Under the Covers
secrets of a Magazine editor - by Jenny lynch
Former editor Jenny Lynch takes the wraps off the unreported side of life in
print, explodes myths, unearths secrets and shows that even on seemingly
conservative publications such as the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly things
were seldom exactly as they seemed.
Her memoir, aptly titled “Under the Covers”, is a revealing account of what
went on behind the closed doors of various editorial offices and newsrooms
during one of the most colourful periods in magazine and newspaper
history. Lynch’s 30-year path to her top job was full of drama and off-beat
activities. But nothing she had experienced before she became editor of the
Weekly prepared her for the challenges that lay ahead.
Indeed, the magazine’s battle for dominance in what became known as The
Magazine Wars was fought against a backdrop of management turbulence and ownership changes.
Peppered with the names of those who have touched the author’s life, including the famous and the
fleeting, “Under the Covers” will appeal to everyone who enjoys reading about the ever-changing world
of print media.
make yeast from grapes, yoghurt using chilli stalks and many others she has discovered.
Code Name Hélène - by ariel lawhon
This book is based on the life of Nancy Wake, an Australian expat who
worked as a reporter for Hearst in Paris just before WWII and later as a spy
for the British.
Lawhon throws readers into the middle of the action, as Nancy, under the
alias Hélène, prepares to parachute from an RAF plane into France to help
the Resistance in 1944, carrying in her head memorized lists of vital data,
including bridges targeted for destruction and safe house addresses.
After she lands, the story flashes back eight years, as Nancy struggles for
respect and recognition as a journalist; despite her firsthand observations
of Nazi brutality in 1930s Vienna, her editor is reluctant to publish a story
about what she’s seen. Frequent jumps in time draw out the arc of Wake’s
remarkable life; despite her statement early on that women’s weapons of
warfare were limited to “silk stockings and red lipstick,” by the end she’s
proven herself skillful at physical combat as well.
Our Game
new Zealand rugby at 150 - by ron palenski
The year 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the first game of rugby
in Nelson; this book celebrates 150 years of New Zealand’s national
game, the game more than any other that has helped shape the New
Zealand psyche and identity. It will take the form of 150 short stories
- stories about the players, the teams, the provinces, the trophies,
everything that helped make the game what it is, from the first in
the horse and buggy days to the latest in the days of ultra-modern
technology. It will talk of players who no one living saw play; and it will
talk of players who are recognised wherever they go in the widening
rugby world. And who can talk of players and resist speculating who
the greatest of all might have been?
It’s opinions and speculation that make up some of the enduring appeal
of the game New Zealanders are (mostly) better at than anyone else.
