LED lighting techniquesFor warehouses and logistics centres with longoperating times, modern LED luminaires offer particularlyclear advantages. In halls up to six metreshigh, the continuous row system should featuredifferent lighting techniques so that storage, orderpicking, packaging and despatch area lighting canbe optimised and tailored to requirements.Integrated lighting techniques that make supplementaryreflectors superfluous are particularly efficientand easy to install.For halls over six metres high, LED high-bay reflectorluminaires are recommended.The instant luminous flux delivered by LEDs andthe high switching resistance of the luminaires areperfect for use with presence detectors in aisles.This taps a great deal of additional energy-savingpotential.Warehouse lightingStorage rooms and warehouses are often served by little or no naturaldaylight. Their design presents special lighting requirements. Presencecontrol systems ensure efficiency and security.Less light is needed for warehouse workthan for production operations. But goodlighting can still make a difference – bycompensating for lack of daylight and promotingstaff wellbeing.Relatively high illuminance is particularly importantwhere small items are handled andfor all order-picking operations that involvelabelling and form-filling. For high-bay racking,high vertical illuminance is a key requirement.So the 100 lux to 200 lux (forconstantly manned storage facilities) averageilluminance set out in DIN EN 12464-1is often not enough; licht.de recommends300 lux for reading tasks.Vertical illuminanceThe highest requirements are presented byhigh bay warehouses, which often havevery narrow aisles. Narrow-angle luminairesare the right choice here, along with wideangleor asymmetrical luminaires to providethe vertical illuminance needed for readingand searching tasks. In cold stores, dedicatedluminaires for damp interiors need tobe used. LED systems lend themselvesvery well to this application because of theirgood luminous flux delivery at low temperatures.Lamps with a warm white or neutral whitelight colour are an appropriate choice forstorage facilities. Good colour rendering isalso important; the colour rendering indexshould be at least R a 80.Point out to your customers that warehouseoperating costs can also be substantiallylowered byenergy-saving lamps such as LEDs andmodern fluorescent lamps,electronic ballasts andintelligent lighting control.Motion detectors automatically activatelighting when it is needed. If no movementis registered within a pre-specified time, thelighting is automatically deactivated again.More information on the subject canbe found in the booklets licht.wissen 05“Industry and Trade” and licht.wissen 10“Emergency Lighting, Safety Lighting”.[28] Efficient LED luminaires or fluorescentlamps are used in warehouses up to six metreshigh. For facilities higher than six metres,high-pressure discharge lamps are an alternative.29[29] Luminaires for high-bay warehouseshave special angled reflectors. In many LEDluminaires, the technical feature is alreadyintegrated.25
