“it didn’t just happen”
Everything in life that we know, do and aspire towards, is because we learned it
from someone. It was taught to us either directly or indirectly. We then are the
products of what we learn, and the choices we make with them.
The same is also true, where our tennis is concerned. Every thing you see a
player do on the court, they learnt it from someone, directly or indirectly.
So whenever you see a club player, or a weekend hacker with some wierd looking
strokes, the majority of times is, that they saw a stroke, and try to mimic it,
and because they didn’t get professional help, they believe that’s the swing that
they saw.
In the same context, if you see a 5 year old prodigy, it’s because someone is
taking the time to teach and develop this player. It didn’t just happen.
DEADLY
SILENCE

Your silence can be deadly to your opponent.
They won’t know how to read
you, and the chances of them getting
a mental foothold in a match, dimishes.
So if you mess up some easy shot,
don’t act all crazy throwing your racket,
and yelling. Go silent mode, in that way
you won’t display any weakness.

MOST
players
practice
incorrectly

Most players practice incorrectly, because,
they practice in a vacuum. In
other words, they practice individual
strokes, which are not connected to
other strokes, within a sequence. For
example, if you have a great kick serve
out wide on the ad side, you should be
practicing how to hit short and medium
forehands, down the line shots, as
winning shots.

WINNING
DON’T JUST
HAPPEN

Winning don’t happen accidently. Winning
has a formula that can be studied
an learnt. Developing those skills, takes
lots of patience, and sometimes it even
requires trial and error to be refined. But
once you’ve learn it, it’s easy as 1,2,3.

ATTIT
You can have the winning formula, and
not win, simply because you have the
wrong attitude. It’s like having a high performance
car, and using the wrong gas.
Other cars are going to run pass you. In
the same way, winning requires the right
(mental) attitude.

Cover Story
From USA with Love
My name is Jana Zollner
(pronounced Yonna). I was
born in Burlington New
Jersey. I have been playing
tennis for 13 years.
I recently completed my
high school tennis career
this past fall playing first
singles.
I am homeschooled but
thankfully our local high
a
R
school allows homeschoolers
to play sports.
I was fortunate to be able
to play for them and am
thankful that Rancocas Valley
received some notoriety
from my accomplishments.
Interscholastic
South Jersey Interscholastic
Championship, the
first for a female tennis
player at Rancocas Valley.
I made it through to
My senior year was overall
the greatest season
ever, I qualified for NJ-
SIAA (New Jersey State
Athletic
Association) one last
time, though the outcome
wasn’t what I had
hoped.
I still had a lot of fun just
getting a chance to play
with the best of the best
in New Jersey.
I also got to play in the
the quarterfinals. That
was a big deal because
in the second round I got
bageled in the first set.
I shook off that set and
came back to win the
second set in tie break
and then won the tie
break 10-3.

My high school team
won our first-round state
match with a 5-0 win. It
was the first time in 5
years Rancocas Valley
got to advance to the
semi-finals.
I also made it to the
semi-finals of the Burlington
County Open, before
losing to Nationally
ranked Renna Mohsen-
Breen. I gave it my best
As captain, you always
want to win for your team.
The best part of the entire
year was winning my
final scholastic league
county tournament with
straight-set wins.
I came in as the third
seed. In the semi, I played
a fantastic player who I
had never beaten in the
former 7 tries. She came
in #2.
shot.

Despite our high school
rivalry, we plan on
playing some doubles
together sometime soon.
I have so much respect
for her, but I knew it was
now or never.
The finals were against
the #1 seed. My mom
was one of my team’s assistant
coaches and was
helping me throughout
each break I had in the
final match.
She was keeping me focused
and kept reminding
me how many points I
now or never and I didn’t
want to leave knowing I
didn’t leave everything
on the court! Being the
Burlington County Scholastic
League Champion
was one of the best moments
of my tennis
career.
I’m so thankful that God
gave me the opportunity
to play in high school
and finish with an amazing
result!
I left my high school tennis
season with 53 wins,
a two time Burlington
had left to win the match.
County
Scholastic
It definitely worked! I always
seemed to play better
and come out with
some spectacular wins
in this tournaments than
I do the regular season,
League All-Star, a two
time All Group player,
and any team player
knows that the most
special award is being a
team MVP and I got to be
but this day I knew it was

that for my team not only
junior year, but back to
back in my senior year as
well.
I had so many special
memories and I hope I
wore the colors well, and
left a legacy for all the
players behind me.
But now I’m ready for my
new chapter and new
memories.
I recently signed a letter
of intent to play for Mercer
County College. It
seemed the perfect fit. I
really like my new head
coach and my personal
coach Jason Ciaccio
played for him as well. I
don’t know what my path
is yet so a bigger school
didn’t make sense.
I also wasn’t ready to go
far away. Even though it’s
a community college we
will play on a D1 level so
I will definitely have challenges.
And that is also
really exciting.

don’t blame your
EQUIPMENT
Blaming your equipment for your failures,
is what lazy undisciplined players
do. They blame everything and
everyone but themselves. The truth
is, many people made it to the pros,
without ever having the proper equipment.
Players who blame and complain,
need to blame their effort.

Never think the match is over, until
the last point is over. It doesn’t
matter if you’re winning or losing,
don’t ever let up until it’s finally
over. There have been many players
who were up 5-0, 40-0 in the
last set, who came back and lost,
because their opponent never let
up, and they did, because they
tought they had the match won.
