Squash courts to be a<br />
‘sporting highlight’ for city<br />
IT WAS a bold idea that simply<br />
could not be squashed.<br />
The Richmond Club is set to<br />
rebuild three squash courts at<br />
the same time as the current<br />
rebuild programme.<br />
The club’s executive sought to<br />
delay the build - and there was<br />
another bid not to build them at<br />
all – but most members voted to<br />
secure them.<br />
The squash courts on the club<br />
site were lost to the Canterbury<br />
quakes. That they will be reinstated<br />
has delighted all club members,<br />
not just squash players.<br />
“Members realised what an<br />
asset the new courts will be and<br />
a way to encourage youth in the<br />
area to take up another sporting<br />
activity,” Ross Williams, of<br />
the Richmond Club, said.<br />
Mr Williams said it would cost<br />
about $250,000 to construct the<br />
facilities, complete with changing<br />
rooms and showers.<br />
The squash section of the club<br />
was formed in 1969. Members<br />
played at the YMCA courts on<br />
Hereford St until the courts were<br />
built and opened in 1975.<br />

youth to join the club with junior<br />
nights and tournaments injecting<br />
a vibrancy into the club.<br />
The courts were utilised by all<br />
members, section or otherwise,<br />
at all times of the day.<br />
The section before the earthquakes<br />
was involved in interclub<br />
Canterbury Squash, which<br />
was two nights a week.<br />
Mr Williams said construction<br />
began last year and the club<br />
was hoping to finish works by<br />
November this year.<br />
Online food<br />
pantry<br />

A PROJECT to provide the St<br />
Albans community with an<br />
online food exchange is starting<br />
to take shape.<br />
The idea to run the online<br />
pantry, by the St Albans Residents<br />
Association, was a chance<br />
for those who had unwanted or<br />
excess food to exchange with others,<br />
reducing waste along the way.<br />
Papanui-Innes Community<br />
Board member Emma Twaddell<br />
said following financial fallout<br />
from Covid-19 within households,<br />
an initiative like this was<br />
important for the community.<br />
“Because of Covid-19, there’s<br />
a lot more people without work.<br />
We want to ensure our community<br />
is resilient,” she said.<br />
“Funding is drying up, so we<br />
can’t rely on others – we have to<br />
do it ourselves and support each<br />
other.”<br />
She said the project was online<br />
as more people could access the<br />
service.<br />
Ms Twadell said it was an<br />
opportunity for those who had<br />
lost jobs to volunteer and do<br />
something beneficial for their<br />
community.<br />
