THE GREEN HANDBOOKTO MASK OR NOT TO MASKAt the time of writing, maskwearing has not been madecompulsory in the UK. InMarch, I contacted a friend whosews professionally and asked her tomake four cloth masks in case any ofus got ill and needed to self-isolatewithin the house. At the same time,a friend in the health service put outa desperate message for protectiveequipment, so the first batch of masksended up going to our local healthteam. Thus began a cottage industryin Moniaive, funded by the localCommunity Council, supplying freewashable masks to people here whowanted them. This is ongoing.Unfortunately, like a lot of things, thesubject of mask-wearing has becomedeeply politicised and mired withconspiracy theories. Since January,I have been following the researchand policies around the world andin March, I took an online courseon the Covid-19 pandemic withthe London School of Hygiene &Tropical Medicine. My firm opinionon the subject is that wearing maskssignificantly reduces the risk ofspreading the illness and, in a smallway, reduces the risk of catching it.So should we be forced to wear masksin public? Not really. Enforcingthese things is never the best wayforward. Unlike in some countries– e.g. Republic of Ireland or NewZealand – the public has not beentrusted with reliable factual publicinformation. Reluctance to promotemask wearing goes back to the thetoilet paper shortage (which wascaused by poor public informationmore than selfishness). Demand forsurgical masks might exacerbate PPEshortages in the NHS. We have beenlet down, and misled.However, it’s simple. Covering thenose and mouth reduce virus particlesflying out of our mouths when wespeak. And for shouting, coughingand sneezing, the viurs travels fargreater than two metres. Indoors thesituation is worse and particles staysuspended in the air much longer.This is why the Scottish Governmenthas advised people to wear masks onpublic transport and when shopping.From a statistical point of view, oneperson wearing a mask makes only atiny difference, but as more and morepeople wear them, the communityrisk of infection starts to reducedramatically. Wearing a mask is notparticularly pleasant, but it is a simpleact of kindness – about half thepeople spreading coronavirus have nosymptoms at all and no idea they arespreaders. It could be you or me.8
