BANKS PENINSULA residents
can now have a say on priorities
set out by their community
board.
The city council is seeking public
feedback on three-year draft
plans for community boards for
the first time.
The idea behind the initiative
is to inform people of board
priorities and to guide boards’
decisions on local activities, projects
and facilities, among other
things.
Bay Harbour News reported
last week the consultation on
the Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board plan had
started but at the time, the Banks
Peninsula Community Board’s
had not.
Priorities set out by the Banks
Peninsula Community Board
include a destination management
plan, wastewater treatment
plant renewals, upgrading
toilets, finalising the Naval Point
Development Plan, maintaining
parks, improving rural roads,
developing the Akaroa Village
plan, mitigating flooding risk in
the Little River Village area and
having a plan for the future use
of the Godley House site.
Russell Irving a ‘big wheel’
at annual EstuaryFest
• By Dion Crooks
ONE MAN who knows how
crucial children are to the success
of community entertainment is
Russell Irving.
He has been the chief ticket
seller, child organiser and go-to
man at the ‘big wheel’ at all eight
of the EstuaryFests run by the Mt
Pleasant Residents’ Association,
including this year’s event, which
was held on Saturday.
His hand has always been first
up when the call goes out for volunteers
from Ferrymead Rotary,
which has helped with organising
parking and running sideshows
at the festivals.
Said Mr Irving on what keeps
bringing him back every year:
“The enthusiasm of the young
people and the joy on their faces
as they spin round and round.
“Their enjoyment rubs off on
you. You can’t help but have a
great day out as well.”
The traditional ferris wheel was
replaced with a lower-altitude
‘Sizzler’ version this year and it
proved hugely popular.
Largely because, in Mr Irving’s
seasoned judgment, the loweraltitude
ride was more attractive
and less threatening to a wider
