THE GREEN HANDBOOKA Retreat atHomeby Susan NealThe past few weeks of having tostay at home have felt a littlebit like a retreat. I guess beinga practitioner of yoga and qigong, andhaving experienced short retreats,including those with silence, has beena preparation for the isolation thathas been imposed. Plus I am aware oflong time introvert tendencies.As a yoga and qigong teacher, I havecertainly missed my students. Likemany others, I have taken to usingZoom to teach online and it has beena boon in keeping that contact. Anunexpected benefit has been theability to access my own teachers’online classes. One qigong teacher,who is an acknowledged master, issomeone I only see once a year or sobecause of geography. Now, thanksto the move to online classes, I canpractice with her several times a week.I am also able to access a lovely yogateacher who lives a couple of hundredmiles away.The garden has been a refuge and thebeautiful weather has been a greatincentive to get outside. I feel a greatdeal of sympathy for anyone who doesnot have a garden in these times. InLockerbie, lots of people have beenhelping each other through contact onsocial media - I hope that carries onwhen a more active life resumes.I do have family to sustain me. Weare not on top of each other duringthe day. We come together for mealsand chat and then go off and do ourown thing in various corners of thehouse and garden. It is peaceful andproductive.What I have missed is meeting withfamily and friends. I have missedtravel too - I like to do an occasional‘Thelma and Louise’ road trip withmy pals and look forward to thoseexcursions. My trailer tent is sittingunused, waiting for that trip toFrance. I am unsure yet whether thatbit of wanderlust will have declined,or whether it will come back fullforce. I do feel we should be morecircumspect about how much we useair travel in the future, given how theearth seems to have taken a big sighand breathed a little easier. I wouldlike us all to consider keeping a slowerpace of life for the foreseeable future.Some useful links:1.
