Article Software SupportHARD FACTS FOR SOFTWAREDean Hodges, managing director at BM Aluminium, outlines the advice andsupport available when it comes to installing CNC machinery and software.Over the course of 2019, we saw a 20%increase in the number of customersinstalling LogiKal CNC links with us,bringing the total number of machine links wehave completed in the UK to somewhere over 130.Last year, many of the links were for fabricatorsgetting into the aluminium market for the firsttime, but most were existing LogiKal users whowere looking to automate more of their processes,either to increase their efficiency or in response tothe current shortage of skilled CNC operators.MACHINERYThe aim for many, of course, is to de-skill theoperator role as much as they can, so that lesstraining and experience is required on the shopfloor, and that makes perfect sense given thatthe skills shortage is probably most acute infabrication.The growth in spending has obviously been greatnews for machinery and software companiesand BM Aluminium had another record year in2019. But, my sense last year was that too manyfabricators were still ordering new machineswithout consulting us at all beforehand. We areentirely independent and have absolutely novested interest in promoting one machine ormachinery company over another, but we arevastly experienced in setting up CNC machinesand we know that our help and advice can bereally valuable to fabricators of any size.We are definitely not looking to encroach upon ourcustomers’ own territories; we are simply keen todemonstrate how they can get more value fromus as their software partner and benefit from ourfree, independent advice.Dan Hodges and Perry Mace, our implementationmanagers, are now a formidable team when itcomes to installing software. When customersinvolve us in the decision making process earlyon, Dan and Perry can visit them, talk about whatthey are looking to achieve and then recommend thebest options to suit their specific factory set ups.As well as ensuring that the installation of anymachine they do choose is properly scheduled andcoordinated so that we are primed and ready toorganise the software links as soon as it is installed,they can also ensure that customers are fullyinformed if they are thinking of ordering a machinewhich we can’t actually link to in LogiKal yet.False economyWith several newer, largely budget entrantscoming into the machinery sector now, wehave had a couple of occasions recently wherefabricators have been disappointed to learn thatthe lower purchase cost might actually turn out tobe a false economy.As the trend towards automated CNC linkslooks set to continue into 2020, we haverecently reviewed the set up package we offer tocustomers and are now offering both standardand added-value options. The standard optiongives customers two days of onsite installationsupport from a BM Aluminium technician, whilethe added-value alternative replaces the secondday onsite with an extended remote session aweek or so later. With a remote session priced at20% of the cost of an onsite installation day, thisrepresents a significant saving for fabricators.The main reason for introducing the secondremote training day was because it givesfabricators the chance to work with the machinefor a few days and draw up their own list ofniggles and queries which we can then resolvefor them either on the phone or via TeamVieweronce they are up and running.
