In Brief
SPEED LIMIT CHANGES
Speed limit changes have been
implemented for roads in
Edgeware, Mairehau and St
Albans. Most roads involved
have changed to a 40km/h
speed limit, with a number of
new 30km/h areas. The changes
aim to deter motorists coming
off the Christchurch Northern
Corridor on Cranford St from
short-cutting through residential
streets in the area. Check the city
council website to see all roads
affected.
ST ALBANS SEWER WORKS
After a one-week delay, sewer
renewals on Forfar St have
commenced. This is due to the
existing sewers reaching the end
of their life therefore upgrades
were required. On-road parking
will not be possible during
the works. The renewals are
expected to be completed by late
March/early April this year.
SHIRLEY LIBRARY CLOSURE
Shirley Library on Marshland Rd
will be closed for refurbishment
on Sunday, March 22 at 4pm and
is scheduled to reopen on April
30. The service desk, however,
will be closed from Friday,
Fundraisers for Lachie’s cancer battle
• By Jess Gibson
“AS A result of this most
unwanted experience, you get to
see the very best in people.”
This is Huntsbury mother
Kelly Sharpe’s reaction to the
support her family has received
as her 12-year-old son, Lachie
Sutherland, battles neuroblastoma
for a second time.
So far, about $26,000 has been
raised towards an $80,000 goal to
afford self-funded MIGD therapy
in Sydney, which Lachie is scheduled
to receive later this month.
The treatment delivers targeted
radiation to the rare type of cancer
which develops in infants and
young children.
With a number of fundraisers
to go Mrs Sharpe is “very optimistic”
the target will be met.
An auction and comedy night
with live music on March 14 at The
Tannery’s Cassels Blue Smoke is
the next event, and Mrs Sharpe is
hoping to sell 350 tickets.
Following that, there will be a
quiz night, karma keg night and
a Hoyts movie screening.
Before his MIGD therapy, Lachie
has spent the past five months
undergoing eight rounds of
chemotherapy and seven cycles of
immunotherapy and radiation.
He relapsed with neuroblastoma
in August after showing
no evidence of the disease since
2013.
It was 2012 when Lachie was
diagnosed for the first time.
He flew to Sydney, aged four, to
receive MIGD therapy and was
there for his fifth birthday.
His last treatment fell around
the same time as his father, Chris
Sutherland, died from metastatic
melanoma after having been
diagnosed the month before.
But six years on, Lachie was
embracing life.
About to embark on his final
year of primary school and excitedly
considering high school
options.
Relapse was the last thing on
anyone’s mind.
Said Mrs Sharpe: “I think
everyone was surprised when
the results came back showing a
relapse.
“We were devastated and
Lachie
feel fortunate
to have had
the support
of so many
people during
Lachie’s second
battle with
neuroblastoma
cancer.
heartbroken and quickly catapulted
back into a world we never
wanted to revisit.
It was made harder by the fact
Mrs Sharpe had lost her mother
to cancer early last year.
But in finding a silver lining,
she said she has been “really
fortunate to have the support of
so many wonderful people.
“I think we all struggle to
rationalise why a child should
have to experience cancer, so
when they do, it seems to be
something that calls people to
action. They want to help, to
make a difference and ease his
suffering.”
From the moment we met Cameron and his team it was clear
that this experience was going to be different than our previous
experiences with other Real Estate companies. Cameron and his team
were efficient, to the point, and understood our situation straight
away and told us they’re expectations for our property. They then
exceeded these expectations in less than 2 weeks. We should of gone
with the best first time around.
