and its sharp left turn is one

of the Streif racing piste’s

most spectacular sections?

This is the section where the

almost 50,000 spectators can

see the racers the first time

live!

To my great excitement, I spy a huge swing in the

middle of the grey arch of the Hausbergkante. Full of

energy, I begin to kick and tuck my legs to build up

momentum. Faster, faster, faster! This must be what it

feels like to fly! But don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to

be an eagle, I want to be a skiing star.

12 | Sommererlebnis Streif

Sommererlebnis Streif | 13

Did you know that ...

... the traverse is one of the

roughest parts of the race?

The key is to stay high and

tight to take speed into the

Zielsprung jump to the

finish line.

8

Traverse

The ‘line’ skiers decide to take in the

traverse can often be the margin

between winning and losing. You

have to maintain speed and stay the

course. This is where rubber meets

the road!

Did you know that ...

... Kristian Ghedina‘s famed

straddle jump over the

Zielsprung at 150 km/h is the

stuff legends are made of?

Zielsprung

I tell you what: the Traverse is no joke! Fully

concentrated on the task ahead, I swing forward into

the wobbly climbing net. I really have to tense my

tired muscles to keep up my speed - not unlike the

real traverse, there are more than a few tricky

obstacles ahead and there’s no time to catch my

breath. I can hear the roar of the crowd at the finish

line. One foot in front of the other, I keep my speed and

my balance steady. Every second counts if you want to

stand atop the winner‘s podium and hold the golden

chamois trophy aloft!

Shooting forth at an incredible 150 km/h, racers fly

towards the finish line. Michael Walchofer’s 156 km/h

record speed is the fastest to date.

Now I‘ve finally made it! The flags at the finish

are in front of me and the audience spurns me

forward as a cheer erupts from the stands. I tuck

down into a squat and accelerate towards the

Zielsprung. One last adrenaline rush carries me

through the red tubes to the finish line. A quick

look at my official time: Have I set a new record?

After all, everyone who conquers the Streif in

winter or in summer is a winner. Having

exercised my muscles, I feel ready for the

upcoming ski season.
