2020 is here at last!
When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, most of us will surely have included
something in regards to improving our health - exercise more, or eat less crap, or
include more greens in our daily diet, etc. Where are you heading, healthwise? We
hope this is the year that changes happen for you, especially if you’ve been
procrastinating on improving your wellness status all this time. It really isn’t all that
complicated. The human body (that’s you and me), needs to be well-nourished and
active. It also yearns to be stress-free (mentally and physically) to function at its
best. This year, if you just keep coming back to these two truths and reminding
yourself each day that amidst everything else, “I have to take care of my body’s
needs”, you will feel and look a whole lot better - but you’ll have to start sometime
- preferably on a Monday, for as our very own fitness influencer Joanna said once, “
Start your Monday right to set the way for the rest of the week.” Great advice, we
say!
Firstly, you’ll have to come to terms that if you ignore your health, it will in turn fail
you - no two ways about it. Just like an abused child, one day your body will break
and either give up or turn against you. Either way, it spells disaster for you (and not
to mention your loved ones!). Health, as has been proven time and again, is one’s
true wealth, for without it, we are nothing!
We have in this issue a lovely lineup of articles just for you. Also, don’t forget to
check out our winning brands for our Readers’ Choice Awards!
We at Natural Health wish you a healthy and hence, wealthy New Year. Much love
from me to you too!
Much love
Cindy

HONEY,
Your Skin
Looks Great!
As a natural beauty potion that dates back to more than
4000 years, honey is recognised by skin experts worldwide
as an effective way to beautify the skin. It is loaded with
antioxidants and has antibacterial as well as skin-healing
properties, and is also known to help keep bacterial and
fungal infections away. It’s no wonder that honey is a
favourite active ingredient in countless skincare products
today! Did you know however that you can enjoy its benefits,
in its pure form, at home?
Here are a few DIY procedures involving the use of pure
honey, which will help give you that lovely, heart-stopping
glow!
BRIGHTEN UP AN OVER-
TANNED COMPLEXION:
TEAM UP WITH
TOMATO JUICE OR A
HALVED LEMON!
By mixing a teaspoon of raw honey with the
juice of one small tomato, you’ll have a remedy
for reducing the effects of over-tanning and
brighten your skin in one go! Try massaging the
mixture into the skin for a minute or two before
rinsing it off with cool water. Another way to get
the same result is by applying a teaspoon of raw
honey onto a halved lemon and rubbing it all
over the affected area, till you have a mixture of
lemon juice, lemon sacs and honey all over it.
Let it sit for five minute and rinse off with cool
water. Either way you choose to go, finish it off
with a good moisturiser.

NATURAL & Beauty
MAKE YOUR OWN:
NATURAL EXFOLIATOR
Yes, we’ve all seen rows and rows of skin exfoliators in the
pharmacies and beauty stores, and we’re not saying they
won’t do a good job, but if you had to choose between a
natural product and an artificial one, which would you pick?
We’re guessing it’s going to be the latter! Honey happens to
be a brilliant way to exfoliate away dead skin cells, leaving
behind a simply brighter complexion. Here’s what you’ll need
to do: Mix a tablespoon of honey with one tablespoon of
baking soda until it becomes a paste. Splash your skin with
water, and then gently rub the paste on your face and neck
in a circular motion. Rinse and splash with cool water to finish
it off, followed by the rest of your beauty regime, i.e. toning,
moisturising, etc. Your complexion will be seeing brighter,
smoother days ahead, that’s for sure.
+
HYDRATE YOUR SKIN LIKE
NEVER BEFORE:
RAW HONEY MASK
All you need is a
tablespoon of pure,
raw honey to deeply
hydrate your skin
and quench its thirst
for moisture! Use
your finger to spread
it evenly all over
your face and neck,
and leave it on for
about 20 minutes.
Rinse it off with
room temperature
water, followed by a
splash of cool water
to close off your
pores. You can
proceed with your
toning and
moisturising after
that. Do this at least
twice a week for
best results!
TEAM UP WITH ALOE AND…
TAME A SUNBURN
Here’s a fact: Honey has been known throughout the
centuries as a natural way to treat burns, for it has properties
that fight inflammation and promotes faster healing. Apart
from that, it also effectively calms damaged tissues and prep
them up for natural healing. Hence, it’s as a remedy for
sunburns, or for after-sun use in general.
For using honey on sunburns: Mix one part raw honey with
two parts pure aloe vera gel (scraped from a fresh leaf).
Apply onto the affected area, and leave for 20 minutes. Rinse
off clean with cool water, and finish off with a good skin lotion
to seal in the moisture. Repeat the procedure again the next
day if necessary.
LIGHTEN UNSIGHTLY SCARS:
PAIR UP WITH OLIVE OIL
As basic as it is as an ingredient, honey hides a whole lot of
skin-beautifying powers in its natural makeup which are all
just ready to do their magic on your skin! . It is an effective
moisturiser as well as a natural antiseptic which keeps your
skin soft and healthy. It is also naturally anti-inflammatory
and rich in antioxidants - a helpful combination when you are
trying to deal with unsightly scars. Try this: Mix one teaspoon
of raw honey with one teaspoon of good quality olive oil and
massage onto the affected area using your fingertips. Leave
on for 10 minutes and rinse off. Moisturise if needed. You can
do this up to three times a week if you are serious about
dealing with unwanted scars.

BEAUTY GOALS 2020
FEEL FABULOUS INSIDE AND OUT!
What would your answer be if you were asked to name a beautiful person? It’s not surprising
if Miss South Africa comes to mind, seeing that she’s the newly-crown Miss Universe. Or,
perhaps you already have someone you know who fits your criteria of beautiful. As much as
we know that beauty is subjective, it’s still something we want for ourselves, and no one can
deny that. So, what’s it going to take for us to look and feel our most beautiful selves for
2020? Let’s find out!
4 Natural Health * January 2020 VOL 111
NATURAL & Beauty
A new hairdo, a
toned body,
trendy makeup
and
fashionable
clothes - these
seem like the
perfect
combination
for dialing up
our beauty
points, but are
they the only
things that will
do the trick?
While there’s
no mistaking
the fact that
they matter,
they’re not
nearly enough
if you’re
looking to
score lasting,
true beauty.
Feeling
beautiful from
the inside is,
we assure you,
even more
important
compared to
anything
money can buy
for if you do
not feel
attractive
inside, nothing
can make you
feel otherwise
outside. So,
before we work
on the hair,
skin, makeup
and clothes,
let’s see what
we have to
clean up in the
inside, to make
all these outer
qualities shine
brighter!
WAKE UP
THE
INNER
BEAUTY
IN YOU
Everyone is beautiful, but
some of us just don’t feel
beautiful because in the
inside, we’re just not there
yet in our thoughts and
emotions. We do and say
things that sabotage our
own inner beauty and
wonder why we don’t feel
attractive enough for
others to take notice.
Sometimes, to feel really
beautiful, all it takes is to
start doing things that
make you feel good about
yourself! Here are some
points to take into
consideration:
Be yourself. Nothing comes
close to your own authentic
self no matter where you
go and who you’re with.
Unless of course if your
authentic self happens to
be loud, rude, intimidating,
etc, in which case, it will be
in your best interest to work
on those traits.
Otherwise, let your true self
shine through, in your
words and actions. Resist
trying to fit into molds that
do not allow you to be
yourself - which means that
if you really have to, you
might have to rethink the
company you keep,
especially if they keep
trying to make you do or
say things that just don’t
feel comfortable or natural
to you. Looking your best
on the outside has a lot to
do with all of the above. So,
if you feel that you have not
been looking great during
the past year, it’s time to
make some changes here.
LET GO OF
ALL THAT
BOTHERS YOU
There are always going to
be people or instances in
your life who of which do
not make you feel beautiful:
let them go, or simply, do
not let them bother you.
This is easier said than
done, but the more you are
aware to do so, the easier it
will be for you to ignore
certain people and
unwanted feelings and get
to that place in your life, or
rather, that level of mindset
that you are simply
beautiful and nothing can
change that.
GIVE
GENEROUSLY
It is important to remember
that wealth is not a
prerequisite to being
generous. Generosity lies in
the simplest things, favors,
or kind words that you can
give to another person. As
you already know how this
works, and what you’d
appreciate from people
around you, try making
others feel truly beautiful,
and that energy will bounce
back to you.
THE POWER OF
RELATIONSHIPS
As humans, we are all in
need of other humans’s
support and love, Hence,
the more positive energy
that we surround ourselves
with, the more beautiful our
lives are and yes, the more
beautiful we tend to feel
too. A strong support
system will be there to pick
you up when you are down
and remind you how
amazing you are.
YOUR
COMMUNITY
When you are an
important and relevant
part of something, it brings
out the beautiful feeling of
being appreciated and
needed - which are key
factors of feeling beautiful
inside. Volunteer,
contribute, and get
involved in your
community or an
organization that you feel
passionate about.When
you use your skills and
abilities to help others, it
brings about a feeling of
inner beauty that is truly
gratifying.

