83nity in the state is especially vulnerable to infection“As Georgia reopens many businessesover objections from President Trump andothers, a new study illustrates the highrates of corona virus infection amongblack people in the state.The report, released Wednesday by theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention,said that more than four-fifths ofhospitalized corona virus patients in thestudy were black. They were not morelikely than other groups to die from thedisease or to require a ventilator. Still, ofthe 297 patients in the study whose raceand ethnicity were known, 83.2 percentwere black.“That is a very high rate of infections,”said Dr. Wayne A.I. Frederick, a cancersurgeon and the president of Howard University,who was not involved in theC.D.C. report. He said the high percentageof blacks in the study likely reflects thepatients’ occupations.“A lot of it may come from the fact thatAfrican-Americans are essential employeesin our system,” he said, adding,“Everything from bus drivers to healthcare workers and cleaning services, theyare on the front line, and therefore are farmore likely to be exposed.”
