Timber Windows & DoorsA TIMBER SYSTEM SET FOR GROWTHOwen Dare, a founder partner of The Joinery Network and managing director at OT DareJoinery Consultants, talks about how fenestration manufacturers can now make superior, fully certified timber windows and doors. There’s a growing appetite for timberwindows. The sustainability generation hasmoved public opinion to look at what weeat, wear and what we put in our homes. Timberis the natural fit for windows, but the lack ofsupply for good quality, certified windows in UKdesigns has stifled growth, and many installershave discounted wooden windows as an option.Born through a shared frustration that timberwindows had become a niche product rather thana popular choice for UK homes, eight companiescame together to create The Joinery Network. Ourfirst task was to bring a consistent supply of timberwindows, manufactured to all the regulationsnew-build homes require, the same standards thatPVC-U and aluminium installers expect. The Joinery Network consists of eight founderpartners: BJ Waller, Balls2 Marketing, CalWin,Close Brothers, DJH Group, Fiscale, Leitz ToolingUK, and OT Dare Joinery Consultants. Together,we offer a complete range of specialisation forwindow fabrication. Alongside my 30 years’experience in manufacturing timber windows, wealso have tooling, hardware, finance, tax credits, joinery software and marketing.Lignum windows and doorsSince our launch at the FIT Show last year, wehave developed Lignum, a UK-design, PAS 24tested window system.Other timber window systems that have all theaccreditations are often European in design, withultra-modern styling and chunky outerframescommonly used with tilt-and-turn mechanisms. So having a UK design of the window was key forus, as most UK home designs required slimmerframes and more traditional multi-pane openings. As well as the UK design, Lignum ticks all the“Lignum is a UK-design,PAS 24 tested windowsystem that ticks allthe boxes for easymanufacturing”boxes for easy manufacturing. The foundermembers clubbed together to fund thedevelopment of the system and pay for producttesting to create a complete range of timberwindows and doors.Lignum, by The Joinery Network, includes acomprehensive range of every product fabricatorsneed to offer a suited range of certified windowsand doors. It includes vertical sliding box sashwindows, vertical sliding spiral balance, top & sideswing flush casement and storm-proof windows. For doors, there are entrance doors, (includinglow thresholds), French doors, single doors,(including in and out opening), and bi-fold doors. We’ve invested in testing Lignum to PAS 24:2016for security – this is the latest standard requiredfor SBD and Document Q; and BS 6375: 1 forweathertightness and energy efficiency; as wellas Document M for accessibility. This means allproducts in the range are tested to the most up todate Building Regulations. With testing now complete, we offer licencesfor fabricators and joinery manufacturers onindividual window and doors, so that companiescan choose the products they want. They canhave just one licence, the whole range – oranything in-between. This means that fabricatorscan now manufacture a certified timber windowat a fraction of the cost of designing and certifyingtheir own product. The Joinery Network partners have alreadyprovided expertise to support joinery companiesset up efficient timber window and door lines andare already seeing Lignum windows and doorsbeing manufactured and installed into new-buildand refurbishment projects.Information and workshopsThe Joinery Network is committed to buildinga network of independent timber window anddoor manufacturers.