NATURAL & Beauty
OUTER
BEAUTY
It’s your right to feel
beautiful, and you know
what, that right extends to
looking beautiful too. While
it’s a good thing to always
keep in mind that beauty is
subjective, and that
everyone is beautiful in
their own way, there are
steps you can take to let
your own unique beauty
shine through.
A HEALTHY
BODY
One of the first things you
will notice about a person is
their body and overall
physique. This cannot
happen unless you take
good care of yourself, for
without good health, it’s
quite impossible to enjoy
the key elements of outer
beauty, such as beautiful
skin, or lustrous hair.
Remember, you are what
you eat, so eat healthfully.
Eating nutritious, balanced
meals which include lots of
fruits and vegetables, and
drinking enough water with
ensure you stay healthy
from the inside, so that the
outside can be maintained
in terms of its good looks.
Home-cooked meals are
always your best bet, but if
you do have to eat out,
make an effort to pick and
choose your meals
properly to include the
highest nutritional value
possible. Tip: Salads and
fruits should be a must
when you eat out.
MOVE YOUR
BODY
In addition to eating
healthy, you should know
that regular helps with your
outer beauty too, for it
helps with your blood
circulation, bringing all the
nutrients from the food you
eat to the skin. Forget
images of ridiculously
ripped women on
Instagram, with muscles
protruding everywhere
- unless of course that’s
truly what you want for
yourself in terms of body
beauty. Partake in exercises
that will help you maintain
a healthy weight and keep
you in great shape. Keep fit
with at least 20-30 minutes
of varied exercises each day
- that’s the key to looking
great and feeling beautiful.
PAY
ATTENTION TO
YOUR SKIN
HEALTH
Your skin is your most
priceless accessory - and it’s
a lifelong one too. Treat it
with love in terms of
nutrition and tender loving
care (TLC). Moisturise your
skin from top to bottom
each day to maintain its
elasticity and health, and to
keep it strong. Beautiful skin
will result in you feeling
beautiful, without fail.
NEVER
NEGLECT SUN
PROTECTION
Sun damage is not
beautiful, to say the least.
No matter how much you
desire a tan, remember the
over-exposure to the
harmful UV rays of the sun
can do more harm than
good to you. Use a good
sunscreen whenever you’re
outdoors and try to stay in
the shade for as much as
possible, especially during
the hottest times of the day.
6 Natural Health * January 2020 VOL 111
NATURAL & Beauty
DRINK
ENOUGH
WATER
Dehydration dries out your
skin and hence, is no friend
of beauty, so drink up. Try
not to wait till you’re thirsty,
for thirst is an early sign of
dehydration. Drink a small
glass of water every hour as
a habit and you’ll be
adequately hydrated always.
HAVE AN
EFFECTIVE
SKINCARE
ROUTINE
Find out what your skin type
is and establish a beauty
routine that works for it.
When you use the right
products for your skin type,
your efforts in washing,
toning and moisturising will
rap much better results.
Remember, something that
works for your friend or
family member might not
necessarily work for , so if
you must, seek the advice of
a good beauty therapist for
what works best for your
skin type. Note: Your beauty
regime should include your
lips (exfoliate, moisturise)
and neck (cleanse, tone,
moisturise).
HYGIENE
Looking dirty and smelling
funky isn’t exactly beautiful,
is it? It will be hard to feel
good about yourself when
you’re not properly
groomed and well-kept. So,
no matter how tough the
going gets, squeeze in a
shower somehow,
someway, and don’t forget
your deodorant too.
YOUR NAILS
SAY A LOT
Make sure the parts of your
body (ie: your hands and
feet), that are easily visible,
remain well-kept. A simple
pedicure or a manicure can
be an easy way to feel
beautiful for a small price.
HOW DO YOU
KEEP YOUR
HAIR?
Hair is a defining feature
that can help shape your
face and features if you
know how to work it
correctly. Choose a
hairstyle that is flattering for
you - which means that
copying a style of a
celebrity may not be the
best thing for your own
face. If you’re the busy type
with a hectic schedule,
choose a hairstyle that is
low-maintenance, so you
can look good with the
least effort!
Sidebar: Smile, you pretty
thing!
Your smile can be one of
your best features, and it is
important to remember to
smile even if you might not
be feeling your best. As
such, remember to brush
your teeth and floss on a
daily basis. Investing in
teeth whitening kits can be
a good idea if your teeth
stain easily.
Wardrobe
COMFORT & STYLE
Fashion trends are fickle and they change all the
time, so while there’s no harm is keeping up to
date with some of them, it’s definitely not practical
to follow them religiously. Firstly, know that the key
to feeling beautiful in your clothes is to choose a
style and wardrobe that is comfortable for you and
suits your style and body-type. Experiment with
different styles by all means, but keep in mind that
if you aren’t comfortable, you’ll less likely feel
beautiful in your clothes.
MAKEUP
So, when it comes to makeup, are you an Alicia
(Keys) or Christina (Aquilera)? If you happen to be
akin to the former, then good for you. Our advice is
to pay extra attention to your skin health for it’s out
there, bare and open. If you do wear makeup, then
remember to aim for a touch of class, and resist
overdoing it. One more thing: Be sure to remove
every scrap of makeup from your face before you
go to bed at night.
If feeling beautiful has always been a struggle for
you, we hope all the tips above will be of help to
you. Try them, and you’ll be in tune with your inner
and outer beauty in no time!

The Humble Lentil Is Not So
Humble In Nutrition
Lentils may not be everyone’s idea of a tasty meal, and let’s face it, they’re neither fancy nor
exciting to look at. However plain they may seem to be, lentils are a powerhouse of nutrition and
have loads of health benefits tied to them. While Asians are no strangers to lentils, (commonly
known to us as dhal), they are actually consumed in many other parts of the world where some
communities depend on it to survive.
There are many ways to cook and serve lentils - they can be made into curries, added into salads,
made into cakes, etc. Whichever way you look at it, adding lentils into your daily diet is a good
idea for it’s cheap, easily available and versatile! Here are some notable health benefits to expect
from lentils.
1.
Fibre is important for gut health
and lentils are packed with them.
Being so, lentils can also help
lower blood cholesterol, since it helps
prevent your digestive tract from absorbing
the waxy, fat-like substance.
2.
A superb source of folate, a
B-vitamin that helps support
red blood cell formation and
proper nerve functions. Pregnant women
need this nutrient to help prevent
neural tube defects in their babies.
3.
Vegetarians and vegans will be
glad to know that lentils are
just as good as a glass of milk
for their calcium needs. A cup packs
38grams of calcium!
4.
It’s rich in protein, whereby one
cup of lentils will deliver the
same amount of protein as three
ounces of salmon - vegans, rejoice!
5.
A magnesium-rich food - A
cup of lentils has 71 mg of
magnesium (your goal: around
310 to 320 mg per day), per the USDA,
a nutrient that improves blood flow
and oxygen in the body. Low magnesium
levels can make you feel numbness
or tingling, flu-like symptoms, and
can even put you at higher risk for a
seizure or heart issues.
6.
Lentils are the cheapest source
of non-heme iron. Iron is essential
to help pump oxygen
throughout your body and prevent
iron-deficient anemia.
7.
Polyphenols for protection -
Polyphenols is protects the body
from ultraviolet rays, radiation,
osteoporosis, heart disease, etc, and
lentils are rich in the compound!

