toastmasters club
A PAPANUI-based
toastmaster’s club has
won two awards for public
speaking and having a
positive impact on the
community.
Christchurch Women’s
Club Toastmasters has won
the Jack Duffy memorial
rose bowl for exceptional
contribution to the
community.
It is the second
consecutive year the club
has won this accolade,
which was awarded at the
Toastmasters International
District 72 conference.
Said Toastmasters
International district
director Diane Isherwood:
“It is fantastic to see
that the members of
Christchurch Women’s
Toastmasters have taken
the skills that they have
learned and done so much
for the community.”
Toastmasters, through its
educational programme,
gives members the
opportunity and support
to improve confidence and
develop communication
and leadership skills.
The president of the
Christchurch women’s
club Sheila Hailstone
said the women have
led fundraising groups,
developed podcasts
during Covid-19, written
and published two books
with funds raised to go
to Women’s Refuge and
breast cancer research
and have given keynote
speeches.
“The members truly
express the core value
of this club, supporting
women to succeed,” she
said.
Club member Laura
Bruce won the District 72
humorous speech contest,
held online for the first
time.
Her speech, Smart,
helpful, and a great
communicator – she’s the
ultimate assistant, was
a satirical take on the
benefits of virtual assistant
‘Alexa’ in the context of a
smart home.
“I was delighted to win
the humourous speech
contest,” said Laura, who
began her journey to the
district championship by
winning her club’s contest
back in September.
“The strangest part was
competing against my
friend, Albertus Viljoen,
who had won the division
contest in Wellington. Fortunately,
he came second,
so it turned out okay.
“Toastmasters has
opened up so many doors
for me. It gave me the
confidence to try stand-up
comedy, which I never
could have imagined
before toastmasters.”
She now regularly
performs stand-up comedy
in Christchurch, and was
the South Island runner-up
in the 2020 Raw Comedy
Quest.
All women are welcome
to attend Christchurch
Women’s Club
Toastmasters meetings.
The 60min meetings
feature members giving
prepared speeches as well
as an impromptu speaking
component.
