Harry’s ‘impressive’ garden earns award

tracks

WALKERS ARE being put in
danger by mountain bikers when
they ride on some shared south
Christchurch tracks, Over Forties
Tramping Club members say.
The Canterbury Mountain Bike
club says it is only a few riders giving
others a bad reputation.
Tramping club chairman Lawrence
Allpress told the Spreydon-
Cashmere Community Board
at its March 3 meeting some
mountain bikers using shared
tracks such as those at Bowenvale
Reserve and Victoria Park ride
fast, put walkers in danger and
abuse club members when they
get in the way.
The board asked the city council
if better signage can be installed
promoting a hierarchy between
walkers and cyclists, which puts
walkers first. It requested a meeting
between it, a city council staff
member and members of the
public to discuss the issue.
City council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge said city council
staff “will review and investigate
best practice for code of conduct
education” on tacks in these areas.

Big turnout likely for
Run or walk
for a
good cause
THE 46TH running of the Les
Mills City2Surf will be held on
Sunday and this year’s event
looks set to be one of the biggest
in recent times.
Runners, joggers and walkers
of all fitness levels will take on
either the 14km or 6km options,
both finishing at Ferrymead
Playing Fields.
Event organiser Jon Holmes
says entries are up on last year’s
event which attracted close to
8000 participants.
“It doesn’t matter if you
haven’t trained. Either distance
can be walked. It’s just about
getting out on a Sunday morning,
getting a breath of fresh
air and doing something that
gets the heart pumping,” said
Holmes.
The 14km event starts at 9am
at Pioneer Stadium, and the
6km event starts at 10am at
Hansens Park, all culminating
for a massive finish at Ferrymead
where there will be
plenty of entertainment and
prizes on offer.
Participants will also have free
entry into Ferrymead Historic
Park.
“We’re going fizzy-free again
this year. We’ve also changed
from a free Powerade to a
free Pump at the finish line.
That’s another step in the right
direction for health,” said
Holmes.
This year’s partner charity is
the Prostate Cancer Foundation

FIZZY DRINK SCARE
A fizzy drink can found in the
letterbox in Halswell on Tuesday
prompted a response from police.
When a Halswell resident checked
their letterbox, they found the
spray-painted can with a note next
to it reading “pp juice, open for
some fun.” Police were then called
to the address on Brenda Pl and
are investigating but at this stage,
it appears to have been a prank.

A Kidney Toxicity Survivor
Over the next 2 months, I thought id write
about two cases that required much input
and care from our entire team of experts. We
treat hundreds of sick patients weekly and
many of them spend weeks in our hospital
being nursed back to full health.
We have so many
special long term
patients that we all
connect with on
different levels but I
cant write them all up
here. We don’t have
favourites because
we love and want to
treat all the animals
that walk through our
doors. I chose these
two patients as they
highlight diseases we commonly see and
treat here and they also show incredible
owner commitment and positivity towards
the whole process. It has to be a team
approach and great communication is key.
I know we have the right team of people,
hospital setup and equipment to do our best
job possible but clients need to be onboard
for, at times, a long, complicated, emotional
journey. You can absolutely guarantee
though we will always do our BEST for your
pet.
TORIN is a young Birman who presented
suddenly unwell 3 months ago - lethargic,
losing weight, vomiting and just not himself.
After a series of testing we deemed Torin
was suffering from
Acute Kidney Failure
due to a suspected
toxicity (possibly
Lilies). His creatinine
kidney enzyme level
was through the roof
, he was dehydrated
and we suspected
a bacterial UTI. He
was immediately
admitted for intensive
care treatment with
intravenous fluids
and supportive care
medications. He spent 2 weeks as a hospital
inpatient receiving Intravenous fluids, food
and medications were fed to him through
a feeding tube in his neck and every day
his devoted owners visited and spent time
cuddling, grooming him and nursing him
back to good health. Once home he was
continually checked many times a week to
make sure he wasn’t deteriorating. Torin
was an incredibly tolerant and an easy to
handle patient which was lucky as he was
jabbed with needles constantly, had oral
medications daily and had every test possible
including radiographs and ultrasounds.
In the end, Torin survived his kidney
failure attack. When we was very unwell
his creatinine reading was greater than
1202umol/L - now
it is normal at
187umol/L. Many
patients wouldn’t
recover from this.
He had incredibly
special owners who
completely trusted
and listened to our
recommendations
and supported us
in his recovery by
visiting often, which was what Torin needed.
Kim encouraged him to eat one bikkie at a
time from her phone and he got to wander
around a room not being caged all day.
Our hospital nursing team was absolutely
A1 fantastic at catering for all his needs,
respecting him, treating him gently and
spending lots of time giving him cuddles and
grooms. We were honest with Torin’s owners
about his prognosis and the time required
for him to start showing improvement. In
this case I believe the feeding tube was the
game changer as we could deliver all his
medications and nutritional requirements
without going near his
mouth and he could be
successfully managed at
home, with the people he
loved and trusted.
We all get super excited
when we get to catch
up with Torin. He’s like a
member of the family and
we all feel proud that we
played a part in getting
him home. Without fail he
urinates in my room on
arrival- not sure what this means exactly, but
then I get cuddles so I’m taking that as a win.