Nectarine
The nectarine fruit is a variety of the peach tree. The botanical name of the nectarine is P. persica
var. nucipersica while the botanical name of the peach is P. persica. Nectarines and peaches are
similar in appearance and colour as they differ only by a single gene, the gene for skin texture.
Peaches are fuzzy and dull, while nectarines are shiny and smooth. Nectarines, like peaches,
probably originated in China over 2,000 years ago and were cultivated in ancient Persia, Greece
and Rome. The word 'nectarine' means sweet as nectar, and this is very likely the obvious origin of
the name.

MAL19987061T
For The Antioxidants Your Body Needs
Modern lifestyles have seen countless people fall ill due to the oxidative stress that their body cells are put
through, caused by poor diets, lack of exercise, physical and mental stress, smoking, overexposure to radiation
from computers, etc. No matter how well we try to take care of ourselves, it is not easy to meet up with all the
requirements of a healthy body. Wellous BIO-GRAPE Seed Extract Tablet was created to help individuals to
stay healthy by increasing their antioxidant intake. Daily antioxidant intake is crucial for overall unkeeping of our
health as well as for keeping diseases at bay, but unfortunately, a typical daily diet in our society is not likely to
provide enough of these nutrients. Grape seed extract is rich in antioxidants which include a high concentration
of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC), as well as other antioxidants such as phenolic acids, and flavonoids.
OPC is an antioxidant which is 20 and 50 times more stronger than vitamin C and E. These antioxidants are
useful in preventing health issues linked to oxidative stress. High in antioxidants, Wellous BIO-GRAPE Seed
Extract Tablet helps to fight free radicals that not only cause serious health issues, but also cause premature
aging, which also makes it a good supplement as well.

inhaled into their bodies, and they have every right to be wary, for most car air fresheners in the market tend to
contain a myriad of health deteriorating chemicals in them. All but one, and that is, Vanzo, an upcoming name
in car air fresheners. Using only safe and natural plant-based products, the Vanzo series of car air fresheners
are SGS Certified to contain no harmful chemical substances, and is the first in Malaysia to be COA Certified to
contain no alcohol substances. All Vanzo car air fresheners are made using ingredients supplied from two of
the top names in Japan, Ogawa and Taiyo, with a collective experience of 125 years in the automotive fragrance
industry. Vanzo is so effective in eliminating odours and freshen up the air in closed spaces that it can be used
not only in cars but also in offices, bathrooms, studies, offices and anywhere else where the air needs to be
deodorised. Vanzo has a suitable scent for every taste - from mellow to intense and is stylish in design too. It is
truly this generation’s top choice among the health conscious and quality-savvy.

3 EFFECTIVE
WAYS TO
CONTROL YOUR
SUGAR INTAKE
There’s no denying that as a nation, we seem to
be plagued by diabetes, with numbers of affected
individuals rising, almost out of control. Being
overweight or obesed places us at a much higher risk
for debilitating diseases, and what’s alarming is, one
out of every two of us Malaysians aged 18 and above
appear to be so - either overweight or obesed. (1)
While there may be many factors contributing to this
starting reality, our high intake of sugar is definitely
one of the main ones.
Cutting down on our sugar intake is especially difficult for us, probably because
we live in a land of plenty. Plenty of tasty, sugar-laden foods, that is! Most of our
Malaysian favourites, such as mee mamak, cendol, teh tarik, char kuey teow and
nasi lemak to name a few, are either high in sugar or high in carbohydrates, which
convert into sugars in our bodies. It may seem like a hopeless case, especially for
those who love their food, but there are ways to get around it. All it takes is a little
bit of discipline and a good mindset.
In this article, we take a look at how we can cut down our sugar intake, which in
turn will make a significant difference to our health and reduce our chances of
diseases such as diabetes too.

HEALTH & Wellness
1. Start With Your Tea/Coffee
Habits
No, we’re not about to ask you to ditch
them, but rather, start ditching the sugar,
bit by bit. While we know all too well
that for most of us, it’s the sugar that
makes our cuppa taste so good, you’ll
have to take our word for it that this
taste for sweetness can be altered if you
give your body a chance. Acquiring a
taste, after all, does not usually occur
overnight, especially when you’re trying
to get accustomed to something you’re
not used to. But it can happen - you can
get used to, and even learn to love, the
flavour of your favourite beverages with
much less sugar or no sugar at all added
to it!
You’ve got to take the first step though,
so how about starting with your next cup
of tea or coffee? Just use one teaspoon
less sugar than you’d normally do, and
decrease that amount steadily. Before
you know it, you’ll be weaned off sugar
and enjoying your beverage sugar-free!
2. Move Away From
Processed Foods
Take a look into your pantry and
refrigerator, and chances are you’ll find
packets, cans and bottles of foods or
cooking ingredients that contain sugar
as one of its top three ingredients. Keep
in mind that ingredients such as agave
nectar, high fructose corn syrup, sucanat
and molasses also count as sugar. (see
The Many Names Of Sugar)
Other than sugar, processed foods
and ingredients also contain a whole
lot of other additives to make it taste
good and also, to give it a longer shelf
life. Why put them into your body,
when you can, with a bit of effort, cook
your meals from scratch, using fresh
ingredients such as herbs and spices
for flavour and taste? Think about it,
will you? For example, if you’re thinking
of whipping up a dish of spaghetti
Bolognese, there are loads of recipes
for authentic bolognese sauce that you
can look up online, and they contain
only natural, healthy ingredients!
By taking initiatives with your everyday
meals, you’ll be seeing food through
a whole new perspective and enjoying
better health too.
3. Love Fruit? Eat It,
Don’t Juice It
On one hand we have loads of dietary
advice prompting you to eat fruits on
a daily basis. After all, fruits are rich
in essential vitamins needed for our
good health. The problem is when you
misunderstand that advice and assume
that fruit juice is just as good as the fruit
itself, and there’s where you’re wrong.
When you put your fruit through a juicer,
what happens is, you get the juice without
all its pulp. That wouldn’t be an issue if
our bodies didn’t need the pulp for its
fibre. Fibre aids in digestion and to some
extent, prevents over-absorption of sugars
into our bloodstream. Take out the fibre
from the fruit, all those sugars are free to
cause havoc with our health, so to speak!
Fibre keep you feeling satiated for longer
too. Eat a fruit, and it will more likely help
fill you up and keep hunger pangs at bay
for longer. Juicing it however, will not,
and before long, you’ll be hungry again.
According to the nutrition information for
a popular brand of fruit juice, a 610ml cup
of its juice can contain anywhere between
25-85 grams of sugar. This means that
depending on which type of juice you buy,
you will be consuming anywhere between
6.25 and 21.25 teaspoons of sugar, in just
one serving!
So please, take the fruit, the whole fruit,
and not just the juice!
It’s In Your Hands
Nothing comes close to a healthy,
well-functioning body, something
that is impossible to enjoy if we have
diseases such as diabetes plaguing
our lives. Fortunately, you can still take
charge of the situation and either avoid
it completely or lower your chances of
getting it. If you’re serious about making
a difference in your life, take that first
step and watch your health change for
the better!

