Moving awayfrom ‘the norm’ and having an appreciation ofother staffing options automatically gains you alarger amount of potential job candidates.Tell us about the BOS Academy and howfabricators can use itThe BOS Academy is in Sheffield, next to MeadowHall shopping centre. The building has beenchosen for its accessibility and will be used forthree different areas: business, practical trainingand ‘inspiring talent’.Opened in November last year by Lord DavidBlunkett, the practical training area is built withapertures to fit windows and doors and there isalso a conference and teaching area.Both these areas are great for fabricators to use,either benefiting from our annual prospectus offree masterclasses or utilising the training coursesbeing run by BOS or other training partners.Partners sponsoring BOS also have limited freeuse of the centre as part of their package, makingit a great facility to train and launch new productsto customers and staff.Is local government funding available forfenestration courses?BOS is engaging with government agencies whichhave access to funding, and in certain areaswe have secured qualifications and courses infenestration available to fabricators.We are currently working with West YorkshireCollege Consortium, Sheffield City Region SkillsBank and Nottingham/Derby Local EnterprisePartnership.What would your message be tofabricators who feel that training, skillsand encouraging new talent is not apriority for them?Evidence and feedback from many of the largeorganisations we work with shows how investingin training and development is a key contributorto the longevity of a business.Fabricating is already a profession,qualifications exist for individuals choosing itas a career. These qualifications developed andawarded by GQA Qualifications not only enhancethe individual’s knowledge and learning, but offerthe company a better-skilled workforce.BOS has just been registered as a limitedcompany by guarantee. What does this mean?With the exception of employee and day-to-dayrunning costs, BOS will reinvest year on yearprofits gained from funding, sponsorships, andthe BOS Academy towards growing and promotingfenestration. The staus will also allow BOS toapply for funding and grants to help with skills,training and development.What’s next for BOS?The ethos surrounding BOS is longevity. Weacknowledge there is not going to be an instantshift of new people suddenly coming into theindustry, but hopefully the work we are doing nowwith employers will help towards making thatchange, in particular in their own communities.We will be putting a large amount of energy intoencouraging people to register for our Inspiringthe Future campaign: www.inspiringthefuture.org/fenestration/. This is crucial to raise awarness ofour industry in the future – anyone from an MDto an apprentice can sign-up and talk to schoolsand colleges.We will also be continuing to work with agencieswho can support funding and grant opportunitiesto help businesses secure skills and training,and help us increase awareness of fenestration.We are improving our communication methodsthrough our website, social media platforms andother online services to ensure we share as muchinformation with the industry as possible andplan to set up a number of advisory groups tosupport the network.How can fabricators get involved withBuilding Our Skills?Follow us on our social media platforms –Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter.