is the “harvester” and

garden once they are ready
to eat.
Mr Marr started gardening
when he was about
10-years-old, living on the
West Coast and has loved
it ever since.
Said Mr Marr: “It
[gardening] is rewarding.
The pleasure of going out
and working and then
going out and picking your
tomatoes or whatever you
want and it’s good to sit
down and have our lunch
with tomatoes out of the
garden, lettuce out of the
garden and basil out of
the garden for a nice salad
with a little bit of meat, but
I don’t grow the meat.”
Mr Marr said winning
an award was a good feeling
given he applied for
the competition at the last
minute.
“I thought, I’ll be cheeky,
so, I just applied.

moment, silly thing but,
yeah, it was nice to have
[an award],” he said.
Mr Marr said of those
that won awards, “I think
I’ve probably got the
smallest garden, with a fair
amount of everything in it,
so it’s nice.”

this fund. A city council spokesman
did not say where the
money for the fund will come
from if it is set up and this will
depend on options provided by
staff.

the fund at the board’s March
3 meeting, telling members
they have treaty obligations in
the decisions they make and it
would be good to do more to
honour this.
Ms Potter did not comment
on the idea when asked by
Southern View.
Board member Keir
Leslie said in spite of the
commemorations at Waitangi
being “particularly special,”
there are lots of very meaningful
events on Waitangi Day in
Christchurch.
Mr Leslie likes the idea of
helping to bring residents
closer to the treaty but said the

the purpose of promoting the
well-being of our community
and we use that money all the
time for things like sports trips
or cultural events and I think
that in principle, this idea just
fits very neatly within the arena
of the discretionary fund that
we already have.”
Linwood
pool a
step closer
THE DESIGN of the new $22
million Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood
Pool has moved to the next stage.
The community can expect to
see the project begin on-site in July.

on track to be finished by summer
2021-22.
A sod-turning ceremony will
be held ahead of work starting in
Linwood Park on the corner of
Linwood Ave and Smith St, where
the pool complex will be built.

the construction, after doing the
same for Taiora QEII Recreation
and Sport Centre in 2018. It has
also been the lead contractor on
the New Brighton hot pools – He
Puna Taimoana, which are scheduled
to open next month.
Said Ms Buck: “Apollo Projects
has already delivered a first-class
facility in the east and is wellplaced
to bring the Linwood Pool
design to life.

‘Clearly there’s an issue’

down Bowenvale and almost
got skittled by a bike.
“Clearly, there’s an issue
between walkers and cyclists,”
he said.

the club does not speak for all
riders but: “Many of our riders
are also participants in other
outdoor disciplines, be it running
or tramping, so they will be
well-familiar with shared trail
etiquette from both perspectives,
namely on a bike and on their
feet, and have empathy for the
other users they encounter.
“Whilst I have also heard
anecdotal evidence of occasional
deliberate trail obstruction to
riders by other users, I would
equally hesitate to jump to
any conclusion that this is
a systemic problem within
those communities, but rather
the actions of a few outlier
individuals,” he said.
Said Mr Rutledge: “No accidents
have been reported that
we are aware of but we have had
several reports of near misses
and a number of reports of verbal
interactions.
“We are regularly monitoring

council to do more to encourage mountain bike riders to be
respectful of walkers on shared tracks like those at Bowenvale
Reserve.