HEALTH & Wellness
Q & A with Dr Sujana LS Saravanamuttu
Infectious Diseases Physician, Hospital Kuala Lumpur
NH: Is there a limit on how many times a
year that a person can be safely
prescribed antibiotics for his/her ailment?
Dr Sujana: We seem to have started with a complex
question which unfortunately has no straightforward answer!
If enquiring whether there is a measurable point beyond
which antibiotic exposure in a year can lead to adverse
events including antibiotic resistant bacteria, then there isn’t
any limit that can be considered as ‘safe’ .
Conversely if you take a course of antibiotics when it was not
necessary, for example a viral respiratory infection or if the
course was not prescribed by a registered doctor, you would
have put yourself at risk of developing these resistant
bacteria without any corresponding benefit to yourself.
It is important to note that we all have a multitude of bacteria
naturally residing in our bodies, especially in our gut. These
‘good bacteria’ help maintain our bodies’ important
functions, such as digesting the food we consume. When you
are prescribed a certain antibiotic, it will kill the infecting
bacteria it targets, but will also to an extent kill off part of the
‘good bacteria’ population in the same environment. When
this occurs, other bacteria which are resistant to that
antibiotic can be selected out, that is, increase in number to
replace the bacteria which have been killed off. This effect will
not be as significant if the antibiotic used is narrow spectrum,
meaning that it is specific for that particular infecting bacteria
and is used for an appropriate time period.
Problems can arise when the antibiotic used is broad
spectrum, meaning that it will eradicate a much wider range
of bacteria, leading to greater damage to the residual
‘bacteria ecosystem’ and thus increasing the risk of
selecting out more resistant bacteria strains. A similar effect
will occur if the antibiotic is given for a longer rather than
shorter duration, especially if this exceeds the correct
duration of treatment.
Many healthy people are already carrying these resistant
strains in their bodies without knowing it, as simply
harbouring these resistant bacteria does not automatically
make you sick.
However should such people fall ill or undergo surgery, their
body defence systems could be affected, putting them at risk
of developing a resistant bacterial infection.
Thus any antibiotic exposure, warranted or not, will change
the ‘bacteria ecosystem’ in your body. If you are taking a
course of antibiotics for a valid reason, for example an
urinary tract infection and you recover from that infection,
then the benefit of taking that course outweighs the small
risk of increasing the resistant bacteria in your body.
NH: We are often asked to finish a course
of antibiotics prescribed to us. What are
the ramifications of not completing a
course of antibiotics?
Dr Sujana: When your doctor prescribes a course of
antibiotics to you, it is because based on clinical evaluation,
you have a physical ailment due to a particular bacterial
infection. The duration of the course can vary between a few
days and a couple of weeks, but the actual period would
depend on that bacteria and the type of infection it causes.
Concerns arise when the patient fails to complete the course,
such as stopping a 7 day course after only 3 to 4 days. This
may happen because they find it difficult to follow the dosing
schedule or worse still, they stop taking the antibiotics
prematurely because they feel better, and may decide to save
the balance of their pills ‘for next time just in case’! In both
instances this would increase the risk of developing
resistance and hence treatment failure in the future.
54 Natural Health * January 2020 VOL 111
HEALTH & Wellness
NH: How will we know if we need
antibiotics when we’re sick?
Dr Sujana: The simple answer is that you will not know
by yourself! The vast majority of infections that a person will
experience in the community such as the common cold, flu,
sore throat or bronchitis are caused by viruses and thus do
not require antibiotics. You will need to be examined by your
doctor, who will then decide if antibiotic therapy is required
for your ailment.
In addition, some symptoms commonly associated with
infections, such as fever or cough, may be due to other
causes. A persistent fever could be due to conditions causing
an inflammatory state in the body such as connective tissue
disease or cancer, while a chronic cough may be due to
structural lung disease like asthma or fibrosis. If in doubt,
always consult your doctor.
NH: How do antibiotics work in the
body?
Dr Sujana: Antibiotics work by targeting the bacteria
causing infection in the body by different methods. They can
attach themselves to the outer surface of the bacteria or
enter directly into the bacteria, which will either kill the
bacteria or control it by blocking its reproduction. By these
methods, the infection will be successfully treated if the
correct antibiotic is prescribed for the appropriate period of
time and is taken as directed by the patient.
Problems can arise when the patient does not take the
antibiotic following the dosing instructions, or if he/she stops
taking it altogether without informing the doctor. The
bacteria is thus exposed to the antibiotic without being killed
or controlled, which will give it the opportunity to develop
resistance to this antibiotic, which can cause failure of
treatment in the future if the same antibiotic is used again.
NH: Are there any known risks linked to
the use of antibiotics?
Dr Sujana: Like all prescribed medications, antibiotics
can cause side effects in patients using them. For the most
part these are minor and tolerable, such as nausea, stomach
discomfort and diarrhoea and will resolve once the antibiotic
course is completed. A small proportion of patients may find
that these effects persist, which would make it difficult for
them to complete the course. These patients should
reconsult the same doctor who initially treated them (as far
as possible) so that an alternative and better tolerated
antibiotic can be substituted. Even less commonly, a patient
may develop an allergic reaction to the antibiotic (which in
rare cases can become life threatening) or complications
such as hearing loss, kidney damage or liver inflammation.
These uncommon complications can still be reversible if the
patient seeks early medical attention.
NH: Is there any group of people who
should not be prescribed with antibiotics?
Dr Sujana: Antibiotics are generally prescribed for
bacterial infections which if left untreated, could be life
threatening or fatal in some cases. As such infections can
potentially affect everyone in the community, anyone in the
community who develops such an infection should be
treated. However it must be noted that in certain patient
groups, such as pregnant women or those with chronic
kidney disease, the choice of antibiotics will be limited, as the
normal 1st choice antibiotic may cause more harm than
benefit. In these patients, either a safer alternative would be
used (if pregnant) or the antibiotic dosage would be adjusted
(if kidney disease).
Patients who are already aware that they are allergic to a
particular antibiotic or any other type of medication should
always inform their doctor before any new antibiotic is
prescribed. Patients who are already taking medications for
other conditions like diabetes or heart disease should
likewise inform their doctor about this, in order to minimise
the chance of new adverse effects caused by the newly
prescribed antibiotic interacting with their original
medications. Women who are pregnant or who suspect they
could be pregnant should also share this information with
their doctor in advance.
It is important to highlight that antibiotics, when used
correctly, are potentially life saving or limb saving medications.
One should not hesitate to use them if they are prescribed for
a specific bacterial infection that needs treatment.
Natural Health * January 2020 VOL 111
55
HEALTH & Wellness
NH: What is antibiotic resistance and why
should we be more aware about it?
Dr Sujana: Antibiotic resistance refers to the partial or
total failure of an antibiotic to kill or control the bacteria
against which it was originally prescribed. This occurs due to
the survival mechanisms that bacteria develops in order to
protect themselves from the action of antibiotics. These
survival mechanisms are more likely to be triggered if the
antibiotic use was inappropriate, as was noted in question 1.
As a result an antibiotic which could previously successfully
treat a bacterial infection will now fail if the bacteria causing
this infection has developed resistance, as mentioned earlier.
NH: Is there anything a person can do to
help prevent the spread of antibiotic
resistance?
Dr Sujana: The public have an important role to play in
helping to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance, since
most infections would be managed in the community at
either government or private health clinics
Never pressure your doctor into prescribing you antibiotics
for your current ailment, even if you may have received
antibiotics for similar complaints in the past. Your doctor
would have to reassess your condition and make a decision
based on clinical judgment.
If you are prescribed antibiotics, always complete the full
course following the dosing instructions. In the event you
experience side effects and are unable to, or uncertain if you
should complete the course, consult your doctor again as
early as possible.
Never share your prescribed antibiotics with any other
person such as your family members or friends even if their
ailments appear similar to yours. They should always consult
their own doctors instead.
Do not try to buy antibiotics over the counter at pharmacies
without a valid prescription from a registered doctor. Attempting
to do so would be against Malaysian prescribing laws.
This is causing serious concern worldwide for several reasons.
If the commonly used 1st choice antibiotics no longer work
due to resistance, stronger antibiotics would be needed,
which generally need to be given in hospital and for longer
periods, resulting in increased healthcare costs and a higher
rate of more serious adverse effects. Mortality rates would
also be higher in such patients, and there would also be an
increased risk of spread of these resistant bacteria in the
community and hospitals. The situation will only become
worse as development of new antibiotics is an extremely slow
and expensive process and cannot keep up with the rate of
new bacterial resistance, if antibiotics continue to be misused.
NH: How do bacteria become resistant to
antibiotics?
Dr Sujana: Antibiotic resistance occurs naturally and is
selected out when surrounding friendly bacteria are killed,
which can occur with any antibiotic. As I mentioned earlier
but is important to reemphasise, if the antibiotic is
appropriate then this effect will be minimal; magnification of
this effect occurs if too ‘broad spectrum’ antibiotics are used
which will kill off far too many friendly bacteria (which would
be replaced by the resistant bacteria instead) or if the
appropriate antibiotic is taken for a shortened or prolonged
course rather than following the correct treatment duration.
Learn about common infections in the community from your
doctor or local healthcare institution. Alternatively, access
reliable online sources for further information, such as the
websites of the Ministry of Health Malaysia, the Malaysian
Pharmaceutical Society or the World Health Organization
Keep up to date with your vaccines as appropriate for your
age, as they will prevent certain infections and so lead to less
illnesses and potential for antibiotic misuse.
Lastly, remember that prevention is better than cure! Stay
home from work or school if you have an infection to
prevent spreading it to others. Take appropriate measures
such as maintaining a safe distance and proper hand
hygiene when visiting someone with an infection that can
be spread by close contact or coughing/sneezing. Maintain
a healthy lifestyle in terms of your diet, weight and personal
habits, as this will also help reduce the risk of developing
many infections.

