Stingray leather jewellery,
called Galuchat in French, is a rare species of fish leather,
which is characterised by its special
resistance. The manufacturing process
is a lengthy procedure with several
intermediate steps, the most striking
feature being the spine, which is
mechanically ground off on the
surface. The surface, which shimmers like
pearls at this point, adds an interesting accent.
This stingray leather, to which other types of fish such as sharks are sometimes also
used, has been known to be processed since the 18th century, when a
master saddler at the court of Louis XV named Jean-Claude Galuchat
discovered this leather, which was originally only produced in
Russia, and introduced it to Europe for the decoration of precious
objects such as sabre handles. But the same was already common in
the then undiscovered Japan for military use in the 8th century
because of its stability, including for breastplates. But the real
breakthrough in Europe was not achieved until the 20th
century, especially in Art Deco, where this now highly
fashionable material was mainly used for the surfaces of
small furniture, caskets, but also for high-quality accessories,
for pieces of jewellery such as bracelets, belts, handbags and
shoes in every imaginable shade of colour.
Its haptic appeal, which on the one hand feels glassy and the decoratively cut off
remnants of the sting of the ray, which feel like a slightly raised
band of strung together pearls, on the other hand, this
material, which can feel just as well for belts supple and soft
after appropriate treatment, radiates something desirable, very
erotic, feminine, to which all those who have once had the
taste to wear it matching their type also as a piece of jewellery
have fallen for in the most positive sense. You will find a
small selection of ideas and possibilities here in our new
program line.
