ABOUT THE PAINTING
The painting ‘Motherhood’ by Stanisław Wyspiański
(1869-1907) shows the artist’s wife and one of their three
children. I think it’s important that the people in the
picture were not strangers. You can almost feel the
warmth of feelings behind the picture. Gazing at this
intimate scene, we feel almost like intruders.
Mother looks overjoyed and delighted. Maybe she is a
bit tired but it doesn’t seem to matter. The child feels
safe and relaxed, being in his mum’s arms. I guess the
baby appreciates his mum’s attention and
uncodditional love. You can see immediately that the
relationship between those two is simply unbreakable.
Although the baby is very young, his eyes, which by the
way match perfectly the colour of his coat, seem to
express serious emotions, maybe even wisdom.
The delicate colours used in the picture boost subtle
affection shown in the painting.
‘Motherhood’ by Wyspiański awakens sweet and calm
feelings in me. When I become mother in the future I
hope to have such a beautiful relationship with my baby.
