New repertoire for Advent Recent and secular Christmas music
David Bednall
Make We Merry
This eight-movement piece sets texts from the 15th to 19th
centuries to a variety of choral textures with a highly characterful
accompaniment. A vast array of sentiments is depicted, from
quiet expectance and gentle wonder to boisterous jubilation, and
the different movements provide a wonderfully paced journey
through these moods. The final movement brings back motifs
from the opening and grows to a thrillingly climactic ending.
Also available in the original SSAA version.
David Bednall
David has been busy
writing a number of
new pieces including
a large-scale anthem
for The Birmingham
Bach Choir and
Paul Spicer, entitled
The Dear Bargain. The commission is to
mark the centenary of the choir and will
be premiered on 4 April at St Philip’s
Cathedral, Birmingham, UK
topical theme of the plight of refugees, drawing
Birdland
A musical drama for
soloists, unison
voices, SATB chorus,
ensemble
With a story and texts by
Charles Bennett, this engaging
musical drama follows the
quest of Pip the Sparrow to
be accepted into the Dawn
Chorus. Along the way Pip
meets singing sensation Shamira
the Golden Nightingale and
discovers a great secret, causing the sparrow to at last understand the
power of having a song that is completely his own.
As well as the rich variety of solo roles, which feature spoken narration,
the work provides great dramatic potential for the unison and mixed
choruses, who play an integral role in the storytelling. The memorable,
eminently singable melodies are complemented by a characterful
Exploring themes of identity, inclusivity, and self-belief, this heart-warming
Red Boots On
Red Boots On is a funky setting of a poem by Kit Wright, brought to life
by Chilcott’s jazzy chords and groovy syncopated rhythms. The melody
begins in unison and grows in texture throughout the piece, and is
accompanied by a characterful piano part. Originally published in Five
Songs for Upper Voices.
Walking the Red Road
This expressive piece is based on The Seven Sacred Virtues of the
Lakota; the title describes a commitment to purposefully live by these
values, the metaphorical ‘red road’, being a spiritual way of life. The
unhurried tempo gives space for the listener to reflect on the text,
while sumptuous harmonies create a rich cushion of sound.
Mack Wilberg
A Cloud of Witnesses
This dramatic choral work sets a text by David Warner that artfully weaves
together multiple witnessing stories of Christ’s Resurrection into a single
narrative. Wilberg employs an effective array of musical techniques to
depict the protagonists’ experiences: from rapid figurations that move
through the orchestra creating a sense of momentum and breathless
astonishment to pairings of voicings to convey an act of collective
witnessing and declamatory exclamations of praise.
two large-scale choral works, The Prodigal and
A Cloud of Witnesses. Also included are new
compositions, Children of Light and Tree of Life,
and a moving orchestral piece Lament: And
arrangements.
Mack Wilberg
This little light of mine
This radiant anthem is an arrangement of the hymn tune ‘Lattimer’, often
paired with the popular gospel song ‘This little light of mine’. Wilberg gives
each section of the choir a presentation of the melody, before building
towards a climatic finish with new harmony and texture as light spreads
‘across the land’.
