Next deadline - Wednesday 11th March
Houston Community Council
Meeting held on the 15th January 2020
Policing: The attending Community Police Officers reported a total
of 12 recorded crimes for the period. The crimes included 1 account
of theft, 1 account of theft by housebreaking, 1 account of robbery,
1 account of common assault, 2 accounts of anti-social behaviour, 2
accounts of fraud and 2 road traffic offences.
Main Street Crossing: A local resident attended the meeting to
request support from the Community Council, for a crossing to be
implemented on Main Street, and ask advice on how to proceed
given that Renfrewshire Council had refused the request after a
traffic review. Suggestions included reducing request from a lollipop
man to zebra crossing and, painted ‘slow’ signs on road. Both HCC
and councillors confirmed their support for this ongoing campaign.
South Street Play Park Committee: A representative updated
those present that the fundraising group was formally established
having taken over from the former Houston Playpark Improvement
Group. The group had lots of fundraising ideas and were looking
for available grants to support their initiative. The two primary
schools and Gryffe High School voted on the name, ‘Helicopter
Park’, for fundraising purposes. A community cookbook to raise
funds is underway. Access issues is one of the main concerns of the
development
Connecting Houston: The project to connect Houston to the National
Cycle Network has been awarded £5,000 to develop the first stage
of the project plan – Connecting Houston. This will be done through
community engagement (social media and drop-in event), further
research by the sub-group, and is to be completed by the end of
May. There were discussions on how best to do this and a draft
summary statement on the proposals will be shared with residents
in due course. Other potential stakeholders include schools and
Johnstone Jets Cycling Club.
Renfrewshire Council - Consultation on Admissions to Schools
and Placing Request Policy: From 27th January – 31st March,
Renfrewshire Council is consulting with communities, interested
groups and parents on the proposals below.
1. Change to primary 1 registration dates;
2. Revise primary 1 registration allocation of catchment places;
3. Revise transfer from primary to secondary allocation of
catchment secondary places; and
4. Revise allocation of placing request places.

Houston and Killellan Kirk Carnival
CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS
This years Carnival will be held on Saturday 2nd May with some new
additions to the side shows and this year will be first for a different
type of food available. It is widely rumoured that a Street Food stall
will available and having been at the tasting session of the foods that
will be for sale I can thoroughly recommend you visit it. All the old
favourites will still be there beef burgers, hot dogs and vegetarian
hot dogs. A visit to The Tearoom will not disappoint as tea/coffee
and homebaking will welcome you. Tearoom tickets will be available
in due course but you can always pay at the door. Remember the
parade where you can join all the other animals being led by the 1st
Houston Boys and Girls Brigade Pipe Band.
The carnival is a successful annual event which generates funds for
the church and wider community and it relies on the support of
volunteers. We are seeking volunteers to assist with the set up,
running of the event and clear up afterwards. If you’re able to offer
any assistance, even if only half an hour of your time, we would
be most grateful. Please contact us via the Facebook page or at:

Houston Helicopter Park Project
Attention all bakers, cooks and foodies!
The Houston Playpark Improvement Group is creating a community
cookbook of favourite family recipes we would like to see ‘preserved’
for the future.
Have you inherited a superb soup or a fantastic flan from a gran?
Maybe created an original dish and want to see your tasty pastry
published for posterity?
We have started compiling these culinary gems and will be
publishing them later this year in a book to raise funds for improving
the playpark in Houston’s Helicopter Park. Email them by March
1st to houstonplaypark@gmail.com and please include a picture or
drawing of your finished dish if you have one.

Houston & Killellan Kirk
40 for 40 Lent Challenge
Trussell Trust, who run the major Foodbanks including the one in
Paisley, are encouraging supporters to donate 40p for each of the
40 fasting days of Lent – as an alternative to giving up chocolate,
wine or whatever. Perhaps the generous congregation of Houston
& Killellan Kirk, rather than donating the money, may put a slightly
different slant on this. They have been asked to consider setting
aside an item per day of about 40 pence value – either a toiletry or
food item. It is recognised that 40 pence does not purchase much,
as we and certainly those who need support from the Foodbank
can testify. So it could be an 80 pence item every two days or £1.20
value over three days. Perhaps it is unfair to make greater demands
on these wonderful Foodbank supporters, but they will certainly
be up for the challenge, and those organising the Renfrewshire
Foodbank will continue to be amazed!