Foods that c
an cause
addictive-like
eating
Researchers at the
University of Michigan
studied addictive-like
eating in 518 people.
They used the Yale
Food Addiction Scale
(YFAS) as a reference.
It’s the most
commonly used tool
to assess food
addiction. All
participants received
a list of 35 foods,
both processed and
unprocessed.
The Dangerous 18!
Avoid Getting
Addicted To These
Foods In 2020
It’s not uncommon to have a food addiction or exhibit addictive-like
eating behavior. After all, it’s not difficult to get addicted to foods like
frenc fries, for instance! Obesity may increase the likelihood of food addictions,
especially unhealthy foods. Read on.
Food addiction involves being addicted to food in the same way as
someone with a substance use disorder demonstrates addiction to a
particular substance, such as alcohol, for instance.
People who have food addiction report that they are unable to control
their consumption of certain foods. Or drinks. However, people don’t
seem to become addicted to random foods, but rather, in the majority
of cases, certain foods are much more likely to cause symptoms of addiction,
compared to the rest.
They rated how likely
they were to
experience problems
with each of the 35
foods, on a scale of 1
(not at all addictive)
to 7 (extremely
addictive). In this
study, 7–10% of
participants were
diagnosed with
full-blown food
addiction. In addition,
92% of participants
exhibited addictivelike
eating behavior
toward some food.
They repeatedly had
the desire to quit
eating them but were
unable to do so.
The results below
detail which foods
were the most and
least addictive. The
number following
each food is the
average score given
in the study
mentioned above, on
a scale of 1 (not at all

(single or a blend of oils) into a spray
bottle and fill the rest of the bottle
with water, and shake well. Use as
an invigorating air freshener,
room spray or even as a
body mist!

• Lime
• Sweet, bitter, blood or wild orange
• Grapefruit
• Bergamot
• Tangerine
• Mandarin

Feel Alive With
The Scent Of
CITRUS!
In the world of aromatherapy, it’s not likely to
escape the invigorating scents of citrus essential
oils. They are aptly known as sunshine in
bottles for their ability to uplift and refresh like
no other scents can. The most popular citrus
scents among essential oils users are lemon,
bergamot, orange, lime, tangerine and grapefruit.
Who needs artificial air fresheners when
these natural scents are at hand? Versatile and
effective, they transform the ambience of any
room with their lively aromas.
The Ultimate Mood Booster
Using citrus oils aromatically are a wonderful way to enhance
a person's mood. Feeling worn out or just plain tired, it can
wreak havoc on your emotional health as well. Using citrus
oils can help restore your emotional balance. Just diffuse your
favourite citrus essential oil nearby (or use a personal diffuser
up to your face!) and let it work on your brain's chemicals and
hormones. The results will be an improved mood!
For Mental Alertness
Can’t concentrate on a task? Grab a bottle of your favourite
citrus essential oil and sniff on it. It will help boost your
mental alertness and help you think clearer too. This is why
citrus oils are a popular choice to diffuse in offices, for it helps
people get through the day. Grapefruit seems to work for
many, but you can pick what works best for you.
Soothes And Eases Anxiety
Feeling anxious isn’t something rare, for almost everyone has
to face them at some point of their life or another. Sweetsmelling
citrus oils have been known to show amazing results
in reducing feelings of anxiety and irritability, as well as other
mood disorders. Bergamot and orange essential oil are
also especially effective in these arenas, and can be used to
balance mood and emotions.
Naturally Freshens The Air
Citrus scents effectively remove odors, which is why they
are used in many cleansing products such as laundry
detergents and dish-washing liquids. Hey, they’re even used
in deodorants to combat body odour! For a natural air
freshener though, all you need to do is to add your favourite
essential oil to a spray bottle with water, shake and spritz into
the air. When used in a diffuser, citrus oils can also help clean
the air while deodorising it.

WAYS TO
ORGANISE
YOUR
REFRIGERATOR
FOR WEIGHT
LOSS
Take a close look at what’s in
your fridge right now, for they
could make an impact on your
weight loss efforts. If you’d
care to find out how you can
make the contents of your
fridge work for you, read on!

Weight Loss
Assess The Contents Of
Your Fridge
Food stuff should be sacred, and not
be taken for granted. While we’re
about to advise you to take an
inventory of what’s in your refrigerator,
and start your assessment with tossing
expired items, we’d also like to remind
you to think twice before making
future purchases that will only end up
being tossed out. It’s never a good
idea to waste food, even sauces and
condiments. Next, neaten up the
contents of your fridge. A cluttered
fridge can be overwhelming and an
impediment to seeing and pulling out
healthy foods.
Pile Up On Greens
Not one fridge should go without a
good stock of green vegetables. Some
great choices to have at hand are
romaine or spinach, Swiss chard, bok
choy, and arugula. Buy pre-washed to
save time, or wash and pack
immediately after returning from the
store or farmer’s market. Healthy and
wholesome toppings for your salads ae
well as for your breakfasts, such as
walnuts, sunflower seeds, dried fruit, or
flavorful cheeses will add texture,
flavor, and nutrients to your diet, so
stock tem up in your fridge too.
Mason Jars For Quick And
Easy Access
Mason jars are awesome! You can
prepare overnight breakfasts grains
(yogurt, milk, honey, fresh fruits and
grains), or even prepare healthy salads
to-go in them. Not only do these
foods keep well for a few days at least,
but best of all, you can see what’s in
each jar! Fill them up and ensure
they’re tightly closed, and arrange
them in your fridge for a visual appeal.
Who says eating healthy needs to be
boring?
Keep Colorful, Healthy
Choices Easily Accessible
For your weight loss efforts to be a
success, you’ll have to make healthier
snack choices. So, do away with
unhealthy snacks such as puddings,
canned fruits in heavy syrup, cakes, etc,
and stock up on cut carrots, cherry
tomatoes, sliced capsicums, celery
sticks, etc. Pop them in mason jars so
that they’ll catch your eye whenever
you open your fridge. They’re a good
reminder of your weight loss goals and
the fact that they’re ready to eat will
make them more appealing too.
Create Ready-To-Eat Bento
Boxes For Healthier Meals
If time is constantly an issue for you,
make it a habit to set a day aside for
food prepping so that you’ll stay on
track on your weight loss journey.
Create your own veggie-rich bento
boxes and just grab them for a
nutrients-packed meal. Look up
healthy recipes for pre-made bento
boxes online and modify according to
your own needs or preferences.
Remember that when you’re trying to
lose weight, staying inspired is crucial,
for it’s all too easy to lose interest,
especially when it comes to food
choices.

