Dynamic lightingFitness rooms are often located in rooms with littleincident daylight in commercial building complexes.Where this is the case, high luminous efficacymakes for major energy savings.And that is not all: the advantages of modern LEDlighting technology can give lighting for suchfacilities a totally new quality: luminaires with awidely variable light colour, i.e. flexible colourtemperature control, make it possible to create thestimulating effect of daylight indoors at relativelylittle additional expense. This supports the naturalhuman day/night rhythm and promotes wellbeing,motivation and relaxation.Lighting control is provided by conventional componentson the basis of a DALI interface.38Sports and leisure facility lightingLeisure sport plays an important role in many people’s life. Whether it is football, indoor climbing or yoga – the rightlight keeps us safe, helps us unwind and is energy-efficient.The primary purpose of lighting in fitnessstudios and sports halls is safety: athletesneed to be able to use equipment with confidenceand, in fast games like squash,identify balls and their trajectory with ease.Supplementary accent lighting enhancesvisual comfort, lends structure to the roomand makes for a greater sense of wellbeing.Lighting control for convenienceThe lighting requirements of sports facilitiesare almost as diverse as the sports theycater for. So, intelligent planning of switchingcircuits and thought-through lightingcontrol are crucially important. They takeaccount of different requirements andensure greater efficiency.Lighting should always be dimmable, atleast in certain areas or individual rooms, sothat the light can be more finely tuned tothe needs of those training: more light for aballet workout, lower lighting for relaxationexercises on the floor. Care must be takento ensure that people lying on their backare not dazzled by the light from luminaires.Light sources need to be appropriatelyshielded and angled. Variety is offered bylighting that permits dynamic changes ofcolour. This is a particularly popular optionfor fitness centres and can be achieved,for example, with LED luminaires or RGBfluorescent lamps.Avoidance of glareGuidance on illuminance is provided byDIN EN 12193. In many sports, at least200 lux illuminance is sufficient for training.In spinning or weight training on machines,a minimum of 300 lux is required. It isimportant to ensure that reflected glare onscreens and displays is avoided.In a multi-purpose hall, the lighting levelneeds to be appropriate for the sport withthe most exacting requirements. A regularluminaire arrangement is normally adopted.Fitment options – recessed luminaires,surface-mounted luminaires or suspendedcontinuous rows – depend on the height ofthe hall and the type of ceiling.
