Sub-Saharan Africa
• Financing Hurdles. One of the main
obstacles that may hamper the immediate
implementation of off-grid solar energy in sub-
Saharan Africa is the cost of installation. This
is for the fact that people in this region are
financially-challenged. So, it is very evident that
there will be no local company that can open a
huge business endeavor such as this; hence,
the need for foreign investors.
• Consumer’s Trust. Again, the main pain
point of the locals is their lack of trust and
confidence in this new technology. So, there’s
a need for more dissemination forums to make
sure that people understand the benefits of offgrid
solar energy.
• Stability. Once the off-grid solar energy
system has been in place, the next challenge
would be stability. Service providers must
develop contingency measures just to ensure
that off-grid solar facilities function well.
Because if people experience a regular power
outage, they will again try to rethink the viability
of using off-grid solar energy in remote places
such as sub-Saharan Africa.
