“The [city] council is investigating
mitigation procedures to deal
with the issues that the estuary
trust people raised and we agree
that there should be measures.
We think there should be screening,
we think that a low barbed
wire between the trail and the
pond [estuary] levee is all that’s
necessary.”
Said city council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge: “The pathway
would be flanked by a security
fence several metres to the
pond side of the path, and screen
planting along the estuary
shore. Planting along most of
the estuary shore already
exists; the project is to provide
screening of most of the remaining
gaps.”
Mr Rutledge said additional
protective measures, which
may also be considered include
“educational signage promoting
the site values, dog exclusion
signage, regular monitoring
of compliance, track closure
at certain times” and “vehicle
barriers at entry points.”
Mr Doudney said these measures
won’t work and birds will
suffer.
“Since last winter, we’ve got
new data from a student who was
working over the summer on bird
disturbance. There will be a massive
impact.”
Mr Doudney believes the
360 Trail group’s members are
avoiding meeting with the trust
so they don’t have to acknowledge
its concerns. He said the trail
group most recently pulled out of
a meeting on February 17.
DISAGREEMENT: Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust chairman
Kit Doudney says claims that a proposed pathway next
to the Bromley oxidation ponds will not harm birdlife are not
accurate.
Said Mrs Millar: “That is not
accurate.
“It was decided that a meeting
with them [the trust] when
their opinion was so entrenched
was not necessarily going to
be helpful, given that there is a
process under way, which the
council has outlined.”
FITNESS: People have until March 11 to decide their favourite
option for a dog agility area in Radley Park, Woolston.
Dog park feedback sought
• By Matt Slaughter
EVERY PERSON and their dog
is being asked for feedback on
the layout of a dog agility area in
Woolston.
The public has until March 11
to tell the city council which of
the two options being proposed
for Radley Park they prefer.
The first option is for the creation
of two new exercise areas,
one for medium to large dogs
and one for small dogs. A new
plant bed and tree for shade have
also been proposed as part of
this option.
Option two is proposing two
new exercise areas, one for medium
to large dogs and one for
small dogs, three new plant beds
providing separation between
the two areas and three new
trees for shade.
PEGASUS POST
Fencing around the new dog
agility area, with two double
gates for access, will also be installed
if this option chosen.
Funding for the fence will
be requested through the city
council’s 2021-2031 Long Term
Plan and installed when funding
is available if option two is
selected.
The Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board will
consider all the feedback given
and will approve the prefered
option.
The dog agility equipment will
be installed by July.
