NGO to recruit 400 fellows as basic school teachers By Elizabeth Uwandu A NON-Governmental Organisation, the Teach For Nigeria, TFN, is set to recruit 400 fellows that will serve as basic school teachers in continuation of its efforts to provide solid foundation for Nigerian youths at the basic education level. The teachers are to be deployed in understaffed schools mostly located in rural areas. According to the Chief Executive Officer, CEO of TFN, Mrs. Folawe Omikunle: “At Teach For Nigeria, we believe that there is no single solution to a problem as complex and systemic as educational inequity. Addressing it requires many solutions, from many directions. While we cannot singlehandedly solve these problems, we believe that we can act as a catalyst to build a formidable network of determined leaders who understand the root causes of inequity and are committed to challenging it. “The TFN Fellowship programme is a two-year full-time paid commitment that is designed to build a movement of leaders who will work towards eliminating educational inequity by teaching in under-served schools in low-income communities across Nigeria.” It, therefore, came as a surprised recently in Ogun State at the announcement of the opening for the By Elizabeth Uwandu BABCOCK University, the Isaac Delano Foundation and the Pan-African University Press have instituted the Isaac Oluwole Book Prize for Yoruba Studies to recognise outstanding works and fiction that continue to uphold and represent the legacy of Yoruba icons like Isaac Delano. " Don warns against indiscriminate consumption of mushrooms By Adesina Wahab A PROFESSOR of Food Microbiology and Mycology has warned members of the public to desist from eating mushrooms indiscriminately especially when in doubt about its true identity, saying such act could lead to death or serious injury. Prof. Bamidele Akinyele gave the warning while delivering the 119th Inaugural lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA titled: Fungi and Fungal Products: Integral Part of Industrialization in a Developing Economy. Akinyele said that presently, most of the fungi that could not be properly and adequately identified in Nigeria were being sent to the UK or USA and therefore proposed the establishment of mycological culture collection centers in tertiary institutions for proper and adequate documentation of various fungi in Nigeria. Highlighting the importance of fungi in economic development, the don said fungi play significant roles in the health sector and industries where different fungi are being used in the production of various metabolites and enzymes of industrial importance. The lecturer also stated that fungi have been identified to be effective and ecofriendly in the bioremediation of crude oil polluted soil particularly in the Niger-Delta area of Nigeria. UNESCO sets up Bioethics office at Babcock By Glory Ojojo AUNIT of the International Network of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics (Haifa) has been established at Babcock University, BU. The approval was contained in a letter addressed to the Deputy Vice- Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Iheanyichukwu Okoro. BU is one of the four such units in Nigeria and the first and only private university till date. Council approves Makinde's appointment as deputy provost InterswitchSPAK opens science competition portal INTERSWITCH has announced the commencement of another edition of its National Science competition, InterswitchSPAK 3.0 in Nigeria. Students from senior secondary schools are now free to register for the competition on the InterswitchSPAK portal. InterswitchSPAK is an annual pan- African competition aimed at reigniting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects among secondary school students. For the registration, each school is required to present its best six science students in SSS2. However, for mixed schools, at least two female students must be among the best six. Every registered student will participate in the qualifying examination at any of the centres where she bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Guidance and Counselling. She holds Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Guidance and Counselling from the University of Ado-Ekiti now Ekiti State University. She joined the services of the College as graduate assistant in 1998 and rose through the ranks to the position of chief lecturer.
