Flystrike in Rabbits
Rabbits are particularly susceptible to flystrike if they are unable to keep themselves clean of urine
and faeces. However, even healthy, active rabbits can get dirty bottoms from time to time.
Obesity can make it very difficult for a rabbit to clean urine or faeces from its fur, and so can
arthritis, which is made even more problematic by obesity. Painful dental problems can make a
rabbit reluctant or unable to clean itself properly.
Flystrike occurs when flies lay their eggs on an animal. The eggs hatch into maggots, which eat
the flesh of the animal they are on. During hot weather maggots are more active and develop
more rapidly. When the maggots begin to feast on the flesh of that animal, the results can be
catastrophic. It only takes a few hours from flies laying eggs, to maggots hatching and eating into
a rabbit's flesh. Once they are established, huge damage can be done and many rabbits don't
recover.
How to prevent flystrike:
‣ In the summer months especially, rabbits must be checked at least twice per day. If their
bottom is dirty, wash with warm water and a shampoo for small pets. Rinse thoroughly and
dry as the smell of damp fur can attract flies too!
‣ Soiled bedding and litter must be removed regularly, preferably daily. Left in the rabbit's
home, it will attract flies and will itself soil fur.
‣ Apply a preparation to your rabbit's fur that will prevent fly eggs from hatching.
(Ask your vet for details of this product)
If your rabbit gets flystrike this is an emergency. You need to get your rabbit to your vet
immediately. Its life is in danger and it will be in great pain.
Our Healthy Pet Club Rabbit Scheme includes vaccinations,
flystrike prevention treatment, bag of hay/food per month and
many extras. Look on our website for more information.
