s gibt viele Farbtöne in Blau. Aber nur wenige

haben die Magie des „purple blue“. Die Ursache
für dieses blaue Farbwunder aus Mitternachtsblau
mit einem Hauch von Violett eines erstmals
1967 in den Merelani-Hills im Norden Tansanias
neu entdeckten hochtransparenten
Minerals mit hohem Pleochroismus oder
Mehrfarbigkeit blieb zwar bis heute
nicht restlos geklärt, faszinierte aber
sofort die Fachpresse und wurde als
Jahrhundertfund gefeiert. Was hier auf
den weiten Ebene im Schatten des Kilimandscharo
zutage trat, hatte sein Blau
von Vanadium und war im Prinzip von der
chemischen und kristallographischen Struktur
her etwas Altbekanntes, und sogar in Österreich
erstmals 1780 gefundenes Mineral; nur von gänzlich
anderer Farbe, nämlich aschgrau bis grün - ein auf der
Kärntner Saualpe vor rund 200 Jahren von einem slowenischen
Adeligen und Mineralogen, Baron von Zois aus
Laibach entdecktes Silikat. Zwar sind die in Tansania gefundenen
Steine auch oft unansehnlich, mit braunen und
gelben Einschlüssen, was allerdings nach dem Brennen bei
550 Grad, welches ein durchaus handelsübliches Verfahren
ist, herrliche transparent-blaue Kristalle hervorbringt.
Anfangs gab es nicht genug Material davon, um kommerzielle
Schmuckverarbeitung damit sinnvoll zu bedienen,
und das trieb die Preise in die Höhe. Speziell als Tiffany
& Co diesen neuen Stein sofort für ihre Produktion fast
zu einem Markenzeichen machten, und der Direktor des
weltbekannten Unternehmens, Henry B. Platt den Stein
einfach „Tansanit“ taufte, weil Zoisit weniger gute Marktchancen
hätte, da es phonetisch zu sehr an das Englische
Wort für Selbstmord (suicide) erinnerte, wurde der Tansanit
schnell populär.
There are many shades of blue. But only a few have the
magic of “purple blue”. The cause of this miracle in midnight
blue with a touch of violet has still to be fully explained.
It was discovered in the Merelani Hills in northern
Tanzania in 1967. The high pleochromism or
multi-colour has still to be fully explained,
but it immediately fascinated the specialist
press and was celebrated as the find of a
century. What came out into the light of
day in the shadow of Kilimanjaro owed
its blue to vanadium, and its chemical
and crystalline structure was in principle
well known already, from a mineral found
for the first time – actually in Austria – in
1780; but it was of a wholly different hue, being
between ash-grey and green. Indeed, the stones
found in Tanzania are often unremarkable, with brown and
yellow flecks, but when heated to 550°C – a process that is
usual in the trade – a wonderful blue crystal appears.
Initially there was not enough material for commercial
processing into jewellery to be worthwhile, and that
drove the prices sky-high – particularly when Tiffany & Co
almost adopted this new stone as a trademark and the
head of the world-famous company, Henry B Platt, named
it simply Tansanit. It would have done less well as Zoisit
which sounds too much like suicide, but Tansanit quickly
became popular.
And it did not take long for healers to make recommendations.
Tansanit is believed to help relieve tonsilitis,
hoarseness, headache, cerebral tumours, earache and
problems with the eyes; also to harmonise and order
thoughts and wishes, and help depressives to regain the
power of thinking more positively and clearly. n
Auch die Heilmedizin ließ nicht lange mit Empfehlungen
auf sich warten. So soll der Tansanit bei Mandelentzündung,
Heiserkeit, Kopfschmerzen, Kopftumor, Ohrenschmerzen
und Augenkrankheiten helfen; er soll auch
Gedanken und Wünsche harmonisieren und ordnen, und
depressiven Menschen helfen, wieder klarer und positiver
zu denken.
