Year 12 WhiteWater Rafting Trip
Outdoor Education teacher Luke Martin said that the Year 12 Outdoor
Education students were very happy indeed toget the‘nod’tobeable to
head out on their trips again.
White Water Rafting down the Rangitata River onWednesday 17June
became the first trip after lockdown and, although in the middle of winter,
the weather-gods playednicely and put on awarmsunnyday.
The trip gave students the opportunity toput in to practise what they had
learnt from their Risk ManagementUnit.Luke said thatitisall well and good
talking about risks and howtominimise them, but first-hand experienceis
always moremeaningful.
Allstudents gained some helpful insights from the experienced guides and
were able to discuss strategies used to minimise the risks associated with
whitewater rafting.
Theday wasenjoyedbyall and,for all, itwas greattobeback in the outdoors.
Severalstudentsbravedthe cold to jump overboardtowards theend of the
trip, while some chose the stay-dry approach. At abalmy 7degrees this
option seemed sensible.
It wasrewarding to have the guides saythey were very impressed with our
students, commending them on their behaviour and positiveattitudes.
Term Three will see the class head out for their three-day hike and, later in
the term,the Mountain Biking trip.
AshHutt Girls’ 1st XV Successful Gala Night
The AshHutt Girls’ 1st XV played their first games of their season on
Wednesday24June,ataGala Nightheld at Alpine EnergyStadiuminTimaru,
where each of the six teamsentered playedtwo twelve-minute half games.
Coach Vaughan Ward said that the team had trained well in atwo-hour
session on the Monday night (22 June), which also incorporated the
compulsory practical component ofthe Rugby Smart Course for Coaches
and Management, signedoffbythe MidCanterburyRugbyUnion.
With all but one ofthe AshHutt players unable to make it, due to work
commitments, itwasverypleasing formanagement to be able to takeafull
squad, several of whomhad not playedbefore. These numbersalso included
five Under 15girls as observers -Mere Apaipo, Maria Hala, Lela Mangubat,
Tereise Salima,Ripena Umaga.
Game One was against the St Kevin’s College/Waitaki Girls’ High School
team at 5:15pm, after ashort warm up/team run. The first half produced
two individual and very good team tries to give AshHutt a20-0 lead at
half time.
St Kevin’s/Waitaki Girls’ came back strongly in the second half however,
scoring twotries and with theirdefensiveeffort keeping AshHutt scoreless,
forafinal scoreof20-10.
With no time to catch breath, the team then shifted fields to play Timaru
Girls’ High School at5:45pm.
The first half required astrong defensive effort by AshHutt, but, with little
possession in the first five minutes, the team scored the first two tries of
the game. Timaru Girls’ High School responded well, with two tries also.
AshHutt led at thebreak 15-10 and, with twofurtherAshHutttries in the
secondhalf, securedthe win of 25-10.
Theteam (pictured left)
showedagreat deal of
emotion afterthefinal
whistle,and wasvery
pleased with their efforts,
as were the Coaches,
Management and
supporters.
Awell-deservedstopatMcDonalds beforeleaving Timarufor home,was a
greatway to finish thenight.
Although it is naturallydisappointing,but understandable,tohavea
shortened season, the girlshaveall returnedfromlockdownreadytopick up
where they left off.Thereisaclear advantage in havingaleadership group
within the team, helping to lead the lessexperienced players very well.
Paying off also, isthe time that has been spent onthe basic skills of the
game. Management believes the team will compete well this year and, at
the time of writing, they were looking forward totheir pre-season game
against Geraldine HighSchool yesterday.
Gala Night team members were - Grace Bleach, Khalani Brightwell,
