A GOOD man with a
chainsaw.
That’s how Harry Stronach
describes his friend,
well-known Akaroa identity
Johnny McDrury, who
died in a car crash at the
weekend.
Mr McDrury, who lived
in Wainui died in a singlecar
crash at 12.20am on
Sunday on State Highway
75, between Robinsons Bay
and Takamatua Bay.
He was the sole occupant
of the car.
Mr Stronach said Mr
McDrury had lived in
Banks Peninsula for about
20 years.
He had three young
adult children Josh, Ruby
and Jamie McDrury. A
Givealittle page, which has
(as of Tuesday) raised over
$7000, has been created to
support them.
Said Mr Stronach: “He
(Mr McDrury) was an
Akaroa identity.
“He worked in the
timber industry doing
chainsawing sort of work,
tree work and so on.
“He was a good man with
a chainsaw, there’s no question
about that,” he said.
Mr Stronach said Mr
McDrury had a number of
clients in the Akaroa area.
“He actually used to
come and work at our
place. Every couple of
weeks he would come here
for a day and he would do
gardening work or assist
with the trees on the property
here.”
Mr Stronach remembers
Mr McDrury as a kind and
thoughtful man.
“He was a real sort of
gentleman . . . and a bit of a
deep thinker and so on.”
Mr Stronach believes
Mr McDrury was likely
driving home when it happened.
