Tik tok strikes again
The New Brighton heritage
Clock Tower damaged in
the 2010-2011 earthquakes
will finally reopen this
month according to Council
contractors. This is good news
for the community who have
waited for nearly a decade for
these repairs to be undertaken
and which reflects a positive
revitalisation of amenities on
the foreshore.
The weathered looks of the
clocktower reflects its long
and somewhat bitter family
history. The Clock Tower is a
piece of New Brighton and was
one of three gifts from Richard
Green (a retired builder) to the
citizens of Christchurch.
It was commonly believed
that Green had fallen out with
his family and that he was
hell-bent on cutting them out
of his estate by divesting himself of his
wealth and paying for the creation of
statues and clock towers. Some of Green’s
family were in poor financial states,
including a son who had been wounded
in World War I.
Green stated that the clock towers were
in memory of his father, Edmund Green
(1829-99) who was involved with the
introduction of the telegraph into New
Zealand.
There were rumours that family
members would disrupt – even bomb –
the ceremonies where foundation stones
were laid. Certainly, members of the
family wrote letters about Green to the
newspapers defaming him and accusing
Green of all sorts of debauchery.
On 14 December 1934, Irene Leaver,
daughter of E. A. M. Leaver (mayor
of New Brighton 1931-1935), laid the
foundation stone of the New Brighton
clock tower.
This repair of the clocktower will
be celebrated by the New Brighton
community. Yet like other national
memorials and statues, it hides a more
complicated past behind its new and
unblemished exterior.