Weight Loss
Be Condiment-Savvy
Condiments can be a tricky one when
it comes to losing weight, especially if
you love to flavour your food. Instead
of the sugar-laden soy sauces and
other usual culprits, try stocking your
fridge with a variety of mustards,
salsas, and other low-sugar, lowsodium
condiments that still deliver
bold flavor. Start making your own
salad dressing as well! Here’s one to
try: Mix olive oil and balsamic vinegar
in a bowl, and add in some nutritional
yeast flakes or powder - you’ll have a
salad dressing that’s fool-proof in
flavour, and it keeps you madly in love
with your greens!
Stock Up On Healthy
Thirst-Quenchers
We understand that on hot days, you’d
naturally crave sweet, cold drinks
during your afternoon energy slump,
but grabbing a bottle of soda or a
sugar-filled beverage from the fridge
can sabotage your weight-loss efforts.
Stock your fridge with healthy thirstquenching
beverages like filtered
water, flavored seltzer water, or
unsweetened brewed iced tea. Staying
hydrated is an excellent idea, always,
but ensure you’re doing it right!
What’s Freezing?
Even the contents of your freezer
should be working to support your
weight-loss goals. Hence, if there is
always ice cream and frozen pizzas
available to you, no matter how good
your intentions are to lose weight, you
are effectively sabotaging yourself each
time you open up your freezer. Replace
ice cream with frozen fruit. Try this: Mix
in a single-serve cup of yogurt with
some frozen berries - delicious!
For even better weight loss results,
frozen vegetables should also be an
integral part of your freezer’s
inventory. There are so many different
frozen vegetable medleys in your
grocery store freezer section that will
keep your veggie options diverse. They
are easy to prepare too: Just toss them
in your stir-fries or soups for a healthy,
nutritious touch!
Make The Health Stuff
Look Appealing And Easy
To Grab!
Here’s where a little planning and prep
work can go a long way in avoiding
temptation. Although you may have
the best intentions when you stock up
with fresh fruits and vegetables, which
are low in calories and filling, they may
be overlooked if they are either out of
sight or are too time consuming to
prepare. So, try taking them out of the
bottom drawers and feature them—
pre-cut and packaged in individual
serving containers, in the middle of the
fridge. This way, they appear more
attractive and you’ll be more inclined
to grab them!

Fingers & Toes
Your nail health matters,
and here’s why!
Our fingernails as well as toenails may seem insignificant, but they do play
a few good roles in our lives. Their main function of our nails is to shield the
fingertip as well as the tips of our toes from injuries. Our fingernails also
help to make our fingertips more sensitive and aware of any contact towards
them. They also help with scraping and digging while also being an extended
precision grip for our fingers. Plus, can you imagine what it would be like if
you had an itch and had no nails to deal with it? Read on.
64 Natural Health * January 2020 VOL 111
PREVENTION & Remedies
ABOUT YOUR NAILS
Our nails are made of a translucent protein called keratin,
which also makes up our hair. The long, hard part of the nail
(which we love to colour with nail polish!) is called the nail
plate. Its shape is determined by the form of the underlying
bone. There are actually layers of dead, compacted cells on
top of each other - and in their healthy state, they are strong
and rigid, yet somewhat flexible.
You may or may not have given this much thought, but your
nails need to be taken care of. Well, it’s actually safe to say at
this point that most people do not give much thought to thier
nail health until something really bad happens like a painful
infecton, or if it breaks and injures their fingernail bed, etc.
Why wait for such things to happen when you can prevent
them by taking good care of your nails every day - and it’s not
even that complicated to do so!
Firstly, take a look at your fingernails now to ascertain their
present condition. Do they look healthy and strong to you?
Are there any ridges, dents, or areas of unusual color or shape
present? Many nail issues can be addressed via proper nail
care, so let’s see what we’re dealing with, shall we?
If You Love
Manicures And Pedicures
,,
If you rely on manicures or pedicures for
healthy-looking nails, keep a few things in
mind.
,,
Stick to salons that display a current license
and certificates, and ensure their manicurists
are lisenced too.
,,
No matter what the prcedure calls for, avoid
having your cuticles removed — they act to
seal the skin to the nail plate, so removal can
lead to nail infection.
,,
Ensure that all tools at the salon are sterilised
to prevent the spread of infection.
,,
Enquire as to how the foot baths are cleaned.
Ideally, a bleach solution is used between
clients and the filters are cleaned regularly.
What’s Normal In Healthy Nails
Your fingernails grow from the area at the base of the nail
under your cuticle. Healthy fingernails are smooth, without pits
or grooves. They're even-coloured and relatively smooth and
free of spots or discoloration. Sometimes though, your nails
may develop harmless vertical ridges that run from the cuticle
to the tip of the nail. Vertical ridges tend to become more
prominent with age. Your nails, especially fingernails, can also
develop white lines or spots due to injury, but these eventually
grow out with the nail.

FINGERNAIL CARE:
WHAT’S GOOD TO DO
If you havent’s thought about nail care before, it’s high time
you did. But first, it will be a good idea to know what’s good
for your nails and what’s not. So, here are some tips for you.
• Keep fingernails dry and clean: This prevents bacteria
from growing under your fingernails. Repeated or
prolonged contact with water can contribute to split
fingernails. Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves when
washing dishes, cleaning or using harsh chemicals.
• Practice good nail hygiene. When clipping your nails, use
a sharp nail clipper or scissors. Never use a broken or
blunt clipper, for it is likely to cause unwanted nail
problems such as uneven cut, or you may end up tugging
at your nail. Trim your nails straight across, then round
the tips in a gentle curve.
• Moisturise your nails as a habit. When you use hand lotion,
rub the lotion into your fingernails and cuticles, too, just as
you would the skin of your hands. Regular moisturising will
help keep your nails healthier and stronger.
• Apply a protective layer. This is important, especially if
you have weak or brittle nails that break easily. Applying
a nail hardener will help strengthen your nails.
• Take a biotin supplement. Ask your doctor about biotin
supplements if you hapen to have weak or unhealthy
nails. Some research suggests that they may help
strengthen weak or brittle fingernails.
FINGERNAIL CARE:
DON'TS
When it comes to nail care, there may be some things,
such as habits for instance, that seem harmless but they
actually harm your nails. To prevent nail damage, note the
following facts.:
• Stop biting your fingernails or picking at your cuticles.
These habits can damage the nail bed. Even a minor cut
alongside your fingernail can allow bacteria or fungi to
enter and cause an infection.
• Resist pulling off hangnails. You might rip live tissue along
with the hangnail, causing a lot of unneccesary pain and
injury in the area. Remeber too, that any injuries in your
nail is not easy to address as it tends to get wet often
with housework, ect. If you have a hangnail, carefully clip
it off .
• Avoid harsh nail care products. If your nails look less
than healthy in the first place, try laying off nail polish,
hence removing the need to use polish remover too. If
you do need to remove your nail polish, opt for an
acetone-free formula.
• Never neglect nail issues. If you have a nail problem that
doesn't seem to go away on its own or is associated with
other signs and symptoms, consult your doctor or
dermatologist for an evaluation.
Consult Your Doctor Or
Dermatologist If You Notice:
• Changes in nail color, such as discoloration of the entire
nail or a dark streak under the nail
• Changes in nail shape, such as curled nails
• Thinning or thickening of the nails
• Separation of the nail from the surrounding skin
• Bleeding around the nails
• Swelling or pain around the nails
• Failure of nails to grow out

Some things
nurses wish
YOU knew!
Nurses are amazing human beings and they sacrifice so much of their time to care for
others in need. Did you know, however, that as angelic as they seem to be towards us at the
hospitals, they too have their fair share of struggles and also, there are many things nurses
wish we knew! Here are some of them.

