NEWS | 45REVEALED: First design sketches of newVolkswagen AmarokAt the recent annual VolkswagenGroup Media Conference adramatic design sketch of thenext series Amarok 1-tonne Pick-up truckwas revealed. As previously reported, thenew Amarok will be one of the first newmodels to emerge from the much heraldedcollaboration between VolkswagenCommercial Vehicles (VWCV) and theFord Motor Company’s CommercialDivision.Due for launch late next year, the newAmarok will share many components withthe next generation Ford Ranger, whilekeeping with Volkswagen family modelstyling.VWCV Head designer Albert Kirzingeinformed Fleet Van & Utility that theAmarok project is well underway and heand his team are excited about what liesahead. The first design drawings suggestthat the new Amarok will feature an evenmore powerful and aggressive stance thanthe current model, though we expect whatwill finally emerge will take styling cuesfrom the new Caddy 5 launched earlier thisyear, with the actual production model beingtoned-down somewhat from the designartist’s impression.Co-designing of a range of vans betweenboth parties are to follow, with the fifthedition of the Volkswagen Caddy van andMPV to form the basis for the new FordTransit Connect line-up, while there is anas yet unannounced plan for partnershipbetween both brands in the medium andlarge van categories, which will include ajoint assembly programme. The comingtogether of these two powerful auto brandsis all about production volume and synergycost savings, in what’s likely to be an evenmore competitive global marketplace postCoronavirus.There are no details yet about the powertrainsbut we expect a hybrid option availablealongside traditional diesel engines.Twice winner of the International Pick-upAward, since the award was introduced in2009, the Amarok won many other nationaltitles around the globe when it was launched.Global sales were positive with the DoubleCab utility cum leisure vehicle maintainingstrong market performance throughout itslife. Last year worldwide sales reached 72,513units following on from 79,000 and 81,000units purchased the previous two years.200,000 third generation Citroën BerlingosLess than 18 months since it waslaunched, the third-generationCitroën Berlingo has alreadygenerated over 200,000 sales worldwide.Across Europe, the 2019 InternationalVan of the Year winner achieved 16%segment share (Berlingo and BerlingoVan combined) in 2019, making a majorcontribution to the strong Europeanperformance of Citroën overall, as thebrand achieved the strongest growthamongst the top 12 carmakers in 2019.In its segment in 2019, two out of threeregistrations were for the commercialvehicle version.With its class-leading comfort, intelligentdesign and driving assistance technologies,the multi-award winning third-generationBerlingo van strengthens its appeal througha rich product mix, and options such as theExtenso Cab (three front seats) which nearly80% of customers in Europe are selecting.Another popular choice, selected by nearlya quarter of buyers, is the Surround RearVision option that comes with a five-inchscreen located in the place of the interiorrear-view mirror.www.fleet.ie
