Racism Book Discussion
7 p.m. Mar. 5, Frankfort
Public Library District,
21119 S. Pfeiffer Road,
Frankfort. This month we
discuss “The New Jim
Crow” by Michelle Alexander.
Alexander presents
the case that slavery may
have been abolished in
1865 with the 13th Amendment,
but the U.S. criminal
justice system functions as
a contemporary system of
racial control — relegating
millions to a permanent
second-class status. Copies
of the book are available at
the library. Register online
or call (815) 534-6173.
FRIDAY
Build a Rain Barrel
Registration deadline is
March 6, 10-11 a.m. Saturday,
March 14, Founders
Community Center, 140
Oak St., Frankfort. Using a
rain barrel to capture water
for use around the yard is
not only good for nature,
it’s also good for your wallet.
In this class, you will
learn from experts at The
Conservation Foundation
about the benefits of using
rain barrels, how to
use them correctly, and
then assemble your own
55 gallon barrel to take
home! All tools/supplies
will be provided. Please
have a way to transport
your barrel home. The fee
is per barrel, so feel free to
bring along family members
to learn about rain barrels
and the many benefits
they provide. Fee is $65 for
residents and $70 for nonresidents.
Coffee Cake & Crime Book
Club
9:30 a.m. Mar. 6, Frankfort
Public Library District,
21119 S. Pfeiffer Road,
Frankfort. This month’s selection
is “The Department
of Sensitive Crimes” by
Alexander McCall Smith.
In the Swedish criminal
justice system, certain
cases are considered especially
strange and difficult.
In Malmö, the dedicated
detectives who investigate
these crimes are members
of an elite squad known
as the Sensitive Crimes
Division. No case is too
unusual, too complicated,
or too insignificant for this
squad to solve. Copies of
the book are available at
the library. Register online
or call (815) 534-6173.
