The Clocks is a real bookstore; we don’t sell toys, games, lotto tickets or stationery, just wonderful books. The Clocks specialises in Children’s books, Cookbooks, and Crime and Mystery books, but has a terrific range of fiction and non-fiction, too. “You have so many beautiful children’s books” our customers often tell us. We are biased of course, and so can’t help but agree, but we do aim to have the best range of children’s books in the city. For the youngest we have interactive touch-and-feel, lift-the-flap and board books. Next, is an extensive selection of beautiful picture books, some telling classic tales, others gentle stories with subtle messages on love, loss, and friendship. There is plenty of bedtime reading to help get toddlers to sleep, too. Also at The Clocks is a carefully selected range of classic and contemporary titles for older children and young adults, including books specifically designed and written for the dyslexic or reluctant reader. Anyone can find a recipe for almost anything online these days. So why does The Clocks Bookshop have more than 700 titles on cooking, drinking and food writing, and why are sales of cookbooks on the upswing? Well, because cookbooks offer more than just recipes. In many ways they are like big, beautiful story books that evoke emotions, and ask and answer questions about society and culture. And, unlike online recipes, cookbooks have permanence-they can be passed down from generation to generation (with all the scribblings in the margins, the dog-ears and food-stained pages) thus contributing to a sense of family history. We are such big fans of the ‘Golden Age of Mysteries’ that we named our bookstore after the Agatha Christie novel, ‘The Clocks.’ Golden Age mysteries were written during times that didn’t have CCTV, DNA, mobile phones and technology. Rather, it’s the brainpower of the detective that is the most vital to the stories of Christie, (more than 60 titles in stock!) Margery Allingham, Georges Simenon, Dorothy L. Sayers and Francis Durbridge. So, if you are fan of the Golden Age, or the more hard-boiled American style of the likes of Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and James M. Cain, come in and have a sleuth around. Contemporary crime fans are also well served with many titles from CWA Dagger winners such as James Lee Burke, Donna Leon, Ann Cleeves, and Peter James. And our ‘Crime Down-under’ features all the novels of Christchurch’s own, Paul Cleave.