NEW AGE + Beyond
1. You really shouldn’t
have waited this long
I’d never tell a patient that he was
stupid for waiting a week for his
stroke symptoms to improve
before coming to the hospital.
Although I’d like to. Especially if
his wife then complains that we’re
not doing anything for the guy.
— A longtime nurse who blogs at
head-nurse.blogspot.com
2. Please don’t lie about
your pain
If you’re happily texting and
laughing with your friends until
the second you spot me walking
into your room, I’m not going to
believe that your pain is a ten out
of ten. —A nurse in New York City.
3. Your life may be
literally in our hands,
you know
We question physicians’ orders
more often than you might think.
Some of the mistakes I’ve headed
off: a physician who forgot to
order a medication that the
patient was taking at home, a
doctor who ordered the incorrect
diet for a diabetic, and one who
tried to perform a treatment on
the wrong patient. —A nurse from
Pennsylvania
4. The one thing you
should never say to me
“You’re too smart to be a nurse.''
I went to nursing school because
I wanted to be a nurse, not
because I wanted to be a doctor
and didn’t make it.” —A longtime
nurse in Texas
5. Don’t leave out
anything when the
doctor asks you what
meds you took
When your provider asks for a list
of the medications you’re taking,
make sure you include over-thecounter
drugs and herbals. People
think that if an herb is ‘all natural’
and ‘organic,’ it’s not a medication.
But that’s not true. Herbals can
interact with other medications
and can cause serious
complications. —Kristin Baird, RN,
president and CEO of the Baird
Group in Fort Atkinson, WI
6. Stop asking me about
your test results
If you ask me if your biopsy
results have come back yet, I may
say no even if they have, because
the doctor is really the best
person to tell you. He can answer
all your questions.— Gina, a
longtime nurse.
7. A positive note from
you can go a long way
If you have a really great nurse, a
note to her nurse manager that
says ‘So-and-so was exceptional
for this reason’ will go a long
way. Those things come out in
her evaluation—it’s huge. —Linda
Bell, RN
8. We still believe in
miracles
I once took care of a child who
had been in a coma for more than
a week. The odds that he would
wake up were declining, but I had
read that the sense of smell was
the last thing to go. So I told his
mom, ‘Put your perfume on a
diaper and hold it up by his nose
to see if it will trigger something.’
The child woke up three hours
later. It was probably a
coincidence, but it was one of my
best moments as a nurse. —Barb
Dehn, RN, NP, a nurse practitioner
in Silicon Valley, CA who blogs at
nursebarb.com.

9. It’s a demanding
occupation
Some jobs are physically
demanding. Some are mentally
demanding. Some are emotionally
demanding. Nursing is all three. If
you have a problem with a nurse
or with your care, ask to speak to
the charge nurse [the one who
oversees the shift]. If it isn’t
resolved at that level, ask for the
hospital supervisor.—Nancy
Brown, RN, a longtime nurse in
Seattle, WA
10. Nurses shouldn’t miss
your vein
If the person drawing your blood
misses your vein the first time, ask
for someone else. I’ve seen one
person stick someone three times.
They need to practice, but it
shouldn’t be on you! —Karon
White Gibson, RN, producer-host
of Outspoken with Karon, a
Chicago cable TV show.
11. Don’t let your pain get
out of control
Using a scale of zero to ten, with
ten being the worst pain you can
imagine, start asking for
medication when your pain gets
to a four. If you let it get really
bad, it’s more difficult to get it
under control. —Nancy Beck, RN,
a nurse at a Missouri hospital.
12. Don’t hold your breath
before a painful
procedure
Don’t hold your breath when you
know we’re about to do
something painful, like remove a
tube or take the staples out of an
incision. Doing that will just make
it worse. Take a few deep breaths
instead. —Mary Pat Aust, RN.
13. Ask anyone who comes
into your room if
they’ve washed their
hands
There are staff at every hospital
who just don’t think that they
need to wash their hands between
seeing patients. Others get
distracted and forget. So always
ask anyone who comes into your
room, ‘Have you washed your
hands? —Kathy Stephens
Williams, RN.
14. Please give physical
affection to dying
loved ones
When you’re with someone who is
dying, try to get in bed and
snuggle with them. Often they
feel very alone and just want to be
touched. Many times my patients
will tell me, ‘I’m living with cancer
but dying from lack of affection.
—Barb Dehn, RN, NP.
15. We save as many
patients as doctors do!
We’re the ones keeping an eye on
your electrolytes, your fluids,
whether you’re running a fever.
We’re often the ones who decide
whether you need a feeding tube
Natural Health * January 2020 VOL 111

or a central line for your IV. And
we’re the ones who yell and screech
when something goes wrong.” —A
longtime nurse in Texas.
16. If you do not
understand what the
doctor is telling you,
say so!
I once heard a doctor telling his
patient that the tumor was
benign, and the patient thought
that benign meant that he had
cancer. That patient was my dad.
It was one of the things that
inspired me to become a nurse.”
—Theresa Tomeo, RN, a former
nurse at the Beth Abraham Center
for Nursing and Rehabilitation in
Queens, NY.
17. Know when to draw the
line
I had one patient show up
repeatedly to see me after he was
discharged. Another little old man
tried to pull me into bed with him.
(He was stronger than he looked.)
The general rule is don’t ask us on
a date. We’re busy. It’s unethical.
And, really, I already know you
better than I want to. — A
longtime nurse in Texas
18. Doctors don’t
neccasarily talk to ech
other
You might think that all the
doctors who see you talk to each
other, but they often don’t. That’s
a problem because physicians
sometimes disagree. The more
you can keep track of different
doctors’ opinions—and
communicate them—the better
off you’ll be. –A nurse in
Pennsylvania
19. If you are (truly) in
pain, tell us!
For some reason, when I ask ‘Are
you having pain?’ a lot of patients
say no, even if they are. But I’ve
found that if I say, ‘Are you
uncomfortable?’ people are much
more likely to say yes. Please tell
us if you’re in pain. We have all
sorts of medications we can use to
help you. –Mary Pat Aust, RN.
20. Your vitals are
important
We know you hate being woken
up, but we have to check your
vital signs every four hours. It’s
not the Hilton, it’s a hospital. And
that’s hospital policy. –A nurse in
St. Petersburg, FL
21. Bother your nurse!
My biggest piece of advice: Bother
the nurse. When I come upon
patients who are in a lot of pain,
I’ll ask, ‘Why didn’t you ask the
nurse for your pain medication?’
and they say, ‘She looked so busy.
I didn’t want to bother her.’ Please,
‘bother’ your nurse. She can’t help
you if she doesn’t know what you
need. –Nurse supervisor at a New
Jersey hospital
22. Let us know about your
family
If you think your family member is
confused, let us know. That tells us
we should move them closer to
the nurses’ desk and check in on
them more frequently. We’ll also
attach an alarm to their gown so
we know if they’re getting up
without assistance. –Nancy Beck,
RN, a nurse at a Missouri hospital
23. Keep your sick loved
one’s comfort in mind
When it comes to very elderly
patients, sometimes family
members who are afraid of seeing
Mom or Dad go will want us to
run a lot of tests or do a major
surgery—when, really, the elderly
patient just wants to be
comfortable. If you’re the older
patient, be sure your nurse and
your doctors know what you want.
–Nancy Beck, RN, a nurse at a
Missouri hospital

Boost your mind
before YOU leave
for work
Who needs brain fog to start their day? Nobody! To help you stay focused on the tasks of your
day, try these simple brain boosters to your early-morning routine.
Life can get pretty hectic for most of us, leaving us with very little, or no time for the things we
love as individuals. We have to heavy workloads, relationships and family responsibilities to
contend with. The stress of trying to keep up can zap our concentration, make us irritable or
depressed, and harm our relationships—including the professional ones we’ve forged at work.
Working out areas of the brain before a full day can set us on a path of increased agility and
flexibility in our thinking and enable us to communicate more calmly and effectively with our
colleagues. Fold a mix of these simple activities into your morning routine and you’ll find yourself
with a boosted mind, ready to take on anything the day throws at you!
Did
you know?
Your brain might account for only
about three percent of your body weight,
but it receives about 30 percent of the blood
being pumped by your heart. This shows how
much attention and support it requires in
comparison to the other seemingly
important areas of your
body.

