The upgrade has seen a complete re-design of the building, with the supermarket’s size increasing by 500 sq m. The number of checkouts has boosted along with an expanded range of products on offer. Brothers James and Richard Turner are continuing their family legacy as third-generation owners and operators of New World Fendalton. Said James: “It really has been a team effort, and to see our community enjoy the refurbished store has been incredibly rewarding. It brings together the hard work of so many people.” Other new features include an ecostore refillery and the installation of a new butchery counter. New World Fendalton has a strong family history. The brothers’ great grandfather Walter Turner immigrated to Christchurch when he was just 14-yearsold and secured a job in a local grocery store, and eventually owned the store in 1936. Walter’s son, Jim, affectionately known as ‘Gentleman Jim,’ took over the store in 1961 and had owned it up until his death in 2016. Originally part of Fendalton Mall, the Memorial Ave store had been owned by the Turner family since its opening and up until 1970, it was named Turners Grocers. Richard believed their greatgrandfather Walter and grandfather Jim would be proud of the supermarket’s evolution and continuation of its characteristic family business charm. Said Richard: “Supermarkets have changed a lot since the business opened back in the 1930s. I think changes we have made will ensure we continue to provide a top-class shopping experience for decades to come, just like our grandfathers did before us.” James and Richard are carrying on the family legacy, continuing to be a mainstay of New Zealand’s grocery collective, but also an integral cornerstone of the local western Christchurch community. In Brief MCLEANS ISLAND SAFETY Safety concerns on Pound Rd and Mcleans Island Rd were raised by workers in the area at the latest Waimāero/ Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board meeting. The speed limit was reduced to 80km/h, but large numbers of heavy vehicles passing by still posed risks. LANGDONS RD TRAFFIC Langdons Rd residents have been informed of possible solutions regarding safety concerns when entering or exiting properties due to the new Northlink shopping complex. The Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board advised that white lines will be re-installed near driveways and the city council will regularly monitor the situation going forward. GRANTS APPROVED A $500 grant has been approved for Kayleigh Anne Wheeler as she heads to the 2020 World Irish Dance Championships in Dublin, Ireland this April. A group of Papanui High School students will also receive a grant of $1800 for attending the Australian International Music Festival this July in Sydney, Australia.
