THE GREEN HANDBOOKI Might Become a Hybrid Yoga Teacherby Alyson TylerAs a yoga and massage therapist,the lockdown restrictions and social(physical) distancing has meant asudden change to my business andpersonal life, as it has for everyone.But the rise in stress, anxiety, worryand low moods among the generalpublic means that sharing thingslike calming breathing techniques,mindful movement and mindfulnesspractices is very important.At the start of the lockdown I spent awhile researching all the options foronline yoga classes. Some teachersbravely jumped in straight away. Somehave decided online teaching is notfor them, for various reasons. Eachresponse is right for that yoga teacher.I had the time and love doing research,so I signed up to lots of yoga webinars,joined the new Facebook groups, andlearnt more than I needed to knowabout microphones! I started takingonline yoga classes with local andfurther away teachers who I hadn’tseen for a while, which is nice.I also had the time to finally research,choose and set up an online bookingand payment platform, which I’d beenmeaning to do for a year and a half. Ican use this in the future for massagebookings and my yoga classes so it’sbeen a good investment of time.I started delivering online yogaclasses during the Easter weekend. Mycurrent schedule involves differenttypes of classes to suit different needs.This includes free 30 minute sessionswithin a private Facebook group thatanyone can request to join, and my‘Dumfries’ full-length regular yogaclasses but in an online setting, againopen to all. At the time of writing Iam deciding about adding some moreclasses e.g. 45 minute lunchtime class.What’s been lovely is that friends andfamily from across the UK have beenable to join my classes, as have somepeople who came to my yoga classeswhen I lived in Wales. As a result, Ican see me keeping some of the onlineyoga, even if/when we are able todeliver studio-based classes or 1-2-1sessions – a hybrid yoga teacher.And whilst fellow yoga teacher KerryRiddell and myself couldn’t run ourretreat in May, we created a free onlinepackage for those who had bookedonto the retreat, so that they couldenjoy something at home instead.Online yoga is not for everyonethough, and they are a differentexperience, which I’ve noticed asboth a teacher and a participant. ButI believe they’re a great option formany.Although I have been able to offerdigital yoga, online massage is moreof a challenge!