improve our overall psychological makeup. Studies have found that the
amygdala, known as the brain’s ‘fight or flight’ center and the seat of our
fearful and anxious emotions, decreases in brain cell volume after
mindfulness practice. Meditating will allow you to take a step back,
become more aware, more accepting, less judgemental and less reactive.
Individuals who meditate on a constant basis somehow have a greater
ability to recall information faster, leading researchers to believe that the
ability to quickly ‘screen out’ mental noise, allowing sharper focus on tasks
at hand.
A Morning Workout
Exercise is a great way to
improve our health as well as our
mood, as we are well aware of,
but there are some additional
brain-boosting reasons to sneak
in a sweat session before work.
Exercise is capable of altering
your brain’s chemistry, with an
effect that is akin to taking
antidepressants. It can signal the
release of several key
neurotransmitters, many of
which play a vital role in keeping
our brain sharp as we age. When
you exercise, blood is pumped
more efficiently to the brain,
bringing along oxygen with it.
This allows our grey matter to
work to its highest capacity,
which translates to better and
sharper decision making,
judgment and memory.
Let There Be Classical Music In
The Background
The gentle, peaceful sounds of classical works
from the likes of Mozart and Beethoven have
long been touted as beneficial to the brain and
productivity in general. The most famous study
involves the so-called Mozart effect, found
that listening to classical music can enhance a
person’s spatial-temporal reasoning, or their
ability to think long-term and abstractly It has
also been found that listening to music in all
types of work and professions increased work
output by six percent. Listening to classical
music while getting dressed in the morning or
exercising is a one-two punch of neural
circuitry that’s been shown by researchers to
significantly improve verbal fluency, cognitive
functioning and overall focus and
concentration. So, do you have your Mozart
CD ready for tomorrow morning?

NEW AGE + Beyond
Play A Game Of
Sudoku In The Morning
Older people who love to learn
new things are definitely a step
ahead in their mind prowess
compared to others. Learning
and working out the brain
promote brain health and create
new neural connections. Even just
taking a stab at Sudoku or a
crossword puzzle that challenges
your mind, can help build
cognitive reserves, It’s important
to keep brain-boosting activities
constantly changing with
increasing complexity.
Consistency is key, and many of
these techniques can be done in
just a few minutes every morning
to keep your brain power and
your wits up!
Be Grateful And Count Your Blessings
When you bring your attention to the things in your life for which you’re grateful,
your brain actually works better. This may sound a little far off, but brain imaging
studies show that negative thought patterns change the brain in a negative way,
but that conversely, practicing gratitude literally helps power up your brain (and
that’s something to be grateful for, wouldn’t you say?). Every day, write down five
things you’re grateful for. Research from the University of Pennsylvania found that
when people did this exercise, they noticed a significant positive difference in their
level of happiness in just three weeks. Other researchers have found that people
who express gratitude on a regular basis are healthier, more optimistic, make more
progress towards their goals, have a greater sense of well-being and are more
helpful to others.
Read Something, Anything.
We are living in a time when it’s not easy to just unplug
as we like and take time for the simple things that relax
and stimulate our mind. So, whenever possible, take the
opportunity to this in the mornings instead - the effect is
just as gratifying! Reading, be it a chapter book,
newspaper, or online article can help shift your mind
and help you look at your tasks from a different
perspective. Taking in a good book or a piece of
welcome news in the papers is not only a calming way
to start your day, but it also can help you reorient your
priorities, taking you momentarily out of the daily grind
from yesterday before today’s begins.

5 Ways to Avoid
Food Wastage and
Help the Planet
One of the great joys of living in Malaysia is the fact that
food is abundant, thanks to the diversity of cultures in the
country. From nasi lemak breakfast to a midnight roti canai,
snack options are available all day, every day.
In addition to food runs, festive seasons also allow
Malaysians to indulge in a variety of spreads – from open
houses to restaurant buffets. One of the major pitfalls of this
abundance of food is the fact that Malaysians tend to over
order and overprepare meals, which leads to food waste.
The Importance of
Environmentally-
Friendly Choices
Since 1957 Malaysia, along
with the Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO), has
supported the country’s
National Save Food Network
drive to reduce food waste
and post-harvest losses.
Additionally, the FAO reports
that an estimated one-third,
or about 1.3 billion tons, of
all food produced globally is
lost or goes to waste, which
contributes to global food
insecurity.
It is a harsh reality to consider,
but this privilege can also
inspire us to make more
conscious eating choices.
A recent survey conducted
by Herbalife Nutrition around
plant-based diets showed that
40% of respondents’ food
choices were driven by a desire
to be more environmentallyfriendly.
Reducing food waste is
a simple, added bonus that can
have a great effect.

How You Can Make a
Positive Impact
When planning your family meals there
are several ways in which you can
help reduce food waste and live more
sustainably. Here are five of them:
Plan Ahead
Whether you’re meal-prepping
nutritious meals for the week, or
planning the menu for your next
gathering, planning ahead is a great way
to ensure you’re preparing only what
you can consume and not serving your
guests more than they can eat.
Cook with More
Sustainable
Ingredients
People are leaning towards
more plant-based diets for a variety
of reasons, including health concerns,
weight loss, or concerns about the
environment. For those who are just
starting to experiment, it might be best
to adopt a “flexitarian” diet or menu,
which is a primarily plant-based diet
with the occasional inclusion of meat,
poultry, fish or eggs. It’s a great way to
maintain a healthy, balanced diet, while
helping to protect the environment by
cutting down on energy and resources
used to produce red meat. There are
more and more plant-based foods in
the market such as the plant-based
‘meat’ burger patties and pea-based
dairy alternatives.
Plate Up in the Kitchen
instead of at the Table
As Malaysians, we love to
serve our guests with a wide
variety of items, typically in buffet style.
However, at the end of the function,
there are always plenty of leftovers that
could ‘feed an entire village’, as people
commonly say. Consider portioning
out your meal in the kitchen. Serving
food family-style makes it easy for
everyone to help themselves, which is
precisely why it’s not such a good idea
if you’re trying to control portions,
and ultimately avoid food waste. With
serving dishes on the table, it’s just too
easy to have “just another spoonful.”
One of the biggest sources of food
waste comes from food left on the
plate, which often ends up in the trash.
Repurpose Foods
that are Reaching
Expiration
There are many ways to
get the most out of your perishable
food items, even when they start
to look a little sad. When your
tomatoes get too mushy to cut up
for salads, consider making them into
homemade tomato sauce. Are your
bananas getting brown and squishy?
Give them more life by unpeeling
them and keep them in the freezer as
a healthy smoothie ingredient! Soups,
stews, salads are great dishes that can
incorporate many different ingredients
with shorter shelf lives.
Donate Extras to those
in Need
This year, our government
expanded the Food Bank
Malaysia program aimed at helping
to reduce the cost of living for local
consumers in the B40 group, as well
as local university students. If you are
clearing out your pantry, consider
donating extra shelf-stable food items
to local food banks and charities.
The next time you are cleaning out
your refrigerator, freezer or pantry, pay
attention to what you’ve tossed and
make an effort to reduce food waste in
the future.

Safe and effective medicine for all - The aim of GSK
Pharmacists are key members within the healthcare system as they are the most accessible healthcare professionals for the community.
According to the 2015 National Survey on the Use of Medicines by Malaysian Consumers, up to 70% of patients on regular medication
are turning to pharmacists for consultation and information on medicines. In line with the 2019 World Pharmacists Day’s theme of ‘Safe
and effective medicines for all’, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Sdn Bhd and the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS) have
reaffirmed their commitment to upholding high standards of consumer safety in their products and supply chain.
1,000 pharmacists from the MPS joined GSK in this commitment through a display of a sticker pledge on their premise. The pledge
served as a reminder to both patients and pharmacists that patient safety, through proactive and clear communication on adherence
to correct medicine use, should be prioritised.