the city council in January last
year, he said the tramping club’s
more than 400 members were
asked if they have had problems
with mountain bikers in the
past.
Said one member’s response:
“I’ve pretty much given up
walking on Bowenvale and
shared Victoria Park tracks
because of the downhill riders.
Getting up and down the
Bowenvale valley access to the
start of the tracks has always
been fraught – I’ve decided I’m
too old to be able to leap out of
the way and constantly having to
be ultra-alert isn’t pleasant.”
Readers have their say on
the recent articles on the
360 Trail group’s proposal
to build a pathway beside
the Bromley oxidation
ponds and the effect this
may have on birds.
Spenser Holmes – I read
with interest your article regarding
the proposed pathway near
the migratory birds in the estuary.
It seems to me that the answer
is blatantly clear, redirect the
pathway away from the birds.
Apparently there is an alternate
route.
The city council report puts the
risk to the birds as low to moderate.
Moderate sounds scary and
low is even too darn high in a
world where biodiversity is on the
run and even the city council has
declared for a climate emergency.
The 360 trail people are thinking
like dinosaurs, it is a new
world out there and any nonessential
disturbance of nature
isn’t on. Having a pathway by the
water isn’t essential, nice maybe
but not essential. Maintaining
the health and viability of the
migratory birds is essential.
As for the city council, my oh
my, not a lick of commonsense
there. Didn’t the fact that the estuary
is part of an internationally
recognised flyway register the
fact that extreme care was necessary
when planning the route of
the pathway, obviously not?
Emma Lynch – I find it
difficult to believe that the
proposed 360 walkway will have
a low to moderate ecological
effect.
Having witnessed the coastal
pathway remove the tern’s
roosting area, wading birds
no longer feeding up to the
estuary edge due to human
disturbance and dogs now being
exercised in the estuary bed,
it is astonishing that the 360
interest group proposes that they
are able to mitigate against any
environmental effects of another
walkway.
Many of the birds in the
estuary are already deemed at
risk or declining.
We need to be protecting this
fragile estuary ecosystem, and
maybe, in this case, leaving
footprints is just too damaging.

Stedman on track for
Tokyo Paralympics

HILLMORTON paralympic
sprinter, William Stedman
has continued his progression
towards the Tokyo Paralympics
with three strong results at
the national track and field
championships at Nga Puna Wai.
The 20-year-old won the senior
men’s long jump with a best
effort of 5.68m and then won
the 400m in 55.22sec and the
200m in 25.21sec.
The former Middleton Grange
School student was the youngest
member of the New Zealand
Paralympic team four years ago
at just 16.
Stedman, who suffers from
cerebral palsy, won bronze medals
in the T36 400m and 800m
events.
Stedman said in spite of
strong winds, he was happy

are good friends.
“John Quinn has improved
my mental ability a lot.
“George and I have been
working together for five years
and he’s very good with the
technical stuff and getting the
best out of me plus there’s a
good friendship there too.
“He has allowed me to focus
on the big picture and not get
so weighed down by the little
things.”
Stedman is studying engineering
part-time at the University
of Canterbury and believes it
has been easier to train for his
second Paralympic campaign
than his first.
“University is just a lot more
flexible than high school which
has really allowed me to focus

CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ High
School touch rugby player Luca
Tracey has been selected in the
New Zealand under-16 team to
tour Australia.
The 14-year-old year 11 student,
who lives in Sumner, was part of
the Canterbury under-16 team
which won the national title in
Auckland in January after going
through the tournament undefeated.
Luca is also the CBHS under 15
sevens captain who are the current
South Island champions.
The team will meet for a training
camp in Auckland in July
before playing in the Australian
State Championships on the Sunshine
Coast in September.
“They had selectors at all our
games at nationals but when I
found out I made it, I was quite
surprised given to make it because
I am quite young for the grade.
The playmaker said he took up
the sport socially five years ago
and has progressed through the
ranks ever since.
“I’ve always enjoyed running
fast and since I do track and
field as well, the skills help both
sports,’’ he said.

