What Is the Difference

Between Vegans and

Vegetarians?

As the names already imply, both vegans and

vegetarians focus on plant-based diets. The reasons

for choosing these eating habits can stem from

similar concerns – health, ethics, religion, or trying

to treat the environment better. Nonetheless, there

are indeed several differences between the groups.

What are they?

People often aren’t aware of the difference between vegans and vegetarians.

So, what exactly is it?

8

In short, one can say that vegans are more consistent

and stricter with themselves and their diet.

Vegetarians primarily avoid meat and meat products,

but tend not to have an issue with milk, eggs and

honey. Certain types of vegetarians will sometimes

eat fish (pescetarians), chicken (pollotarians), or will

even have meat every once in a while (flexitarians).

Vegetarianism is chiefly a way of eating and is more

benevolent than veganism.

Vegan diets are strictly plant-based and a vegan avoids

all meat, milk, eggs and honey – basically everything

whose production is linked to animals, their use

and abuse for human needs. Another aspect of this

lifestyle is refusing any kinds of animal products –

they won’t wear anything made of leather, fur, feather,

wool or silk and also avoid using cosmetics tested on

animals or made from their bodies. That is why these

days, you will find vegan products even in drug stores,

which may seem illogical to the conventional user or

consumer. Veganism is more of a personal philosophy,

since it has a more complex view of humans and

humanity as a whole.

The Philosophy of

Vegetarians and Vegans

Not Just a Diet, but an

Outlook on Life!

When somebody becomes a vegan, they surely

have serious personal reasons for that, as it is

a rather huge lifestyle change. That is because

it’s not just about food; if you are vegan, you also

have to quit a variety of things others consider

completely normal and of daily use – you avoid

leather clothes and footwear, you take great

care not to use shampoos or other products

tested on animals, and you have to be quite picky

when it comes to food as well – even an innocent

marmalade can be non-vegan if animals were used

to produce its coloring.

Veganism isn’t just a diet; it is a state of the soul,

a philosophy, a way of seeing the world.

Most world religions endorse at least vegetarianism,

rather than meat-eating.

Animals are feeling beings just like humans.

We should protect them, not hurt them, vegetarians claim.

A veg-based diet is definitely healthier and can decrease

the occurrence of civilizational diseases.

The meat and dairy industries destroy the environment,

and the spread of vegetarianism could eliminate their negative effects.

BAKED ASPARAGUS IN PUFF

PASTRY WITH CASHEW CREAM

8 servings, prep time 30 min

Ingredients:

• 8 green asparagus spears

• 200 g / 7 oz. cashew nuts

• 2 tablespoons lemon juice

• Salt

• Pepper

• 2 Tbsp. leaven

• Puff pastry

• Cumin

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 180 °C / 356 °F

2. In a pot, bring salted water to boil. Put

asparagus spears into the boiling water for

several seconds until they start to bend

slightly. Then take them out and put them

in a jar of icy cold water.

3. Blend cashews in a blender with water,

lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Blend for a

longer time, so that you get a nice smooth

4. Roll out the puff pastry thinly and cut it

5. Place an asparagus spear diagonally into every

square of pastry and 2 spoons of cashew

cream in the middle of each. Add leaven to
