Lithopolis history Here is some history of Lithopolis, according the village of Lithopolis newsletter: •The town was originally platted in 1815 and was known as “Centerville.” •It was chartered as Lithopolis”in 1836. •The name “Lithopolis” is Greek for “Stone City.” It refers to the large deposits of stone found in and near the town, some of which was used in the construction of The Wagnalls Memorial Library. Dr. Bender Scholarships Canal Winchester City Council will award two $1,000 scholarships in honor of the late Dr. John Bender, former council member, educator, and coach. Graduating seniors are encouraged to review eligibility requirements and submit applications at canalwinchesterohio.gov. Applications will also be available in the guidance offices at Canal Winchester High School and Bloom-Carroll High School. The deadline for applications and completed materials is April 1. Paying municipal taxes The collection and administration of local income tax for the village of Lithopolis is handled by the Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA). A RITA Taxpayer Assistance Event will be held March 12 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Canal Winchester Community Center, 22 S. Trine St., Canal Winchester. Agents will be on-site to answer questions and assist with RITA municipal income tax return preparation. Whether you’re a Lithopolis, Bloom Township, or Canal Winchester resident, there’s a scholarship for you - with eight different scholarships being offered in all. www.columbusmessenger.com Cruisers win title The Groveport Madison Middle School 7th grade girls basketball team defeated rival Canal Winchester to win the Ohio Capital Conference title. The team went undefeated in the SWSC tournament taking first place in the 2019-20 South-Western City Schools District Tournament Girls 7th Grade Championship. The Cruisers’ overall record this season was 14-3 in Coach Zach Cowan’s first year as coach.
