Alexan<strong>de</strong>r Serov served as the mo<strong>de</strong>l for this<br />
drawing. He was not a waiter, but a great Russian<br />
composer and the father of one of Russia’s greatest<br />
painters, Valentin Serov, who took lessons from<br />
Repin in Paris. Alexan<strong>de</strong>r Serov featured in Repin’s<br />
Slavic Composers of 1872, still in the Grand Hall<br />
of the Moscow Conservatoire for which it was<br />
commissioned. See figure 10. This is not a sketch<br />
for that painting, but an example of Repin re-using<br />
a figure from a recent work, still fresh in his mind.<br />
