Good verticalilluminance on faces is important here. Suspended LEDtask zone luminaires are a good choice. At the treatmentcouch, supplementary lighting needs to be provided todeliver the 1,000 lux required. Dimmable luminaires arerecommended here: in dimmed operation – e.g. at20 percent – they help provide agreeable general lighting;set for full output, they deliver the light needed forexaminations and treatment.Depending on requirements, a separately switchedexamination light should be provided.35Doctor’s surgery lightingReception area, consulting room, examination room – lighting for a doctor’s surgery needs to meet a range ofrequirements. Tailored design ensures that the right light is available for all visual tasks and that patients feel theyare in good hands.Lighting design for a doctor’s surgery hastwo defining aspects. First of all, physiciansand surgery staff require optimal functionallight for the work they perform in treatmentrooms, at VDU workplaces and in thelaboratory. Secondly, waiting areas andconsulting rooms should have a lightingatmosphere that patients find reassuringand re laxing. With flexible LED systemsand comfortable lighting control, lightingconcepts can be easily and efficientlyimplemented for diagnosis, therapy andwellbeing.Reception and waiting roomThe reception is the calling card of a doctor’ssurgery. It makes the first impressionon the patient and, at the same time, constitutesa workplace for receptionists.Bright, uniform, cheerful lighting is correcthere. For work at the computer, VDU workplacestipulations require at least 500 luxand freedom from glare.30Good reading light for waiting areas is providedby suspended luminaires – if necessarysupplemented by wall luminaires for direct/indirectlight distribution – delivering300 lux illuminance. Accents can be set bye.g. coloured light from diffuse LED lighttiles.Treatment roomsIn the consulting room, physician and staffneed good general lighting with a uniform500 lux illuminance as well as flexible lightingfor examinations. Where an intelligentcontrol system is installed, the lighting caneasily be switched and dimmed to theoptimal illuminance, which can range from5 lux, e.g. for special eye and ear examinations,to several thousand lux. Very goodcolour rendering – at least R a M 90 – isobligatory.Bright LEDs are increasingly the lightsource of choice for examination rooms.Their advantages here are their longevity– which keeps maintenance to a minimum –their low heat gain and the possibility ofintegrating LEDs of different colour temperaturesin a single luminaire. This colourmix offers the option of varying light colourat the push of a button or by remote controlto suit the examination in question: neutralwhite for general examinations, for example,warm white light for assessing the conditionof skin, cool white light for quicklyidentifying blood vessels.