Roasted snapper makes miso happy

Forget the line-up of pots
and pans and try this
simple one-dish roasted
miso butter snapper with
broccolini

Serves 2
Ingredients
1 Tbsp white miso paste
25g softened unsalted butter
2 180g skinless snapper fillets
1 tsp sesame oil
2 small red chillies, thinly sliced,
plus extra thinly sliced to serve
1 Tbsp soy sauce
1 Tbsp peanut oil
2 bunches broccolini, halved
lengthways
150g enoki mushrooms, stalks
trimmed – if you can’t find them,
just leave them out
1 tsp sesame seeds
Juice of ½ lime
Thinly sliced spring onion, to
garnish
Directions
Preheat the oven to 200 deg C.
Line a baking dish with baking
paper.
Combine miso and butter, then
spread over snapper. Combine
sesame oil, chilli, soy sauce and
peanut oil in a bowl.
Add broccolini, mushrooms
and sesame seeds, toss to combine,
then spread over the base of the
prepared baking dish. Top with
snapper.
Roast for 18-20min until
snapper is just cooked and the
broccolini is tender.

plum compote
Serves 4
Ingredients
1 cup (uncooked) white medium
grain rice, cooked to packet
instructions
2 Tbsp cornflour
250ml milk
300ml thickened cream
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract

400g red-flesh plums
1 cinnamon stick
¼ cup caster sugar
¼ cup (60ml) port

For compote, place all
ingredients in a pan with ¼ cup
water, stirring to combine. Bring
to the boil over medium-high

How is Covid-19 spread?
What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a type
of coronavirus. There are simple steps you can take to protect you and your family/whānau.
How is it spread?
COVID-19, like the flu, can be spread from person to person. When a person who
has COVID-19 coughs, sneezes or talks, they may spread droplets containing the virus
a short distance, which quickly settle on surrounding surfaces.
You may get infected by the virus if you touch those surfaces or objects and then
touch your mouth, nose or eyes.
That’s why it’s really important to use good hygiene, regularly wash and thoroughly
dry your hands, and use good cough etiquette.
What can I do to stop COVID-19 spreading?
•Cough or sneeze into your elbow or by covering your mouth and nose with tissues.
•Put used tissues in the bin or a bag immediately.
•Wash your hands with soap and water often (for at least 20 seconds).
•Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
•Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.
•Avoid personal contact, such as kissing, sharing cups or food with sick people.
•Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as doorknobs.

Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with
a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and
senior clients visit complaining of pain in one of their joints.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. The images show
how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back
muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain
are the red areas in the drawings), a knot
in a muscle on the back of the shoulder
blade can give a deep pain in the front of
the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way
near the groin can give an ache in the knee
(especially at night in bed).
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health
and wellbeing.
The same lack of movement can be the
reason for your knee pain or your shoulder
pain and the same few treatments could
make a huge difference for you.
At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the joint, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
balance. They teach a movement sequence

that stretches the joint in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,

(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt)
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated
than surgery. After only one treatment
you should know that it will work for you.

Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a

damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.

What makes a great
heat transfer system?
There are a number of Heat Transfer
systems on the market. Smooth-Air
ventilation specialists offer a range of HTU
Heat Transfer Units with carefully selected
components to optimise the system:
They use insulated duct to transfer the
heated air with as little heat loss as possible.
The fan moves sufficient air for the distance
and number of rooms, without being noisy.
The diffusers send the heat to the floor, not to
skim the across the ceilings. All components
are good quality - designed to operate for
years without problems.
Smooth-Air’s HTUs come in a range of
options: One to four rooms, with or without
thermostat and with a choice of grilles
and diffusers. HTUs improve energy
efficiency in your house, as you are
using excess heat. They have low power
consumption - only 80watts for the three
room system. Circulating air through
the house also reduces the risk of damp.
You can also choose the HTU version
with downjet diffusers, which throw the
warm air downwards to the floor. These
downjet diffusers can also be adjusted to
regulate which room receives the most
warm air.
An average size living room requires
2-4 kw of heating, yet appliances such as
log burners generate heat in the region
of 10 -20kw. This leaves an excess of 8
-16kw of heat which sits at high level
in the heated room, usually above door
level.
Heat transfer units work best where
very hot air has ‘stratified’ into a layer
near the ceiling. So heat pumps, which
circulate warm air around the room with
no layering, are not suitable as a heat source
by themselves. However, if you have both
log burner and a heat pump, heat transfer
systems with thermostat can work very well:
The heat pump stops operating once the heat
from the fire has heated the room, and the
heat transfer kicks in above this point, once
there is a layer of hot air at the ceiling.
