The artworks illustrated on the following pages are by <strong>Jacob</strong><br />

<strong>Lawrence</strong> (U.S.A., 1917–2000), with the exception of the painting<br />

on page 76 (CAT. 10), which is by Gwendolyn Knight <strong>Lawrence</strong><br />

(U.S.A., b. Barbados, 1913–2005). All works are part of the permanent<br />

collection of the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford<br />

University, as the Gift of Dr. Herbert J. Kayden and Family in memory of<br />

Dr. Gabrielle H. Reem, except for the silkscreen series The Legend of John<br />

Brown and Eight Studies for “The Book of Genesis,” which are the Gift<br />

of Joelle Kayden. The catalogue entries are ordered chronologically by<br />

artwork date. Sheet dimensions are recorded for any objects with a paper<br />

support, including paintings, drawings, and prints. The titles of works<br />

published in portfolios reflect the artist’s spelling and punctuation.<br />
