Thursday June 25 2020 The Star • By Matt Slaughter NOISY PARTIES and loud music have been a concern for some Christchurch residents since level 1 began. And the city council says there have been more noise complaints compared to this time last year. City council head of regulatory compliance Tracey Weston said there have been 431 noise complaints since level 1 began on June 9. In comparison, she said in the same time period last year, there were 288 noise complaints. “A possible reason for the 2020 increase could be that more people have organised gatherings and parties to compensate for the time spent apart while in lockdown as well as restrictions on event sizes,” she said. She said the city council is unable to provide figures on where the majority of the noise complaints during level 1 have come from. However, members of Facebook groups for different parts of Christchurch have been posting their frustrations at noise levels since level 1 began. A post made to the Spreydon Neighbourhood Network group on Saturday said: “Lots of loud banging and bass on Lyttelton St, those young ones drinking with their large boom box. How will we sleep tonight?” Also on Saturday, someone wrote on the Beckenham Neighbourhood (Christchurch NZ) group saying: “Anyone know where that loud piano music is coming from near Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Harness racing trainer faces assault charge • By Matt Slaughter A CANTERBURY harness racing trainer is facing an assault charge after an incident at the Kaikoura races in November. It is alleged he punched another trainer leaving him with a black eye after a verbal altercation centred around the ongoing police investigation into corruption in the harness racing industry, codenamed Operation Inca. The trainer has pleaded not guilty and has interim name suppression. Operation Inca is an investigation into alleged racefixing and drug-related matters. A number of people in the industry are before the courts on various charges. The assault charge comes as another Canterbury racing trainer Nigel McGrath pleaded guilty to three racing charges brought by the Racing Integrity Unit earlier this month after a raid at his Weedons property. NEWS 3 in brief End soon for Regenerate Chch City councillors will consider signing off on a transfer agreement which would see earthquake regeneration company Regenerate Christchurch come to an end at the end of this month. The organisation was set up in 2016 to help lead the city’s post-earthquake regeneration. The city council and Crown have agreed to bring forward Regenerate Christchurch’s disestablishment to the end of this month. A report set to be discussed by councillors today recommends the company’s assets are transferred between the city council and Crown. Netball centre decision today A decision will be made today by city councillors whether or not to buy the Christchurch Netball Centre in South Hagley Park. City council staff believe the centre is ideally suited to be used as a multi-cultural centre. If the city council agrees to buy the building, it will invite Hagley College to be an anchor community partner in the new centre. The city council has $3 million in funding set aside for a multi-cultural centre in Christchurch. Lighting upgrades for busy roads LED lighting on busy Christchurch roads will be upgraded between now and December. Electricity distribution company Connetics has been contracted by the city council to replace old street lights throughout the city. The new lighting will be designed to provide safe environments for motorists and pedestrians at night and conform to the Australian/ New Zealand Road Lighting Standard. In some incidences, lights will be brighter for several days until they are set to their correct wattage. Household power supplies will not be disrupted by this work and streets will not be dug up.
