A permit is required foreach brown bin presented containing garden waste and can onlybe purchased online.On receipt of payment, the householder will receive a permit whichshould be attached to the back of the bin to indicate to collectioncrews to uplift the bin. They were pleasantlysurprised to report that there was little evidence of anything amiss.In fact, many of the plants looked amazingly healthy for the time ofyear. At the time of writing, storm Dennis is forecast for the nextweekend and, although it’s not thought to be as severe as Ciara,there will still be crossed fingers among the team.The Group met up at the beginning of the month to discuss thissummer’s planting for throughout the village, and some of themlater went along to our supplier with our order for this year’s plants.It’s not always an easy task to decide what to choose. We like tomake things a bit different every year, and ask ourselves what didwell in previous years and what wasn’t so successful. The troubleis that it’s often difficult to tell whether certain plants didn’t like thesoil conditions, or if it was the weather to blame. Still, we’re alwaysoptimistic for a good display.*PS: No, we don’t actually have a Damage Assessment Team, but itdoes sound quite impressive don’t you think?Green CornerKerrera by Bridge of Weir HillwalkersTop Five Spring Gardening TipsSpring is one of the busiesttimes in the gardener’s calendar.If you get it right now, you’ll beready for a spectacular summergarden. Here are our top fivetips.1. Refresh Your PerennialsThis is the season to revitaliseyour soil and plants with somemulch. There is also still timeto work through the borderand divide up your perennials.Lift them, divide the crown andre-place the plant in a smallergroup or elsewhere, discardingthe central part of the crown.2. Grass, Grass, Grass!Spring is when you should giveyour lawn its first cut of theseason. First, however, it’s worthservicing your lawn mower to ensure its sharp and working well.If the blades are sharp when you first start cutting, the grass willkeep in better condition. Another good tip is to keep your mowerset at a high level for the first few cuts which should encouragethe grass to become stronger. Also, don’t overcut. This onlyhelps weed seeds to penetrate. Longer grass catches these seedswhich then will be destroyed by the next mowing.3. Plant One On Me!If you’re quick, you can still plant bare rooted plants like softfruit, top fruit, roses, trees or shrubs – although aim to get thisdone by St Patrick’s Day (17th March).4. Pay Attention to Spring BulbsNow is a good time to lift and divide bulbs which have finishedflowering. Take off faded flowers and seed-heads and tease outthe bulbs and leaves then replant them individually about 60 cmapart.5. Don’t Forget Your VeggiesIf you are choosing to raise crops from seed you should nowstart them in a warm area or heated propagator if the groundis still to cold. But as soon as the shoot arrives, lift them to acooler, well-lit area or they will become weak. Keep turning yourseedlings to avoid them developing on one side only.Bridge of Weir Horticultural Society40Will March come in like a lion and go out like a lamb, or will itbe more of the wild weather experienced in February? The onlything gardeners can predict is that in March we should be out therepreparing our gardens for the season ahead.On Thursday 12th March we will meet at 8pm at The Bridge topick up tips on ‘Getting To Know Your Soil’. Some we will knowbut doubtless there will be new ideas as well. If you want to makethe most of what you’ve got – come along and if you’re new togardening or thinking it’s time to refresh your ideas – definitelycome along.By then we will also be more knowledgeable about poisonousplants as Louise Bustard, a regular guest, will talk on this subject inFebruary. These walks will be taking places as part of theCMRP ‘Walking Festival’, now in its 3rd year, on Saturday 23rd Mayand Sunday 24th May.I am really keen that this project be a community led one and to thatend, I am looking to recruit further volunteers for different aspectsof the project.Have you ever fancied looking through the ‘Cairn of Lochwinnoch’to read Andrew Crawfurd’s views on village life, or are you a keen‘birder’ who could check an old bird list against current sightingsaround Airds Meadow, Barr and Castle Semple Lochs? Do you haveold family photographs, household object, audio or video recordingswhich we could copy or photograph?
