Dogs get their chance to shine in
afamily-orientated rural show

‘‘Who Let the Dogs Out’’ is the theme of
this year’s Hawarden A&P Show.
Dogs will be rounding up ducks,
showing off their obedience skills,
displaying their agility, and showing
how adept they are at yarding sheep.
The North Canterbury Dog Training
Club will give adog obedience display at
the west end of the grounds, along with
adisplay of Rally­O, adog sport that can
be enjoyed by dogs (and people) of any
age and ability.
In Rally­O, the dog and their handler
are required to perform adifferent
exercise every few metres. Exercises
include combinations of turns, presents,
finishes, changes of position, heeling
around cones, halts, stays and jumps.
Even though Rally­O has evolved from
competitive obedience, it does not
require the same level of precision.
Dog owners are being encouraged to
bring along their dogs and show off their
abilities in the obedience and agility
classes, and try them out over an agility
training course.
There is also adress­up class for dog
lovers 10 years and under.
Husky Rescue Christchurch will also
give aharness display.
Working farm dogs will also show off
their skills in the dog trials, where
huntaways and heading dogs will be put
through their paces.

Birds of afeather ... Duck herding displays will be held throughout the day.
Donald Stuart will give displays of
duck herding throughout the day at
locations around the ring, and terriers
will once again entertain in the terrier
race in centre ring.
The show, which has the community at
its heart, offers plenty of entertainment
in every corner of the picturesque
showgrounds.
Aspecial community area will host a
feast of entertainment, displays and
demonstrations.

There will be an inflatable climbing
wall, agiant bouncy castle, Silly Billy
the clown, aface­painting fairy, a
Sunflower sandpit, lolly scramble,
rides and plenty of side­shows for the
children.
The communityarea will host
inflatableaxe­throwing,
mechanical bullrides, and live
music featuring Katie Gunn and
the Hurunui College Band.
BradLake,representing
Koaka, Original Canvas and
Brothers Green, will give a
presentationinthe community
areaat10am. He will also be
speaking for Mainland Hemp,
about hemp products.
While Mycoplasma bovis has
had aprofound affect on the
show’s once strongcattle
section, Dunblane CattleStud
will ensure cattle remain a
feature.
The stud will have six
18­month­old Shorthorn bulls
on display, and six cows with
calves at foot.
AYoungPersons Challenge
run by the HurunuiYoung
Farmers Club willtake place
throughout the day near the
community area. The challenge
will provide plenty of tasks and
challenges for entrants.
Meanwhile, there willbe
plenty of action in the ring all
day, with pony and horse
classes, horse hunter classes
and showjumping.
Aroundthe grounds there will
be sheep, poultry,horses, dogs,
trade displays,vintage cars,
tractors and machinery,
photography, flowers, home
produce, crafts,Lego, and fruit
and vegetable competitions.
The show ends witha
community barbecue, and there
will be one final fling for all
those gathered —alawnmower
race in the mainring at 6pm.
The curtain will come down
on the day at 7.30pm.

well­earned rest mid­afternoon as
temperatures began to climb at
last year’s Hawarden A&P Show.
Horses will be among awide array
of animals competing for honours
at this year’s show.
