Wednesday February 26 2020 News Restored gun emplacements to reopen • By Jess Gibson A PIECE of history tucked away at Godley Head has been restored and is to reopen to the public. Gun emplacements damaged in the February 22, 2011 earthquake have recently been reinstated at the Godley Head coastal defence battery. Built in 1939, the battery is ranked as one of the top ten New Zealand coastal defence heritage sites. In the early years of World War 2, people living in Canterbury were comforted that the two six inch long-range guns of the fort ensured their city was not defenceless against a surprise attack. The Department of Conservation has an exclusive event planned for today to celebrate the restoration of the gun emplacements for people and groups involved with the site from 9am to 11am. Ngāti Wheke will walk those attending from the gate of the gun placements onto site with a mihi whakatau, karakia and waiata. There will be guided tours, brunch and opportunities listen to speeches by a DOC ranger, mural artist Wongi Wilson, the Godley Head Heritage Trust, and the NZ Defence Force. Four crews from Sumner, Woolston, Central and Governors Bay attended the 40m x 10m blaze Evans Pass Rd about 3.30am on Monday. Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Daryl Sayer said the fire was extinguished quickly but crews stayed for about an hour to make sure it did not flare up in dry areas. A similar early morning blaze, of about the same size, happened on the same road last Tuesday. Police are investigating both fires, which have been deemed suspicious. BAY HARBOUR In Brief PAGE 3 CORRECTION Last week Bay Harbour News reported that Victoria Andrews had written a letter of correspondence to the Banks Peninsula Community Board raising concerns over cruise ship impacts on behalf of the Akaroa Civic Trust. However, Ms Andrews actually submitted the letter as a resident rather than as a member of the trust. SECOND HUI IN AKAROA A second community hui will be held in Akaroa on Thursday to discuss concerns and opportunities which were raised during a first meeting in November. Residents can listen to key stakeholders speak from police, Akaroa Health Centre and Akaroa Area School who will help explore ways forward and share what is happening in their respective areas. The hui will be held at The Gaiety, Rue Jolie, from 5.30pm.
